*It was a sunny afternoon right after school let out. Xiao Ming rushed out of his classroom, his schoolbag bouncing on his shoulder, pencils rattling inside his pencil box. But he didn't care about any of that—today was the day he would play "tag" with his three best friends!*
*Xiao Ming's friends were Xiao Hong, Xiao Qiang, and Xiao Fang. They'd been inseparable since kindergarten, playing at the small playground behind their school every day after class. This playground was small but perfect in Xiao Ming's eyes—a square of grass in the middle surrounded by a red rubber track.*
*"Xiao Ming, you're 'it' today!" Xiao Hong called out with a mischievous grin.*
*Why do I always have to be it? Xiao Ming thought to himself. But Xiao Qiang reminded him that he was the fastest runner, so he agreed to count down: "Ten, nine, eight... one—here I come!"*
*When Xiao Ming opened his eyes, the three friends had scattered to different corners of the playground, looking like they had planned it. Xiao Ming immediately ran toward Xiao Hong—slowest of the three—but quickly realized his mistake: if he chased her, Xiao Qiang and Xiao Fang would escape to the other end of the playground.*
*Xiao Ming stopped, scratching his head, wondering what to do.*
*Just then, their physical education teacher, Coach Wang, walked by the playground. Seeing Xiao Ming standing there confused, Coach Wang smiled and asked, "What's the matter, Xiao Ming?"*
*Xiao Ming explained his dilemma. Coach Wang crouched down to meet his eyes and said, "Do you know that the problem you're facing right now is exactly the same problem real football players face on the pitch?"*
*"But I'm just playing tag!" Xiao Ming replied, puzzled.*
*"Not tag—it's about passing, positioning, and moving," Coach Wang explained. "But the core problem you both face is the same: space."*
*Space? Xiao Ming was even more confused. Space was just the playground, right? What was there to figure out?*
*Coach Wang pointed to the playground and said, "Look, all four of you are on this playground. But every position on it is different. Some places are close to you, some are far. Some look empty, some are crowded with people. In football, whoever understands space controls the game."*

*Coach Wang saw that Xiao Ming was still a bit confused, so he decided to explain with a more visual method. He pulled out a piece of paper and drew a large square on it.*
*"Xiao Ming, look," Coach Wang pointed to the four corners of the square. "Imagine this is your playground. You're standing in the bottom-left corner, and your goal is to catch whoever's at any position. Where do you think you should stand to catch others most easily?"*
*Xiao Ming thought for a moment. "In the middle? Because from the middle, every direction is close?"*
*"Exactly right!" Coach Wang's eyes lit up. "Imagine you're standing right in the center of the playground. No matter which direction your friends run, you can catch them with the shortest distance. This is a very important concept in football—controlling the center."*
*Coach Wang drew a circle in the middle of the square, then drew lines connecting the circle to the four corners.*
*"Look," he explained. "From the center to each corner, the distance is equal. But on a real football pitch, the path to goal usually goes through the center. If your team controls the center, it's like grabbing your opponent by the throat—they must pass through your controlled area to attack. That's why many teams fight so hard for the center of the pitch."*
*Xiao Ming began to understand. He stared at the diagram Coach Wang drew, then thought of another question: "Teacher, what if my position isn't exactly in the center but slightly off?"*
*Coach Wang nodded approvingly. "Great question! If you shift away from the center, it takes longer to catch friends in some directions and shorter in others. It's like a balance scale—the position you stand determines the 'price' (time) of chasing in each direction. From the center, every direction costs the same. From a corner, the diagonal direction costs two or three times more."*
*Xiao Ming excitedly drew a square on the ground and calculated the distance to chase Xiao Hong from different positions. "If I'm at a corner, I have to run the whole side to catch Xiao Hong across from me! But if I'm in the middle, I only need to run half the diagonal! The distance is much less!"*
*"Right," Coach Wang said. "That's why midfield players have such important positions on a real football team. They stand in the 'center' of the pitch, able to help both in defense and attack. Whoever controls midfield controls the rhythm of the game."*
