Chapter 1: What is a Material? – The Evolution from Stones to Chips
Have you ever wondered why stones can be carved but sand cannot? Why is a phone screen hard enough to resist scratches while modeling clay can be shaped into anything? It all comes down to materials—everything around us made of matter. But a material is not just the substance itself; it is matter arranged in a specific structure. Like using the same size Lego bricks, you can build a car or a castle—different structures, different functions. Scientifically, we say: Structure Determines Properties. This is the cornerstone of materials science and the mystery we will explore in this chapter.
The definition of a material seems simple: it is matter used to make useful objects. But the key is that the same matter, by changing its internal structure, can become materials with completely different properties. Take clay and ceramic, for example. Both come from earth and are mainly silicates. But clay is a loose aggregation of particles, while ceramic, after high-temperature firing, has particles fused into a dense crystalline structure. As a result, ceramic becomes hard, heat-resistant, and non-porous, whereas clay is soft, malleable, and water-absorbent. The core of this transformation is the change in structure.
The history of human use and creation of materials is a story of civilization evolution. We can clearly divide it into several key eras, each defined by one or a few signature materials whose discovery and processing technologies radically transformed ways of life.
Stone Age: Approximately 3 million years ago to 6000 BCE. The earliest material used by humans was stone, such as flint and granite. Through knapping, sharp edges were made for cutting and hunting. Properties of stone: high hardness, brittle, difficult to shape. Structurally, natural stone is an aggregate of mineral crystals, either amorphous or coarse-grained, with disordered atomic arrangement, making it hard but prone to fracture along grain boundaries.
Bronze Age: Approximately 3300 to 1200 BCE. Humans discovered bronze, an alloy of copper with tin or arsenic. Bronze has higher hardness and strength than pure copper, and a lower melting point, making it easy to cast into complex shapes. This is due to alloying forming a uniform solid solution or intermetallic compound structure, with more ordered atomic arrangement that impedes dislocation motion, thereby strengthening the material. The Bronze Age saw the first tools, weapons, and artworks.
Iron Age: Approximately 1200 BCE to 600 CE. The widespread use of iron, especially the invention of steel (an iron-carbon alloy). Iron is harder and more abundant than bronze, but early smelting produced wrought iron, which is relatively soft. By controlling carbon content and heat treatment, such as quenching to form martensite, the hardness of steel increased dramatically. The Iron Age brought stronger agricultural tools, weapons, and architectural structures, driving changes in farming and warfare.
Silicon Age: Mid-20th century to present. The semiconductor material based on silicon, especially the purification and processing of monocrystalline silicon, gave rise to integrated circuits and microprocessors. Silicon's diamond cubic crystal structure and band structure allow precise control of electrical conductivity through doping, enabling the switching function of transistors. This led to the information revolution, making computers, smartphones, and the internet central to life. The essence of the Silicon Age is the leap from macroscopic structural control to nanoscale structural control.
From stones to chips, the evolution of human material history is not just an increase in material types but a deepening of our ability to control material structure: from using natural shapes, to alloying mixtures, to heat treatment altering phase structures, and finally to atomic-scale precision manufacturing. Each leap is built on understanding that "structure determines properties."
Let's witness the magic of "structure determines properties" through two everyday examples.
(Ceramic)
Case 1: Clay vs. Ceramic
You may have played with clay—it's soft, malleable, and easier to shape when wet, but becomes hard when dried or baked, yet still brittle. Ceramic bowls and tiles, however, are very hard, wear-resistant, and heat-resistant; they may not break when dropped (depending on type). Their main components are similar, both silicate minerals. Why such different properties?
The key is the sintering process. Clay particles (plate-like clay minerals) are micron-scale sheets, loosely bound by van der Waals forces, with a porous structure and amorphous regions, making them soft, absorbent, and low-strength. When heated to high temperatures (above ~1000°C), diffusion occurs between particles, forming new chemical bonds, fusing particles, reducing pores, and finally forming a dense crystalline structure (such as mullite or quartz). Atoms change from disordered to ordered periodic arrangement, with covalent and ionic bonds dominating, thus greatly increasing hardness, strength, and heat resistance.
We can use a simple analogy: clay is like a stack of wet paper, easy to separate; ceramic is like fired bricks, fused into one.
(Synthetic Fiber)
Case 2: Natural Fiber vs. Synthetic Fiber
Cotton and wool are natural fibers—comfortable, breathable, but moderate in strength, prone to wrinkling and shrinking. Nylon and polyester are synthetic fibers—high strength, wear-resistant, quick-drying, wrinkle-resistant. Both are polymers, but their molecular structures differ.
