In the early morning, when the first ray of sunlight penetrates through the curtain and gently touches your cheek, have you ever wondered: is it natural for the sun to rise every day? When you put on your thick down jacket and walk through the snow to school, have you ever thought about why summer turns into winter? When your little dog chases its own tail in circles, have you noticed that after one complete circle, it returns to exactly where it started?
These questions may seem simple, but they contain the deepest secrets of the universe. Long, long ago, around 3000 BCE in China, there was a wise sage named Fu Xi who sat at the confluence of the Yellow River and the Luo River, quietly watching the turbulent waters. He noticed a peculiar dragon horse emerging from the river, carrying a mysterious pattern on its back; at the same time, a sacred turtle crawled out of the Luo River, its shell also covered with strange symbols. Fu Xi was deeply fascinated by these phenomena, and he observed nature day after day, contemplating the patterns of all things in heaven and earth.
One day, as Fu Xi looked up at the sun in the sky and down at the mountains and rivers on the earth, he suddenly realized an important truth: all things in the world are constantly changing. The sun rises and sets, the moon waxes and wanes, the four seasons alternate, all things grow, age, perish, and then are reborn. Nothing remains unchanged forever, and no future is completely unpredictable. All changes follow certain patterns.
Fu Xi recorded his discoveries and created eight basic symbols, which were called "Bagua" (the Eight Trigrams). In Chinese, "ba" means the number eight, while "gua" means "a symbol representing certain information," much like the traffic signs we use today—a red octagon tells us to "stop," while a blue circle tells us we can proceed. The eight symbols Fu Xi created each represent a basic natural force or phenomenon, and when combined together, they form an ancient book of wisdom without words, recording the cosmic principles of operation.
To help children better understand this great invention, let's start with the simplest things. Have you ever played with magnets?
Fu Xi applied the same principle when creating the Bagua. He used only the simplest thing—a complete twig or bamboo stick, which became the "Yang Yao," represented by a solid horizontal line. Then he created another symbol—a bamboo stick broken in the middle, which became the "Yin Yao," represented by a broken horizontal line. Just like the north and south poles of a magnet, the Yang Yao and Yin Yao are the two most fundamental elements of the Bagua, which Fu Xi called "Two Yi" (Two Principles).
Now, let's do a small experiment. Take two pieces of paper, one with a Yang Yao (solid line) and the other with a Yin Yao (broken line). First, if we stack these two papers together, how many different combinations can we create? That's right—when Yang and Yin are stacked together, we have two possibilities: Yang on top or Yin on top. Scientists call this phenomenon "two-line stacking."
Next, let's add another paper, making three papers stacked together. Now think: how many different arrangements can we have with three papers? Each paper can be either Yang or Yin, so the combinations are: Yang-Yang-Yang, Yang-Yang-Yin, Yang-Yin-Yang, Yang-Yin-Yin, Yin-Yang-Yang, Yin-Yang-Yin, Yin-Yin-Yang, Yin-Yin-Yin. Count them, and we get exactly eight combinations! This is how Fu Xi created the Bagua—each trigram consists of three Yao, and there are exactly eight different combinations.
Fu Xi gave each of the eight trigrams its own name, and each name represents a natural phenomenon or force. Let me introduce them to you one by one:
Qian Trigram consists of three Yang Yao, all solid horizontal lines. Qian represents the sky, the sun, and the father. In nature, Qian symbolizes strength, power, and positive upward force. Just like your father, who protects the whole family, being strong and powerful.
Kun Trigram consists of three Yin Yao, all broken horizontal lines. Kun represents the earth, the moon, and the mother. The earth supports all things, being gentle and inclusive, just like your mother, giving us warmth and care.
Zhen Trigram has a Yang Yao at the bottom with two Yin Yao above, resembling the feeling of thunder's vibration. Zhen represents thunder and the awakening force of all things in spring. Imagine: after winter passes, when the first spring thunder sounds, aren't the sleeping grass and flowers awakened?
Xun Trigram has a Yin Yao at the bottom with two Yang Yao above, resembling the feeling of wind passing by. Xun represents wind and the gentle but persistent force. Wind is invisible and intangible, but it can move leaves, fly kites, and even propel sailboats forward.
Kan Trigram has Yin Yao on top and bottom with a Yang Yao in the middle, resembling a puddle or a well. Kan represents water and also symbolizes danger and difficulty. Water is the source of life, but it can also cause floods and bring danger. Let me tell you a little secret: in the Yijing, the Kan trigram reminds us to be careful and cautious, just like when crossing an unfamiliar stream, we should first observe how deep the water is and how fast it flows.
Li Trigram has Yang Yao on top and bottom with a Yin Yao in the middle, resembling the flickering shape of fire. Li represents fire and symbolizes light and beauty. Fire can illuminate darkness, ward off cold, and let us see more clearly. But playing with fire is also dangerous, so the Li trigram also reminds us to use our energy and enthusiasm carefully.
Gen Trigram has a Yang Yao on top with two Yin Yao below, resembling the shape of mountains. Gen represents mountains and symbolizes s
