The Methodology and Theoretical Framework of African Civilizational History
This epistemological crisis in African historical studies represents one of the most significant intellectual challenges in contemporary historiography. For too long, the continent with the longest human evolutionary history and millennia of civilizational development was systematically portrayed as a land "without history" in mainstream world historical narratives. The colonial construction of "Africa without history" in the 19th century not only served the ideological needs of colonial domination but profoundly shaped Western scholarly understanding of the continent. Yet, since the mid-20th century, a fundamental paradigm shift has been reshaping the methodological foundations of how we understand African civilizational history.
The concept of paradigm, systematically articulated by philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn in his seminal work *The Structure of Scientific Revolutions*, refers to the fundamental assumptions, theoretical frameworks, and methodological principles shared by a disciplinary community. When normal research within an existing paradigm fails to effectively address accumulated anomalies, the emergence of crisis signals the possibility of paradigm shift. In African historical studies, this epistemological crisis became evident as early as the end of the colonial era, and its subsequent trajectory fully embodies the characteristics of paradigmatic revolution described by Kuhn.
This chapter aims to provide a solid scholarly foundation for the subsequent chapters of this book. We will systematically examine the paradigm shifts in African civilizational history research, deeply analyze how various theoretical frameworks have differently influenced the writing of African history, detail the integrated application of multidisciplinary methods in African archaeology and historical research, and based on this foundation, define the operationalized meanings of the core concepts used in this book. This work is not merely a critical review of existing research but aims to establish an analytical framework that can fully reveal the achievements of African civilizations and their significance to world history.
The Colonial-Era Historiography and Racist Narratives
Understanding the contemporary paradigm shift in African civilizational studies requires first deeply analyzing the ideological foundations of colonial-era historical writing. Since the mid-19th century when European powers began systematically partitioning the African continent, a historical narrative rooted in racist ideology gradually dominated understanding of Africa. The core proposition of this narrative—that Africa is a static continent lacking history and civilization—appeared on the surface to be an objective description of Africa's past, but in essence was a carefully constructed ideological product serving colonial domination.
The construction of this "myth" can be analyzed at three levels. The first level is epistemological distortion: European colonizers and their intellectuals systematically ignored or denigrated African indigenous traditions of historical documentation, including oral history, court chronicles, commemorative inscriptions, court poetry, and mythological narratives. When Portuguese scholars arrived in West Africa in the 15th century, they recorded the rich libraries and manuscript collections in cities such as Timbuktu, containing Islamic scholarship, legal documents, historical records, and scientific knowledge dating back to the 13th century and earlier. However, colonial-era scholars often attributed the existence of these documents to external influences—primarily Arab-Islamic civilization—rather than African indigenous knowledge production.
The second level involves methodological arbitrariness. Colonial-era historians tended to use the developmental trajectory of European civilization as the sole standard for judging all human societies. Within this framework of linear progressive historiography, African societies were judged to be in a state of "barbarism" or "savagery" because they had not developed European-style cities, writing systems, centralized states, or industrial technologies. This comparative approach ignored the possibility that different civilizations might develop along different paths, and failed to recognize the unique achievements African societies created under their own historical conditions. For example, the Great Zimbabwe stone structures—an archaeological site covering over 700 hectares with exquisite stone architecture and complex urban layout—were "rediscovered" by European archaeologists in the 1920s, yet their builders' identity was deliberately denied, with official explanations attributing them to "foreign peoples from the north," not corrected as the masterpiece of indigenous African civilization until the 1960s.
The third level is the political functional need. Constructing the myth of "Africa without history" had clear political functions: it provided ideological justification for colonial domination and argued the necessity of the European colonial "civilizing mission." In this discursive system, Africans were portrayed as passive objects needing to be led into history by "advanced peoples," rather than as active subjects creating their own history. This narrative continues to influence popular culture and perceptions of Africa to this day, as French historian Pierre Nora noted, the political function of memory often determines how history is written.
Critical analysis of colonial-era historical writing requires us to simultaneously examine the production process and inherent limitations of the colonial archives themselves. Colonial archives—including colonial government administrative records, missionary reports, explorers' travelogues, military campaign records, legal documents, and other materials—constitute the primary source materials for studying African history during the colonial period today. However, these archives are not neutral historical records but products of specific power relations, carrying profound biases and systematic omissions.
