The Prelude: Origins and Evolution of the Three-Point Line
October 12, 1979, New Orleans Arena. The season opener between the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics was in full swing, with the score tight and both teams trading baskets. With 6:21 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Boston Celtics inbounded the ball from the sideline—a routine play that happens hundreds of times each season. Point guard Chris Ford passed to Rick Robey at the right 45-degree angle, who took one dribble, then launched the ball from approximately 23 feet, 9 inches away. The ball traced a beautiful arc and swished through the net cleanly. The referee blew his whistle simultaneously—shot good, plus one free throw.
This was the first three-pointer in NBA history.
The Genesis: Birth of an Idea
To understand why the three-point line was introduced to the NBA in 1979, we need to rewind a few years to an era when the basketball world was still completely dominated by two-point shots.
In 1975, the American Basketball Association (ABA)—the NBA's primary competitor—decided to introduce the three-point line after gaining approval from league teams. ABA President Mike Storen later recalled that the idea originated from experiments in lower-tier leagues and college basketball. He remembered seeing a research report from a small Colorado college suggesting that adding a bonus shot could change the pace of play and make games more entertaining.
The ABA's decision-makers believed the three-pointer could be a crucial weapon in their differentiation strategy against the NBA. While the ABA had seen some box office success, it was always overshadowed by the NBA. By introducing "innovative rules" like the three-pointer, the ABA hoped to attract fans who wanted to see more entertaining basketball.
In 1975, the ABA tested the three-point shot during its All-Star Weekend, but it was merely an exhibition item, not counting toward official games. In 1976, the ABA officially incorporated the three-pointer into regular season rules. That same year, New Jersey Nets player John Long became the first player to make a three-pointer in an official game—though this historical honor is somewhat disputed, as the statistical recording systems at the time were imperfect.
In 1976, the ABA and NBA merged. This merger was profound for the NBA—not only did it eliminate the NBA's biggest competitor, but it also "inherited" the three-point rule that originally belonged to the ABA. However, in the first several years following the merger, NBA management remained uncertain about whether to retain the three-point rule.
NBA Commissioner Julius Ervin (later renamed Larry Brown) ultimately decided to keep the three-pointer, treating it as an experimental rule that required more long-term observation and evaluation within the league. Historical records suggest Ervin himself had a complex attitude toward the three-point shot—on one hand, he recognized the business logic behind the ABA's introduction of the rule; on the other, he worried that this rule could fundamentally change the NBA's tactical system.
The 1979-80 season saw the three-pointer officially become a permanent NBA rule—though many at the time believed it was merely a "temporary decision" that could be revoked at any moment.
Initial Skepticism and Resistance
The three-point shot faced skepticism from virtually the start in the NBA. This skepticism came not only from conservative team management but also from players who had grown up in the two-point era.
Imagine, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, what kind of basketball education an NBA player had received from childhood? The answer was simple: interior dominance was everything. The closer to the basket, the higher the scoring efficiency—this was the unshakeable basketball truth of that era. Players who grew up in such an environment had virtually all their shooting training concentrated in mid-range and near-basket areas. In their eyes, the three-point line was nothing more than a strange, unreachable existence.
Legendary Detroit Pistons center Bob Lanier once made a statement that was widely agreed with at the time: "I'd rather miss from three feet away than make it from 30 feet." This quote perfectly summarized that era's players' attitude toward the three-pointer—it wasn't just a tactical choice, but an almost deeply ingrained basketball philosophy.
Team playbooks also reflected this attitude. In the early 1980s, most teams' offensive strategies were built almost entirely around the interior game. The center was the core of the offense; guards were tasked with driving and dishing to create easy scoring opportunities for the post. The three-point shot's position in the tactical system was nearly negligible—it was more of a last resort, a "last resort" that players would reluctantly heave toward the arc only when the shot clock was about to expire and neither the post nor open mid-range shots were available.
The 1980 NBA Finals provides an excellent example. In that seven-game classic between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics, the two teams combined attempted only 31 three-pointers—averaging less than 4.5 attempts per game. Of those 31 attempts, only 7 went in, a mere 22.6% success rate. Keep in mind that the 1980 three-point line was approximately 23 feet, 9 inches (7.24 meters) from the basket—farther than at any later period.
This low three-point volume and accuracy further "confirmed" the era's suspicions about the three-pointer: it was simply an inefficient shooting choice.
The Iceman's Burden: George Gervin's Stubbornness
If we need a representative case of early NBA players' resistance to the three-pointer, George Gervin's story is absolutely indispensable. This guard nicknamed "The Iceman" was one of the most exciting scorers in the post-merger ABA and NBA. His finger roll was unmatched, and his scoring ability was second to none in the entire league.
