Chapter 1: Welcome to the Microscopic World — Understanding Molecules and Cells
---
Imagine holding an ordinary cold medicine pill in your hand. This tiny pill looks unremarkable—round, white or colored, possibly with a slightly strange taste. But what if you could shrink smaller than an ant by millions of times, like in the movie *Ant-Man*? You would discover a completely different world. This world is home to countless microscopic "residents," each busy with their own tasks, working together to keep your body functioning normally. This is the microscopic world we're about to explore—a magical realm full of wonders and mysteries.
In this microscopic world, the most fundamental residents are called atoms. Atoms are unbelievably small. If you lined up one hundred million atoms in a row, they would only stretch about one centimeter long. Imagine that—one centimeter is roughly the width of your thumbnail, and it takes one hundred million atoms to fill that space! To help you understand the size of an atom better, let's make a comparison: a grain of sand contains approximately ten quadrillion atoms, and your body contains about seven billion billion atoms. This number is so enormous that we can hardly form a concrete picture of it in our minds.
The ancient Greek philosopher Democritus was one of the first people to propose the concept of the "atom." Around 460 BCE, he came up with a revolutionary idea: all matter is composed of extremely small, indivisible particles. He called these particles "atomos," which means "indivisible" in Greek. Although he had no scientific instruments at the time to prove this idea, his insight was remarkably accurate. Modern science has proven that atoms do indeed exist, and that most of their structure is "empty"—the internal structure of an atom is more like a miniature solar system, with a nucleus at the center and rapidly moving electrons around it.

Now let's look more closely at the structure of an atom. Every atom consists of three fundamental particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons and neutrons cluster together at the center of the atom, forming the nucleus. Electrons orbit around the nucleus on "paths" at high speed, just like planets orbiting the Sun.
Protons carry a positive charge, neutrons are electrically neutral, and electrons carry a negative charge. In a stable atom, the number of protons equals the number of electrons, so the positive and negative charges cancel each other out, making the atom electrically neutral overall. Did you know that different types of atoms have different numbers of protons? A hydrogen atom has only 1 proton, a carbon atom has 6 protons, an oxygen atom has 8 protons, and an iron atom has 26 protons. The number of protons determines an atom's "identity," and scientists call this number the atomic number.
The world of atoms is so intricate that we can represent different atoms' structures with simple diagrams. The table above shows the most important elements in the human body:
| Element | Symbol | Atomic Number | Percentage in Human Body | |:------:|:------:|:------:|:------------------------:| | Oxygen | O | 8 | About 65% | | Carbon | C | 6 | About 18% | | Hydrogen | H | 1 | About 10% | | Nitrogen | N | 7 | About 3% | | Calcium | Ca | 20 | About 1.5% | | Phosphorus | P | 15 | About 1% |
As you can see, oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen make up the vast majority of the human body. They are like the basic Lego pieces that, through different combinations, construct the various molecules in our bodies.

Molecules: The Big Family of Atoms
When two or more atoms bond together, they form a molecule. A molecule is a collection of atoms connected by chemical bonds. Imagine atoms as a pile of building blocks, and molecules are the various structures you can build with these blocks. Two hydrogen atoms combined with one oxygen atom form a water molecule (chemical formula H₂O); two hydrogen atoms combined form a hydrogen gas molecule (chemical formula H₂); and one carbon atom combined with two oxygen atoms forms the carbon dioxide molecule I exhale (chemical formula CO₂).
The structure of a water molecule is quite interesting. Water molecules are not arranged in a straight line—the two hydrogen atoms form an angle of about 104.5 degrees with the oxygen atom, like a curved "V" shape. This special angle gives water molecules some unique properties; for example, water reaches its maximum density at 4 degrees Celsius, which is why ice floats on water instead of sinking. If ice sank, lakes and rivers would freeze from the bottom up in winter, and many aquatic organisms would not survive. Water molecules also have strong "cohesion," allowing water to form droplets and flow upward through plants, transporting nutrients from roots to leaves.
The Human Body's Molecule Types
The types of molecules in the human body are diverse and complex. The most important classes of biological molecules include:
Proteins — The executors of life. Proteins are giant molecules made up of amino acids, responsible for countless vital functions in the body: hemoglobin transports oxygen, antibodies fight disease, enzymes accelerate chemical reactions, and proteins in muscles allow us to move. Protein chains fold into specific three-dimensional shapes, and this shape determines their function.
Carbohydrates — Fuel for life. Sugars and starches are the main members of carbohydrates. They are composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms and are the body's primary energy source. When you eat a piece of bread or a bowl of rice, the carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which enters the bloodstream to provide energy for the body.
