At dawn in the seventh century, as the first rays of sunlight pierced through the morning mist over the Guanzhong Plain, a magnificent city was gradually awakening in the glow of dawn. This city was Chang'an—the largest and most prosperous metropolis on Earth at that time, a city of dreams承载着无数梦想与希望,承载着一个伟大帝国的雄心与荣光。
According to historical records, at its peak during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong (712-756 CE), Chang'an housed approximately one million residents within its walls, making it the undisputed largest city in the world. The city's urban area covered about 84 square kilometers, including both the Imperial City (Huang Cheng) and the Imperial Enclosure (Da Nei), surrounded by massive walls that stretched over 35 kilometers in circumference. Imagine the sheer magnitude of this achievement in an age when most European cities could barely support populations of ten thousand—Chang'an stood as a monument to Chinese civilization's extraordinary capabilities.
But Chang'an's significance extended far beyond commerce. It was a spiritual crossroads where Buddhism from India, Zoroastrianism from Persia, Manichaeism from Central Asia, Islam from Arabia, and Nestorian Christianity all found their place within the city walls. A monk could recite sutras in a Buddhist temple at noon, attend a Zoroastrian fire ceremony in the afternoon, and dine with Nestorian priests in the evening—all without leaving the city. This remarkable religious diversity was unprecedented in the ancient world and contributed to Chang'an's reputation as a truly cosmopolitan metropolis.
To truly understand why Chang'an became the eastern starting point of the Silk Road, we must first explore the city's unique layout. The planning of Chang'an was by no means arbitrary—it embodied profound cultural concepts and political wisdom, reflecting the ancient Chinese philosophy of "harmony between heaven and humanity."

The city's streets formed a perfect grid pattern, with main thoroughfares running east-west and north-south. The widest avenue, Zhuque Street, measured an astonishing 150 meters in width—a dimension that would impress even modern urban planners. Lined with neatly planted pagoda trees and elms, these boulevards provided shade for pedestrians seeking refuge from the summer sun.
The residential areas were divided into 108 "wards" (fang), each an independent enclosed community surrounded by walls with only two gates for residents to enter and exit. When night fell, after three hundred drumbeats echoed through the city, the ward gates would close one by one, implementing a strict curfew system. This ward management system not only facilitated public security but also shaped a distinctive urban lifestyle—within the wards was relatively quiet residential space, while outside lay the bustling commercial markets.
When it came to commercial districts, the most famous were undoubtedly the East Market (Dong Shi) and West Market (Xi Shi). The East Market, located southeast of the Imperial City, primarily served the aristocracy, selling luxury goods and high-end commodities. The West Market, situated southwest of the Imperial City, was the shopping paradise for commoners and the most concentrated area for foreign merchants. Historical records suggest that over twenty thousand foreign merchants were permanently stationed in the West Market. Every day at noon, following three drumbeats, both markets would open simultaneously, instantly filling with deafening noise and bustling crowds. Merchants, customers, monks, and tourists from all directions jostled against each other, wandering through dazzling arrays of goods.
In telling the story of Chang'an and the Silk Road, we cannot avoid mentioning a name—Zhang Qian. This Han Dynasty diplomat, revered by later generations as "the first person to lead Chinese civilization toward the world," opened the door between the Central Plains and the Western Regions through his thirteen-year pioneering journey, laying the historical foundation for Chang'an's role as the Silk Road's starting point.
The story dates back to the second century BCE. Although the Han Dynasty had been established, a powerful nomadic nation—the Xiongnu—lurked on the northern grasslands. They frequently raided the southern territories, bringing endless suffering to border people. Emperor Gaozu Liu Bang was once besieged by the Xiongnu at Baideng Mountain for seven days and nights, nearly losing his life. Subsequently, the Western Han court adopted a "heqin" (marriage alliance) policy, sending Han princesses to marry Xiongnu chieftains in exchange for border peace. But this stopgap measure was by no means a permanent solution.
In 141 BCE, a ambitious young man ascended the throne in Chang'an—Emperor Wu Liu Che. This ruler of great talent and bold vision was unwilling to accept the "marriage diplomacy" left by his ancestors, determining to fundamentally solve the Xiongnu threat. It was in this historical context that Zhang Qian made his entrance.
In 139 BCE, Zhang Qian set out from Chang'an with over a hundred companions, embarking on a long journey to the Western Regions. His mission seemed simple—to travel to the Yuezhi kingdom in the Western Regions and persuade them to form an alliance with Han China to jointly attack the Xiongnu. But this "simple" path proved extraordinarily arduous.
Zhang Qian's party set out from Longxi Commandery but quickly entered the Hexi Corridor, which was under Xiongnu control. When they reached the Qiang ethnic area, they were unfortunately captured by Xiongnu cavalry. Rather than killing them, the Xiongnu Chanyu detained Zhang Qian on the grasslands for ten long years. During this time, Zhang Qian was forced to marry a Xiongnu wife and even had children, yet he nev
