Chapter 1 /
Have you ever noticed that when you open your eyes in the morning, your room is actually talking to you?
Close your eyes and listen carefully——
Listen, the House Is Talking
Have you ever wondered why your front door is red, or maybe blue? Why does the kitchen always smell so good? Why does the living room have a big window, but your bedroom has a small one?
These things might seem ordinary, but if you think about them carefully, you'll discover——every house has something to say!
Let's start with your home. What color is it? Is it the green of trees, like a little elf living in the forest? Or the blue of the sky, where you can see stars twinkling at night? Maybe it's the yellow of sunshine, warm and making everyone want to smile?
When you walk through your door, what's the first thing that greets you?
Maybe it's the little shoes in the entryway, lined up and waiting for the next adventure. Maybe it's the sofa in the living room, soft and cozy, with that special spot where Mom and Dad watch the evening news. Maybe it's the smell drifting from the kitchen—whether it's savory braised meat or sweet cake, it's a unique smell that belongs only to your home—we call this the "home smell."
Every house has its own personality. Some houses are very tall, so tall that when you look out the window, people look like tiny ants and cars zoom like beetles. Some houses are short and round, like a little bear wearing a winter coat, making you feel safe and cozy. Some houses are long, with rooms connected one after another, like a magic tunnel leading to mysterious places.
What does your home look like? Is it tall, short, or long?
Stories of Schools
Now let's talk about school. What does your school look like?
If you look carefully, you'll discover that your school is talking too.
The blackboard in the classroom——though nowadays many schools use whiteboards or big electronic screens——is saying: "Kids, today we're going to learn something new!" Desks and chairs are arranged neatly in rows, like little trains, each row carrying a group of children to the faraway land of knowledge.
What about the playground? The playground is a big, open space that says: "Come here, run around, jump up and down, and make your body strong!" The track is round and round, like a giant donut, or like a little animal that never stops running, circling around and around the playground.
And the library! The library is a quiet house, and it speaks the most softly: "Shh—kids, walk gently, turn pages slowly, and let the stories from the books flow gently into your little heads." The library shelves are tall, rows after rows, like little mountains, and on each mountain live many, many interesting stories waiting for you to discover.
Special Buildings
Besides home and school, what other places have made a deep impression on you?
Maybe the train station? A train station is a magical place with a big clock pointing to the sky, saying: "Hurry, hurry, the train is about to leave!" Train stations have long platforms, like colorful rivers leading to distant places, and every train is a little fish, carrying people toward different dreams.
Maybe the amusement park? The Ferris wheel turns slowly, slowly, like a giant smiling face saying: "A little higher, a little higher, let's see farther!" The roller coaster rushes through the tracks, like a brave little dragon saying: "Don't be afraid, we're going to fly together!"
Maybe it's the little bridge near your home. Every morning, a little girl walks across it, carrying a pink backpack. In the evening, an old grandpa walks his brown dog slowly across the bridge. The bridge doesn't speak, but it remembers everyone who walks across it, every bicycle, every uncle and aunt hurrying to work. It collects all their stories and keeps them inside, turning itself into a magic box full of memories.
The Secret of Why Buildings Talk
Now you might ask: buildings are made of stone, bricks, steel, and cement. They don't have mouths, so how can they talk?
That's a great question! And that's exactly the magical part.
Buildings don't talk with their mouths. They speak with their shapes, their colors, their materials, their sizes, their locations. Every building has its own "language," and as long as you learn to listen, you can understand.
For example, a tall tower, like a thin pencil pointing straight up to the sky, what is it saying? It's saying: "Look at me, I'm so tall! From up here you can see very, very far!" That's the language of "height" speaking.
A round roof, like a giant hat covering the house, what is it saying? It's saying: "When it rains, water will slide down my curve, so the house won't get wet!" That's the language of "shape" speaking.
A little red wooden cabin in a green forest, what is it saying? It's saying: "I'm made from wood from the forest, and the big trees are my good friends. Living inside me is like being wrapped in the warm embrace of the forest!" That's the language of "material" speaking.
So when you learn to observe with your eyes and feel with your heart, you'll discover——buildings have been talking all along, saying so many things and telling so many stories!
A Journey Through Time and Space
As we talk about this, have you noticed that we've already begun a little journey?
Starting from your room, walking through the living room, kitchen, balcony; stepping out of home, passing streets, neighborhoods, parks; entering school, visiting classrooms, playgrounds, libraries; then going farther, to train stations, amusement parks, little bridges, big buildings...
Every step is a new story. Every place has a different voice.
And this journey isn't just about space——we'll also travel through time!
Imagine standing in front of an old c
