The morning sun sneaked through the curtains and painted golden stripes on the floor. Youyou rubbed her sleepy eyes and sat up in bed. Today was the first day of summer vacation, and instead of sleeping in like she should, her mother had dragged her out of the covers.
"Youyou, wake up!" Her mother's voice called from downstairs. "Today you're going to clean your room properly! It's a mess!"
Youyou puckered her lips, reluctant to start the day. She was seven years old, just finishing first grade, a little girl with two pigtails and bright sparkling eyes. Though she wasn't very tall, her head was filled with the most wonderful imagination.
"If you can't sweep your room, how can you sweep the world?" Youyou mumbled while getting dressed, thinking to herself: But I'm not some important person, I'm just an elementary school student!
She shuffled downstairs in her slippers, drank a glass of milk in the kitchen, ate two pieces of toast, dawdled for a while longer, before finally trudging back to her room.
Youyou's room wasn't big, but it was indeed a bit messy. The blanket on the bed was bunched up in a ball, the pillow lying sideways. The desk was piled with picture books and colorful crayons, and dolls and a little red toy car were scattered on the floor. On the bookshelf in the corner, books stood at odd angles, some having干脆躺了下来 fallen over completely.
"Okay, okay, let's get to work." Youyou sighed, rolled up her sleeves, and decided to start with the easiest task—picking up the toys on the floor and putting them in the box.
She crouched down, put the red fire truck into the cardboard box, then lined up the dolls one by one, letting them sit on the top shelf of the bookcase like a row of tiny guards. After tidying up the toys, she started organizing the picture books on her desk.
"This one's been read, put it there... This one's been read too, put it here..." Youyou organized as she flipped through the stories she never tired of. Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty... she could recite every single one from memory.
Just as she was flipping through a thick picture book, a yellowed piece of paper fluttered out from between the pages, like a tired butterfly twirling slowly and gently landing at her feet.
She bent down to pick up the paper and discovered it was a map.
Youyou held the map up to the light, studying it carefully. The paper was very old, the corners curled up, and it had a rough, grainy texture. The lines on it were brown, looking as if they'd been drawn with some special kind of ink. In the center of the map was a drawing of a big tree, and beneath the tree was a small water-drop-shaped thing. In the corner of the map, in a wobbly hand, were written a few words:
"If you've found this map, it means fate has chosen you. Go to the old oak tree in the garden, and you will find your answers."
"Oh my, what's this?" Youyou wondered out loud to herself. "Could it be a treasure map that Grandma left behind?"
She remembered how mysterious Grandma had always been before she passed away, often telling her the most peculiar bedtime stories. Grandma said that long, long ago, there was a Letter Sprite Kingdom, where the residents were all letters that could talk. They had hands and feet, expressions and personalities, singing and dancing in their kingdom every day, learning the magic of phonics.
At the time, Youyou had just thought of those stories as something Grandma made up, and she'd always giggle while listening. Now, seeing this strange map, she suddenly had a peculiar feeling, as if those stories weren't just stories after all.
She decided to go check out the garden.
No sooner said than done. Youyou carefully folded the map and put it in her pocket, then ran downstairs, through the living room, pushed open the back door, and stepped into the backyard garden.
The backyard garden had been Grandma's favorite place. When Grandma was alive, she was always planting flowers and vegetables there, and Youyou had learned to recognize many plants跟着她。 The garden had a very large oak tree, said to be even older than Grandma. In spring, the oak tree would grow fuzzy acorns, and in autumn, golden leaves would cover the entire lawn.
Youyou walked through rows of flowers, around the tomatoes and cucumbers her mother had planted, and came to the old oak tree.
Youyou tilted her head back and looked at the canopy of green leaves, thinking to herself: Does the Letter Sprite Kingdom that Grandma talked about really exist?
Just then, her gaze landed on the lower part of the tree trunk.
Right where the roots met the earth, there was a door.
No, not an ordinary door. It was a water-drop-shaped blue wooden door, about half Youyou's height. The door frame was dark brown wood, the door panel a light sky blue with some silver wave patterns, looking as if a drop of blue water had been embedded in the tree trunk.
The door handle was silver, and its shape was very special—it was shaped like the capital letter A!
"A!" Youyou couldn't help but exclaim. "A is a letter! It's the first letter in the English alphabet!"
She was so excited her heart was racing. Those stories Grandma had told, about the Letter Sprite Kingdom... were they actually true?
She walked closer to the door and examined it carefully. The blue on the door panel was pure, like the color of the sky after rain. The silver waves glistened in the sunlight, like ripples on the water's surface.
Just as she reached out her hand, ready to push open this magical door—
She heard singing.
It was a gentle, soft song, like wind chimes gently swaying in the breeze, or like a stream flowing softly over stones. The singing came from the crack of the door, with a wonderful rhythm that made her heart flutter and want to join in.
Youyou stopped, listening intently. The song seemed to have lyrics, but she couldn't quite make them out. It sounded like it was singing about the tune of "ABCD," and also something about apples and ants.
"Who's there?" Youyo
