Chapter 1: The Evolution of Fatherhood — A Historical Reshaping from Authority to Partnership

The Core Question
Why, in an era of gender equality and rapidly transforming family structures, is the traditional role of father no longer enough?
The numbers are stark. According to the 2023 data from China's National Bureau of Statistics, approximately 247 million children aged 0-14 live in dual-income families, where 47.3% of fathers spend less than one hour daily with their children, and only 12.6% spend more than two hours. The "present but invisible" father has become the most common and most hidden parenting pattern in contemporary China.
Throughout this book, we will challenge one fundamental assumption: that father absence is normal, acceptable, or even reasonable. Unlike mother absence, which has been extensively studied and institutionally compensated, father absence has been silently tolerated across cultures and centuries. This chapter is your first step toward dismantling that assumption.
Through this chapter, we will address three progressive questions: (1) How did the father's role evolve through history, and why has it taken its current shape? (2) What are the real costs of father absence to children? (3) In the new era, what capabilities must a "qualified" father possess?

1. The Three Historical Stages of Fatherhood: From Patriarch to Nurturer
Fatherhood is not innate — it is a product of its era. To understand the dilemmas of contemporary fathers, we must first trace how the identity of "father" has been shaped throughout history.
These three stages — Patriarch, Provider, Nurturer — are not simple linear replacements but layered accumulations. Contemporary Chinese fathers typically stand in the transitional zone between "Provider" and "Nurturer." They aspire to be nurturers, but their behaviors lag behind; they have economic capacity but lack emotional tools; they want to accompany, but they don't know how.
1.1 The Father in Agricultural Society: Patriarch and Authority
In agricultural society, the father's central role was that of the Patriarch, built on three pillars: land, lineage, and inheritance.
The first pillar was land. In agricultural economies, land was the primary means of production, and in most cultures it passed through patrilineal inheritance. Sons inherited land; daughters married out. This institutional arrangement made the father the embodiment of the land itself — the actual controller of the family's economic lifeline.
The second pillar was lineage. Agricultural societies were clan-based, with families often persisting for dozens of generations. The patriarch had to manage not only the nuclear family but also the entire lineage's order, disputes, rituals, and external relations. In this structure, the father's word carried near-legal authority.
The third pillar was inheritance and transmission. The father had to pass down land, craft, social relations, and family honor to the next generation. This was not tender "companionship" but solemn, ritualized "handover."
The father in agricultural society functioned primarily as an order maintainer, not a relationship connector. His authority was structural, not emotional. He did not need his children to like him; he needed them to obey him, inherit from him, and continue his line.
This stage has left deep cultural imprints on Chinese fatherhood that persist today: the "stern father" image, silent authority, restrained emotional expression, and the substitution of action for words. When we criticize contemporary Chinese fathers for being "unable to express love," we are actually criticizing a cultural pattern that has persisted for two millennia.
1.2 The Father in Industrial Society: Provider and Absentee
The Industrial Revolution triggered fatherhood's first "great transformation." After the steam engine emerged in the 1760s, the factory system quickly replaced home-based workshops, and male labor migrated en masse to cities. Production and family became spatially separated — fathers went to factories to earn money, mothers stayed home to care for children.
The direct consequence was that fathers became "Weekend Visitors" in their own homes. A typical industrial-era father worked 10-12 hours daily at the factory, mine, dock, or office, with perhaps one rest day and a few hours on Sunday for family.
Fatherhood's content fundamentally contracted: the equation "Good Father = Good Breadwinner" dominated Western society for nearly 200 years and has ruled post-reform China for nearly 40 years.
In 1956, American sociologist Talcott Parsons proposed his famous "Instrumental vs. Expressive Roles" framework. He argued that in the modern nuclear family, the husband takes the "instrumental role" — earning money, providing security, making major decisions — while the wife takes the "expressive role" — caring for emotions, maintaining relationships, attending to inner worlds. This theory was translated into dozens of languages and embedded in countless textbooks, profoundly shaping the global imagination of what a "normal family" looks like.
Parsons's theory was a historical turning point: it was the first time "earning" and "nurturing" were academically separated. But what Parsons failed to realize was that reducing the father to an "ATM and decision machine" was a narrowing of paternal identity. Men lost the cultural permission to build deep emotional connections with their children.
