In this opening chapter, we begin with an imaginative comparison: what if a city were like a human body? The roads would be like blood vessels, the flowing cars and pedestrians would be blood cells carrying people to where they need to go, and the tall buildings would be like muscles and bones supporting everything. But have you ever wondered how a city with over thirty million people manages to get everyone where they need to be, on time, every single day? Join us on this journey of discovery as we explore the secrets of Tokyo, one of the most remarkable cities in the world.
Tokyo's Geographic Location in Japan
To understand Tokyo, we first need to figure out where it is. Look at a map of East Asia, and you will see a beautiful island nation shaped somewhat like a long serpent—that is Japan. Japan consists of four main islands and countless smaller ones, stretching about 3,000 kilometers from north to south, like a sleeping dragon lying along the western coast of the Pacific Ocean. Japan's capital city is Tokyo, but today we will explore not just the city of Tokyo itself, but the entire Tokyo metropolitan area—a super city region even larger than many countries.
Japan's geographic location is quite special. It sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, surrounded by ocean on all sides, with varied climates. From Tokyo, you can take a Shinkansen (bullet train) north to the icy Hokkaido or south to the warm Kyushu island. Japan's terrain is mainly mountainous, with limited plain areas, and Tokyo sits on a small plain in eastern Honshu—the Kanto Plain. Although this plain is not large, it supports one-third of Japan's population and is one of the most densely populated plain areas in the world.
Defining the Tokyo Metropolitan Area
When we talk about "Tokyo," many people might think it's just the name of a single city. But actually, the word "Tokyo" can refer to several different levels of meaning, like nested Russian dolls. Understanding these different levels is essential for us to comprehend Tokyo's commuter system.
The first level is Tokyo Metropolis, which is a "Metropolis" in Japan's administrative divisions, similar to a municipality directly governed by the central government in China. Tokyo Metropolis covers an area of approximately 2,194 square kilometers, about one-seventh the size of Beijing. Within this area, there are 23 special wards (similar to the city center), 26 cities, 5 towns, and 8 villages. But this is the narrowest definition of "Tokyo."
The second level is the Capital Region, or Tokyo Metropolitan Area. This concept includes Tokyo Metropolis along with the surrounding Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba prefectures, sometimes extending into parts of Ibaraki and Yamanashi prefectures. The total area of the Capital Region is approximately 13,400 square kilometers, with over 37 million people living within it. This is like combining all of Beijing and Tianjin, plus parts of Hebei Province, into one huge metropolitan area.
The third level is the Greater Tokyo Area, an even broader concept that includes all areas within a 100-kilometer radius of Tokyo Station. Within this area, not only are the aforementioned administrative divisions included, but also parts of Shizuoka Prefecture and some remote islands of Tokyo. The population in this area approaches 40 million, making it one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world.
Population Scale and Urban Density
When we talk about Tokyo's population, it is a staggering number. Let's make some comparisons to help you better understand what this number means.
As of 2023, the population of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area is approximately 37 million. What does this number mean? Let's compare it with the total population of some countries. Canada's total population is about 38 million, Iraq about 40 million, Argentina about 45 million. This means the Tokyo Metropolitan Area's population is comparable to the entire population of Canada, yet the land area it occupies is only one-thousandth of Canada's!
If we consider the Tokyo Metropolitan Area as a country, it would rank around 35th in the world population, between Iraq and Poland. The population density of this "city-nation" is equally astonishing, with an average of over 2,700 people per square kilometer. In comparison, Beijing has only about 1,300 people per square kilometer. This means Tokyo is twice as densely populated as Beijing.
In the 23 special wards of Tokyo—the core urban area—the population density is even more staggering. Chiyoda Ward has an average population density exceeding 20,000 people per square kilometer, equivalent to over 2,000 people standing on a standard football field! This ultra-high population density places extremely high demands on the city's transportation system.
City as an Organism: Tokyo's Urban Metaphor
Now that we know how big Tokyo is and how many people live there, let's understand this city in a more interesting way. Imagine that Tokyo is a giant living organism, and we are little scientists observing this "city creature."
In this city organism, the JR Yamanote Line is like a major artery, circling around the core area of Tokyo and transporting millions of passengers every day. The Yamanote Line has 30 stations and carries over 4 million passengers daily. This circular line is 34.5 kilometers long, and one full circuit takes about 60 minutes. If stretched out straight, it would be equivalent to connecting 300 standard football fields together.
The Tokyo Metro and Toei Metro lines are like the city's veins and capillaries, extending into every corner of the city and transporting passengers to places closest to their destinations. Currently, Tokyo's subway system has a total length of approximately 300 kilometers with over 200 stations. These subway lines are as dense as a spider's web, making it possible to conveniently connect any two locations via subway.
Buses are like the microcirculation system of this organism, reaching into the small streets and alleys that subways and trains cannot access, providing transportation services
