Two Generations of Love, One Heart
---
When the sunset painted the sky in warm shades of orange, the Li family kitchen was already filled with the aroma of home-cooked meals. Sixty-seven-year-old Wang Xiulan stood at the stove, skillfully stir-frying vegetables, beads of perspiration glistening on her forehead. Her son Lin Zhiyuan's family of three lived in the next building, but they came over for dinner almost every evening—a habit Wang Xiulan had maintained for over twenty years, and the moment she looked forward to most each day.
"Ma, let me take the plates," Lin Zhiyuan said as he walked from the living room into the kitchen, taking the plates from his mother's hands. "You made so much again today?"
"Hardly anything, hardly anything. Diandian loves spareribs, so I went to the morning market specially to buy fresh ones." Wang Xiulan said with a beaming smile, the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes filled with satisfaction. "And the steamed egg with shrimp—that Diandian said she liked yesterday, so I made it again today."
Six-year-old Diandian ran from the living room into the kitchen, standing on tiptoes trying to reach the plates on the stove: "Grandma grandma, I want shrimp!"
"Good good good, little glutton. Go wash your hands first, and grandma will peel the shrimp for you." Wang Xiulan affectionately patted her granddaughter's head and pinched her chubby little cheek.
Lin Zhiyuan's wife Chen Yutong walked out from the bedroom, holding Diandian's little water bottle: "Ma, Diandian already drank a bottle of yogurt just now. Don't give her more food before dinner, and the shrimp egg is also greasy—"
"Oh dear, the child is still growing, how can we let her go hungry?" Wang Xiulan's smile froze for a moment, then quickly returned to its kind appearance. "My cooking isn't greasy at all, it's all steamed."
At the dinner table, Lin Zhiyuan watched this scene unfold and sighed softly. This kind of scene played out almost every day—his mother expressing her love for her granddaughter in the ways of her generation, while his wife followed modern concepts from parenting books and the internet. Both generations wanted the best for the child, yet they quietly competed over countless details.
This is a microcosm of countless families in contemporary China. In our society, grandparents participating in childcare has become a widespread phenomenon. According to statistics, over half of preschool-aged children in China are primarily cared for by grandparents; while in the United States, Europe, and other Western countries, this proportion is relatively lower but steadily increasing. Intergenerational parenting is no longer a special choice for individual families, but a family phenomenon spanning cultures and遍布全球。
The Warmth of Two Generations at the Table
Let us return to the Li family's dinner table. Wang Xiulan sat beside Diandian, and before her was an exquisite little dish neatly arranged with hand-peeled shrimp. She picked up a shrimp with her chopsticks, gently blew on it to check it wasn't hot, then carefully delivered it to Diandian's mouth.
"Be a good girl, Diandian, open wide, grandma will feed you." The elderly woman's voice was gentle as if coaxing a little swallow.
Diandian opened her little mouth, eating with great relish, and,一边吃一边含糊不清地说:"奶奶做的虾虾最好吃了!" 一边含糊不清地说:“奶奶做的虾虾最好吃了!”Diandian opened her little mouth, eating with great relish, mumbling as she ate: "Grandma's shrimp is the most delicious!"
Chen Yutong watched this scene, her brow slightly furrowing: "Ma, I've told you many times, don't feed her. Diandian is six already, she should learn to eat by herself. And feeding her like this isn't good for developing her independent eating habits."
Wang Xiulan's hand paused, and a barely noticeable grievance flashed across her face: "I fed your Zhiyuan when he was young, and didn't he grow up tall and strong? We didn't have all these fancy rules back then, and children grew up just fine, didn't they?"
Lin Zhiyuan quickly tried to smooth things over: "Come on, let's all eat, the food is getting cold." He put a piece of sparerib into Diandian's bowl: "Diandian, can you eat the sparerib by yourself?"
Diandian glanced at her father, then at her grandma, her little eyes spinning: "I want grandma to feed me! Grandma's feeding tastes better!"
The atmosphere at the table became somewhat delicate for a moment. Chen Yutong put down her chopsticks, took a deep breath, and tried to keep her tone
"Ma, I know you love Diandian, but overprotection will make her develop dependent psychology. A six-year-old should learn to eat by herself—it's a necessary skill development in the growth process," Chen Yutong explained patiently.
Wang Xiulan opened her mouth, wanting to retort, but seeing her daughter-in-law's earnest expression, she swallowed her words back. Wang Xiulan opened her mouth, wanting to argue, but seeing her daughter-in-law's serious expression, she swallowed her words. She lowered her head and focused on peeling shrimp for Diandian, but her heart was filled with a sour ache. Decades ago, she had raised three children all by herself. Back then, material resources were scarce, and she tried every way possible to make food for her children—even if she herself went hungry, she ensured her children were well-fed and warmly dressed. Now that conditions had improved, she wanted to bring the best to her granddaughter, yet she was always told she "didn't understand science" and had "outdated ideas."
The meal continued in relative silence. Diandian seemed to sense the subtle emotions of the adults, obediently eating by herself, occasionally glancing at grandma, then at mommy, perhaps in her little head wondering: why is mommy unhappy when grandma feeds me? Why does eating by myself make grandma upset?
After the meal, while Wang Xiulan was clearing the dishes, Chen Yutong took Diandian to the living room to watch cartoons. This was Diandian's daily "TV time"—Chen Yutong strictly controlled it, allowing only thirty minutes per day, so she was always very precise about the timing.
"Grandma, come quick! The cartoon is starting!"
