In a corner of our world, long ago, there lay a magical land. No verdant mountains graced its surface, no babbling rivers crossed its sands—only endless golden waves stretching to the horizon. When the sun rose, the entire world turned brilliant orange and red. When night fell, the silhouettes of dunes stood mysteriously beautiful beneath the moonlight. This was the desert—the place where our story begins.
Many, many years later, an amazing city that would astonish the world would be born upon these sands. That city would be Dubai. But that was a long, long time away. In those ancient days, when your great-great-great-grandfather was still a child, there was only sand, wind, and starlit skies here. Now, let us climb aboard a time machine and travel back to those desert-only days, to meet a little boy named Aladdin and hear his tale.

🌞 The Birth of the Desert: From Ocean to Dunes
Aladdin's favorite thing to do was climb the tallest dune near his home at dawn and watch the sun slowly rise above the horizon. His grandfather said this desert had existed for thousands upon thousands of years—longer than anyone could remember. But grandfather also shared a secret with Aladdin: long, long ago, this place was not a desert at all, but a vast ocean.
This secret made Aladdin's eyes grow wide. The ocean? Here? An ocean full of sand? Grandfather laughed and shook his head, explaining that in those times, the water here was deeper than any lake and vaster than any river. Colorful corals dotted the seafloor, schools of fish swam in coordinated groups, and enormous whales glided gracefully through the deep blue waters.
"So how did it become a desert?" Aladdin pressed.
Grandfather gazed into the distance, his eyes growing distant. "It was a very slow change—slow enough that one generation couldn't detect it. But over millions of years, the ocean gradually dried up."
It turns out that throughout Earth's long history, climates constantly change. Sometimes a region becomes warm and humid; other times it grows hot and dry. About ten thousand years ago, Earth entered a new climate period, and this former ocean region began growing increasingly dry. Rainfall decreased, sunlight grew more intense, and the ocean's waters slowly evaporated, disappearing bit by bit into the air.
When seawater evaporated, it left behind salt and various minerals that covered the dried-up seafloor. Day after day, year after year, winds from distant rocky mountains blew in, lifting tiny grains of sand and gently scattering them across this dried land. Sand accumulated more and more, piling higher and higher, until the former seafloor gradually transformed into a rolling sea of sand.
Aladdin imagined that vanished ocean, imagined whales and corals sleeping beneath the dunes. Suddenly he felt that these sands were no ordinary sands—each grain carried ancient memories, and every dune buried a lost world.
Scientists tell us that most of the Arabian Peninsula, where Dubai lies, belongs geologically to the extension of the Arabian Plateau. This area was once part of the ancient Mediterranean Sea—called the Tethys Sea. About twenty-five million years ago, as Earth's tectonic plates shifted, the Arabian Peninsula rose from the sea, beginning its long journey of gradually becoming a desert. Weathering and erosion sculpted this land day after day, transforming rocks into pebbles and pebbles into fine sand, ultimately creating the magnificent desert landscape we see today.

💧 Scarce Rainfall: Why the Desert Is Dry
Aladdin asked grandfather: "Why does it hardly rain here?"
Grandfather pointed to the fiery sun in the sky and said: "Look, the sun works hard every day to dry the earth. But the reason rainfall is scarce here is mainly due to three factors."
The first reason is geographical location. Dubai lies near the Tropic of Cancer, close to the tropical regions of Earth. Here, a subtropical high-pressure belt acts like a giant hat, constantly hovering overhead. This high-pressure system's characteristic feature is descending air—when air sinks, it warms up, and warm air can hold more moisture, making rainfall difficult to form. Imagine a large sponge: when the sponge is pressed down, it squeezes water out; but when the sponge bounces back to its original shape, it actually absorbs moisture from its surroundings. The subtropical high-pressure belt is like that bounced-back sponge, constantly "absorbing" moisture from the air, making it difficult for clouds and rain to form.
The second reason is surrounding terrain. Dubai has no tall mountains nearby to block moist air from the ocean, nor are there mountains to lift moist air high enough to cool and condense into rain. The real issue is that moist monsoon winds from the Indian Ocean must first cross the arid regions of the Iranian Plateau and Pakistan before reaching the Arabian Peninsula. By the time this moist air好不容易 arrives at the Arabian Peninsula, it has already become very dry. It's like a child running a hundred miles, becoming extremely thirsty, and by the time they reach your door, their water bottle is completely empty.
The third reason is cold ocean currents. Although Dubai is adjacent to the Persian Gulf, the gulf's water temperature isn't particularly high, and the surrounding land is mostly dry. The ocean should provide moisture, but when seawater isn't warm enough, evaporation decreases, limiting the moisture the air can absorb. Imagine a small flame under boiling water—it produces little steam; a large flame produces more. Here, the "flame isn't large enough," so "steam" isn't abundant either.
So when moist air blows in from afar, it's either "absorbed" of its moisture by the high-pressure belt or exhausted along the way, rarely reaching this land to form rainfall. Aladdin understood why his grandfather was so happy every time he saw a drop of rain—because in the desert, every single drop of rainwater is a precious gift.
