Have you ever imagined what it would be like to live over a thousand years ago? Imagine waking up one morning, looking out your window, and seeing not cars or buildings, but the vast ocean stretching out before you. Your home is made of wood, and the air smells like salt and pine trees. Your parents are preparing for a long voyage across the sea. This was everyday life for the Vikings!
Who Were the Vikings?
But here's a big surprise for you: Most of what you see in movies is wrong! Most Vikings did NOT wear helmets with horns. Can you imagine how silly that would be? The horns would get in the way, and it would be very hard to fight with a helmet like that!
Let me tell you a secret: the Vikings were much more interesting than the movie versions! They were sailors, traders, farmers, artists, storytellers, and yes—sometimes warriors. But being a warrior was just one small part of who they were.
The Vikings lived during a time we call the Viking Age, which lasted from about 793 AD to around 1100 AD—that's over 300 years! During this time, they changed the world in ways that people still talk about today.
So the next time you think about Vikings, remember: they were real people with real dreams, just like you!
The Viking Age
Our time machine is ready! Let's travel back to the Viking Age and see what the world was like.
The World in 793-1100 AD
But in the cold, northern part of Europe, something special was about to happen. The people living there—the Scandinavians—were about to make their mark on history.
Life in Scandinavia was tough. The land was rocky and not very good for farming. The winters were long and dark. But the people who lived there were tough too, and they learned to adapt to their environment in amazing ways.
The Vikings built incredible ships that could travel across the ocean. These ships were so well-made that they could sail from Scandinavia all the way to North America—over 500 years before Columbus!
During the Viking Age, everything changed. The Vikings went from being simple farmers to becoming explorers, traders, and yes—sometimes raiders. They traveled farther than anyone had ever traveled before, and they brought back stories, goods, and ideas that would change Europe forever.
When the Viking Age Ended
So what happened? Why did the Viking Age end?
Secondly, Christianity came to Scandinavia. Many Vikings converted to Christianity, and this brought an end to many of the old Viking traditions.
But even though the Viking Age ended, the Vikings' legacy lived on. Their descendants became the rulers of England, France, Sicily, and other places. Their language influenced many modern languages. And their sense of adventure and exploration inspired people for generations to come.
📚 Fun Fact! > > Did you know that during the Viking Age, these brave explorers discovered Iceland, Greenland, and even North America—about 500 years before Columbus! The Vikings were the first Europeans to reach North America.
Vikings' Homeland: Scandinavia
Now let's travel to Scandinavia, the Vikings' homeland!
Where Is Scandinavia?
Scandinavia is like a long, thin peninsula pointing north into the Arctic Ocean. It includes the countries we now call Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

Home Sweet Home
If you were a Viking child, your home would be very different from your home today!
Viking houses were called "longhouses" because they were long and narrow—kind of like a hallway that you could live in! A typical longhouse might be about 20 to 30 meters long. That's as long as two or three buses parked in a row!
Inside the house, there was usually a long hallway with a fire pit in the middle. The fire provided heat and light, and people cooked their food over it. At night, the whole family would sleep on benches along the walls, with warm furs to keep them cozy.
The whole extended family lived together in one longhouse—grandparents, parents, children, aunts, uncles, and sometimes even servants. It was crowded but warm and full of life!
Scandinavian Scenery
Scandinavia is famous for its beautiful and dramatic scenery. Imagine snow-capped mountains, deep fjords, countless lakes, and roaring waterfalls.
A fjord is like a long, narrow arm of the sea that cuts deep into the land. Millions of years ago, huge glaciers carved these deep valleys, and when the ice melted, the sea rushed in. Today, fjords look like long, blue ribbons winding between steep cliffs and mountains.
Norway has some of the most famous fjords in the world. The Sognefjord is over 204 kilometers long and reaches depths of 1,308 meters—that's deeper than many tall buildings are tall!
The Vikings lived right next to these fjords. The fjords were like superhighways for the Vikings—they could sail their ships right into the heart of the land, and when the weather got rough, the fjords provided shelter.
📚 Fun Fact! > > Norway's coastline is so long that if you stretched it out, it could go around the Earth more than twice! That's why the Vikings were such great sailors—they grew up right next to the sea!
What's in a Name?
Now you might be wondering: where did the name "Viking" come from? Let's find out!
What Does "Viking" Mean?
The word "Viking" probably comes from the Old Norse word "vík," which means "bay" or "fjord." Add a suffix, and "víkingr" means something like "someone who lives in or vis
