What Does the “Cold” in Cold War Mean?
Have you ever had a disagreement with a classmate? You two might get along so well usually, but argue over a tiny thing, and start a “cold war” of your own: you ignore me, I ignore you, even when you need to borrow an eraser, you have to walk halfway around the classroom to ask someone else. This state of “not fighting directly, but opposing each other in every way” is exactly the core logic of the Cold War.
Let's expand the “small class conflict” analogy first: imagine two completely opposing groups suddenly appear in your class, let's call them the “Blue Team” and the “Green Team”. The Blue Team insists that all homework must be written with blue pens, and only hopscotch is allowed during break time, and all classmates must follow this rule; the Green Team argues that homework should be written with green pens, and throwing sandbags is the best game for break time. Both groups think they are right, and want all classmates to listen to them, but neither dares to really start a fight: because last time two naughty kids fought over an eraser in class, broke the podium, and both were punished to stand for a week, so everyone is afraid of being punished again.
So the two groups start a “cold war”: the Blue Team writes “the Green Team's rules are wrong, throwing sandbags will stain clothes” on the blackboard, and the Green Team writes “the Blue Team's rules are wrong, hopscotch will scrape knees” in response; the Blue Team gives stickers and new erasers to classmates who like hopscotch, to pull them into their group; the Green Team gives marbles and snacks to classmates who like throwing sandbags, to pull them into their group; the two groups also make rules that their members cannot play with the other group, cannot borrow stationery from each other, and cannot do duty together. This state of no direct physical fighting, but full confrontation in rules, public opinion, allies, and daily interactions is the most typical feature of the Cold War.
If we turn back the clock to 1945, you will find that the real world pattern is almost exactly the same as this class story: only the “Blue Team” is replaced by the capitalist camp led by the United States, the “Green Team” is replaced by the socialist camp led by the Soviet Union, all classmates are replaced by all countries in the world, and the previously established “no fighting” rule is the Yalta System established after World War II.
To understand the Cold War, we first need to know where its basic rules came from: the Yalta System established after World War II.
Before 1945, the whole world was like a class that was disturbed by two naughty bullies: Germany and Japan, who started to rob other students' stationery, beat other classmates from 1931, and even wanted to turn the whole class into their own territory. They first attacked classmates like Spain, Austria and Poland, then reached the doors of France and the UK, and finally even the United States and the Soviet Union, who were at the other end of the class, were attacked. At this time, most of the classmates in the class finally united to form the “Anti-Fascist Alliance” and beat the two bullies together. This fight lasted for 6 years, the longest and fiercest fight in the history of the world, which is what we often call World War II (1939-1945).
When the fight was over, the two bullies were knocked down: Germany surrendered in May 1945, and Japan surrendered in August 1945, but all the classmates were also tired of fighting: the Soviet Union lost 27 million people, which means 3 out of every 10 Soviet children lost their families forever; the United States lost 400,000 people, China lost 18 million people, and more than 70 million people died worldwide in total, which means many children in every country could never see their parents again.
At this time, the three tallest classmates in the class — the United States, the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom — decided to write a few dead rules on the whiteboard at the back of the classroom, so that no such fierce fight would ever happen again. This meeting was held in the small town of Yalta in the Soviet Union, so it was called the “Yalta Conference”, and the rules set were called the “Yalta System”.
The core rules of the Yalta System, in words that children can understand, are these 3: 1. Rule for punishing bullies: Germany will be divided into two parts, the east part will be managed by the Soviet Union, and the west part will be managed by the US, UK and France, and it is not allowed to make trouble again; Japan will be managed by the United States, and it is not allowed to attack other countries again. 2. Rule for arranging seats: Classmates who had their seats taken by Germany and Japan can change to the seats they want, for example, Poland's seat will be moved a little to the west to compensate for the land taken by Germany; Korea will be temporarily divided into north and south parts, the north will be managed by the Soviet Union, the south will be managed by the United States, and after 30 years, Korean children can choose which side to sit on their own. 3. Rule for establishing a class committee: A “United Nations” will be established, which is the class committee. All classmates can go to the committee to discuss when they have conflicts, and fighting is not allowed without permission.
Doesn't this rule sound perfect? But the problem is: the three classmates who set the rules have completely opposite opinions themselves. The United States thinks that each classmate should manage their own affairs, play whatever they want, and play with whoever they want; the Soviet Union thinks that the strongest classmates should manage all classmates, everyone should play the same games and use the same stationery, which is fair. The two groups were allies when they were fighting the bullies, but now that the bullies are down, it's time to divide seats and set class rules, and the contradiction immediately emerged.
So what exactly is the Cold War? What's the difference between it and a “Hot War”?
In professional terms, the “Cold War” is defined as: from 1947 to 1991, a period of continuous confrontation between the capitali
