认识小R——一只爱寻宝的机器狗 / Meet Little R, the Treasure-Hunting Robot Dog
A Strange Little Question Mark
It's 7:30 in the morning, and the sunlight has just climbed onto the windowsill. Little R is already sitting at the desk, ready for the day.
Little R is a robot dog, but he isn't made of tin—he's woven from a thousand soft strands of fluffy fur. He has round glass eyes, two radar-like ears that swivel this way and that, and a short, wagging battery-powered tail. His two favorite things in the world are searching and helping.
Today, his little owner—a girl with a red hairband and a big backpack on her back—is heading off to school.
"Little R, today we're going on a spring outing! The teacher might ask me some questions," the little girl says while putting on her shoes.
"Woof woof! No problem! I'll be right there with you!" Little R wags his tail.
But after the spring outing, something happened that puzzled Little R a lot.
That evening, the little girl was sitting at her desk doing homework. Her language teacher had assigned a short essay: "The most unforgettable thing about today's spring outing." But halfway through writing, she froze.
She turned around and looked at Little R, who was charging: "Little R, what did we see on top of the mountain today? Do you know?"
Little R's eyes flickered. Uh-oh, this was a problem.
Why? Because—although he's a super-smart robot dog—his job while accompanying the little girl was about "finding treasure maps," "guiding the way," and "reminding her to drink water." Those were his tasks. As for what the girl actually *saw*, that was something her own eyes and brain remembered, and he didn't automatically know it.
"I'm sorry... all I know is that you were very happy today, because your heartbeat kept going 'boom boom boom boom' faster than usual," Little R said sadly, his ears drooping.
The little girl sighed: "Aww, if only you could be like an encyclopedia and tell me everything I saw today!"
Little R's ears perked right up again. He suddenly thought of his good friend—
The big whale who lives up in the clouds, Little M.
"Right! I can go ask Little M!"
But then a new problem popped up...
Little M is a big whale who lives in an ocean of cloud servers. She's like a super huge encyclopedia. She speaks a thousand languages, can solve ten thousand math problems, and knows a hundred thousand ancient poems by heart. Her brain is filled with so much stuff—almost all of human knowledge is packed into her pages.
But Little M has one tiny weakness—
She doesn't know what happened today.
Her knowledge stops at a "memory line." It's like a date marked with a red marker on a page in her calendar. She knows everything before that line, but nothing after it.
So what did the little girl see on the mountaintop today? Things that happened "today"—those are exactly past her memory line.
Little R's little brain started spinning. He thought:
"If I go to Little M and ask 'what did we see on the spring outing today?', she'll definitely wag her tail and say, 'I don't know what happened today; go look somewhere else.'"
"But... I can go to the library first! I can find what I need and bring the materials to Little M, then she'll know everything!"
Suddenly, Little R's tail started wagging again, and his eyes lit up.
He had just discovered an amazing idea—
This idea is called RAG!

RAG是什么?三个字母的寻宝行动 / What is RAG? A Three-Letter Treasure Hunt
RAG is an English abbreviation made from the first letters of three English words. It stands for three things that happen, one after the other.
Let's break it apart and take a look:
R — Retrieval(检索),意思是"去找回来"。"
R — Retrieval, which means "to go and bring back." The "R" in the name "Little R" comes from "Retrieval." In Chinese, Retrieval is translated as 检索 (jiǎnsuǒ), which sounds very serious, but actually has a very simple meaning—to go to the library and find a book, a newspaper, a paragraph.
Little R's job is exactly this step. He is a robot dog who runs to the library all by himself. He sniffs and rummages through a big pile of books and notes, and when he finds the most useful piece, he picks it up in his mouth and runs back with it.
A — Augmented , which means "to make something stronger." This step is about saying: once we find the material, we should hand it over to the big whale, Little M, so that Little M can 'add' what's in the material into her own answer. Originally, Little M didn't know what happened "today," but now that she has the materials, she's like a knight wearing shining armor—she knows everything.
Think about it—doesn't "augmented" sound a lot like putting better gear on a little hero in a game? Before, the hero could only beat one little monster, but now they can beat ten!
G — Generation(生成),意思是"做出一个新东西"。
G — Generation , which means "to make something new." In the last step, Little M combines the materials with what she already knows, and then writes out an answer in her own words. This answer isn't copy-pasted from a book—it's a piece of text that she reorganizes after understanding.
So, the full story of RAG is:
Find → Add → Write
> First use R to find the material, then let A add the material to Little M, and finally let G have Little M write out a clever answer.
Put them all together, and you've got one complete "treasure hunt"!

大鲸鱼小M:脑子很大,记性很小 / The Big Whale Little M: Big Brain, Tiny Memory
In the last section, we mentioned that Little M has a "memory line." But why?
First, let's take a look at Little M's home. She lives in a great ocean called "the cloud." On the seabed there are silver server "islands," and every twinkling light on each island stands for one piece of knowledge she learned at some moment.
Little M's "father" is the "trainer"—he feeds Little M hundreds of billions of words every day. Fairy tales, encyclopedia entries, news reports, essays written by children, the laws of physics in the universe... Little M swallows them
