This sunny afternoon, eight-year-old Lily squatted in the sandpit of her community park, digging a “castle foundation” with her plastic shovel. But she suddenly stopped—she noticed several dark banana peels piled in the corner and a broken plastic sandal. She looked up and around: the rusty swing creaked in the wind, the blue-painted wooden bench had chipped paint revealing pale wood underneath, and the plastic mat under the slide was torn open like a grinning mouth. “This place seems… not happy,” Lily whispered, her fingers unconsciously picking at the warped wooden edge of the sandpit.
Lily stood up and ran to the nearest bench. She brushed her hand over the seat, her fingertips coated in a fine layer of dust. She then walked to the swing, grabbed the chain, and gave it a light pull. The chain emitted a dry, rasping sound; the screws at the joint seemed loose. On the steps of the slide, a few fallen leaves were stuck in wet, sticky stains. Lily’s frown deepened. She remembered that last spring, this park was vibrant—the swing was bright yellow, the bench shone with fresh paint, and the sand in the sandpit was as clean as sugar. But now, everything looked old, messy, and dirty.
“Mama, why did the park become like this?” Lily ran to her mother, who was reading a newspaper on the bench, pointing at everything around them. Her mother looked up and adjusted her glasses. “Oh, sweetie, the park has been used for many years, and many people play here. Things naturally get old. The property management does regular maintenance, but it might take time.” Lily shook her head. “But the swing’s screws are loose. If someone swings high, could they fall? There are banana peels in the sandpit. What if a little brother steps on them and falls? The slide is torn—could it catch a little girl’s dress?” She fired off a series of questions, her eyes bright with worry.
Her mother set down the newspaper and smiled, pulling Lily into a hug. “You’re so observant! These are important questions. But, sweetheart, the park belongs to everyone. The property management handles overall maintenance, but we can think of ways to help.” Lily tilted her head. “What ways? Like… is there someone whose job is to make the park better?”
“There is!” a gentle voice came from nearby. It was Uncle Chen from the third floor, walking his birdcage. He sat on the adjacent bench, and the parrot in his cage eyed Lily curiously. “Everything in the park, from the swing to the trash can, even the shovel in your hand, can be called a ‘product.’ And the person responsible for making these products more useful, safer, and more fun is called a ‘product manager.’”
“Product manager?” Lily repeated the new word. It felt like an odd, yet cool, building block.
“Yes! A product manager is like a ‘guardian spirit’ for the park,” Uncle Chen winked. “They might not fix the swing themselves, but they need to discover why the swing isn’t fun or safe, then come up with new ideas, draw plans, find workers, and finally make the new swing appear in the park. Their job is: to find problems and create solutions.”
Lily’s eyes widened. She looked down at the plastic shovel in her hand, then around at the old facilities. Suddenly, the whole world seemed different—behind every object, there might be a product manager.
“Can… I be a product manager?” Lily asked, her voice brimming with excitement.
Uncle Chen laughed heartily. “Of course! The most important ability of a product manager isn’t magic; it’s careful observation and thoughtful thinking. Look, you’ve already discovered the park’s problems—that’s the first step!”
Lily took a deep breath and looked at the park again. This time, her gaze didn’t just rest on “old” and “dirty.” She began scanning like a detective: Why were the swing chains rusty? Because they were exposed to rain without timely painting. Why did the wooden bench crack? Because the sun baked it and rain soaked it, and the paint peeled off. Why was there trash in the sandpit? Because the trash can was too far away, or it was too small and dirty itself. Why did the slide tear? Because the plastic aged, or the design didn’t consider how children play. Every problem was like a little seed sprouting in her heart.
“Uncle Chen,” Lily turned and said seriously, “if I were a product manager, I would first find out: what do people need most for the park to change? Safety? Cleanliness? Or fun?”
“Good question!” Uncle Chen nodded. “A product manager always starts with ‘people.’ You need to ask the kids playing in the sand, the moms with strollers, the grandpas taking walks—listen to their feelings. That’s ‘user research.’”
Lily acted immediately. She first ran to the sandpit and met a little boy building a castle. “Brother, what do you think of the sandpit?” The boy looked up, pouting. “The sand has stones; it hurts my feet! And there are no small shovels for sale here; I have to bring my own.” Lily noted: the sand needs sifting, and maybe a shared toy box.
She then approached an elderly lady feeding pigeons on the bench. “Grandma, do you like this bench?” The lady sighed. “I do, but it’s too hard; my back hurts after sitting long. In summer, it gets hot under the sun; in winter, it’s icy cold. It would be nice if it were softer and had a backrest.” Lily noted: the bench needs cushions and backrests, with material that stays cool in summer and warm in winter.
Finally, she observed the children on the swings. A five-year-old girl was afraid to swing by herself and needed her mom to push; an older boy wanted to do “flying” swings, but the chains were short, so he couldn’t go high. Lily thought: the swings might need adjustable chains, or a push handle.
“Uncle Chen, I found three big problems!” Lily ran back to Uncle Chen, out of breath. “The sandpit is uncomfortable, the bench isn’t practical, the swing isn’t fun or safe!”
“Great! So, what do you think the solutions could be?” Uncle Chen encouraged.
