Introduction: The Call of the Starry Seas: The Global Historical Significance of the Age of Exploration
If you have ever looked up at the starry sky at night and wondered when humans truly began to leave their footprints all over the globe, the answer lies in the adventure that spanned three oceans 500 years ago — the transformation we call the Age of Exploration today not only rewrote the course of human civilization, but also planted the seeds of all the patterns of the modern world. To understand the significance of this transformation, we first need to clarify its spatiotemporal boundaries: the academic community usually takes 1415, when Portugal occupied Ceuta in North Africa and opened the prelude to the overseas colonial expansion of European countries, as the starting point, and the end of the 17th century, when Britain established its sea power hegemony through the Bill of Rights and basically completed the monopoly of global sea routes, as the end point, lasting about four hundred years. But the Age of Exploration is by no means a simple narrative of "Europeans discovering the New World by sailing", it is the first process in human history that systematically connected the civilizations of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas through the ocean, and it is the real starting point of globalization.
Before 1415, the intensity and scope of cross-regional civilization exchanges among humans were always limited by the limits of land transportation: the Silk Road connecting China and Rome was more than 7,000 kilometers long, and goods such as silk and spices had to be transferred by more than 10 middlemen such as Sogdian, Persian and Arab, and the price when they arrived in Rome was more than 50 times that of the place of origin, and the circulation volume was very low — according to the estimation of economic historian Angus Maddison, the total number of cross-continental trade goods in the world before 1500 was less than 50, and the annual trade volume was less than 100 million pounds. After the opening of the Age of Exploration, the sea route compressed the land distance between Europe and Asia by 80%: in the middle of the 16th century, Spain opened the Manila galleon route, directly connecting Fujian, China and Acapulco, Mexico. The price of Chinese raw silk arriving in Mexico was only 1/5 of that transported to Europe by land. The annual trade volume of this route alone reached 20 million pesos, equivalent to 1/4 of the annual fiscal revenue of the Ming Dynasty at that time. By 1600, the number of cross-regional trade goods in the world had exceeded 200, and the annual trade volume had exceeded 1 billion pounds, which was 10 times that of 1500, and the intensity and scope of civilization exchanges had undergone a qualitative leap.
This leap is first reflected in the depth and breadth of civilization exchanges. Before the Age of Exploration, civilizations on different continents were almost in a state of "parallel development": the Maya and Inca civilizations in the Americas did not know the existence of Eurasia, and the residents of Eurasia did not know the existence of the Americas. The spread of species, technologies and cultures was completely restricted by natural geographical barriers. The Age of Exploration broke this isolation: corn, potatoes and tomatoes from the Americas were introduced to China in the 16th century, and were popularized all over the country in just 100 years. By the middle of the 18th century, the planting area of corn reached 10 million hectares, and the planting area of potatoes exceeded 3 million hectares, feeding a large number of people that would not have existed at all, directly promoting China's population growth from 100 million in the late Ming Dynasty to 300 million in the middle of the Qing Dynasty. After the compass, papermaking and gunpowder from China were introduced to Europe through the Arab world, they directly promoted the Renaissance and religious reform in Europe. Sugarcane planting technology from Africa and spice planting technology from Southeast Asia also spread all over the world with the trade network. This cross-continental civilization interaction was completely unimaginable before the Age of Exploration.
Secondly, the Age of Exploration is the starting point for the global spread of technology. Many technologies we are familiar with today were spread across continents in the global trade network during the Age of Exploration: for example, after Chinese compass technology was introduced to Europe by Arab merchants in the 12th century, European explorers combined it with the Arab astrolabe and the Indian quadrant to invent the "magnetic compass". The core principle of the magnetic compass is to install a magnetized steel needle on a balanced bracket, and use the geomagnetic field to make the steel needle point to the magnetic north pole, so as to determine the direction of navigation. In the 15th century, Portuguese explorers discovered the phenomenon of "magnetic declination" (that is, the magnetic north pole and the geographic north pole do not coincide, and there is an angle between the two, which can reach up to 20 degrees in the North Atlantic) by comparing astronomical observations with the direction of the magnetic compass, and made a "navigation compass" with magnetic declination correction scale, which controlled the navigation error within 5 degrees, and truly had the ability to cross the Atlantic. Another example is the Carrack technology in Europe, which combines the Arab lateen sail technology with the Chinese watertight compartment technology: the Carrack is a multi-masted ocean-going ship invented by Europe in the 15th century, usually equipped with three masts, with square sails on the foremast and mainmast, and Arab lateen sails on the mizzenmast, which can both use the westerlies to cross the ocean and adjust the course in the trade wind belt, with a displacement of up to 200-500 tons, which is three times that of the previous Mediterranean galley, with sufficient wind resistance and cargo capacity, and is the main ocean-going ship in the Age of Exploration. The integration and spread of these technologies were completely completed in the process of navigation, trade and colonial practice, without any government or organization leading, and is a typical "practice-driven technology diffusion".
