At 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918, in Marshal Foch's special train carriage in the Compiègne Forest northeast of Paris, France, the Armistice of Compiègne, still wet with ink, was formally handed to the German delegation. Cheers erupted outside the carriage, and the Allied representatives relaxed their grip on the pens they had clutched for four years; some were already planning post-war vacations. No one noticed the scribbled notes in the notebook of a young Scottish Royal Engineers officer tucked in a corner of the carriage: "The reflection of radio waves in the air might be used to detect distant metal objects." This young man named Robert Watson-Watt had no idea that this seemingly fanciful note would, two decades later, become the "lifeline" of the Battle of Britain, and also the cornerstone of the most critical defensive technology throughout World War II.
On the same day, 24-year-old mathematician Marian Rejewski stared at intercepted German radio ciphertext in a cipher bureau office in Warsaw, Poland. The smoke of World War I had barely cleared, and the Second Polish Republic had just been reborn, with Germany to the west and the Soviet Union to the east both eyeing this land covetously. Rejewski had been studying German encryption methods for three consecutive months, and he found that the pattern of these ciphertexts was very strange: the same letter would never be encrypted into the same letter. This seemingly simple rule hid an encryption machine he had never seen before. He did not know that this machine, called "Enigma" (meaning "riddle") by the German army, would become the communications barrier for Hitler's blitzkrieg twenty years later, and that he and his two colleagues would be the only ones who could tear through this barrier.
Also in 1918, in the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin, Germany, 39-year-old physicist Otto Hahn stared at the results of his just-completed experiment. He bombarded uranium atoms with neutrons and found that barium, an element with only half the atomic weight of uranium, appeared in the products. His Jewish colleague Lise Meitner later explained this phenomenon with $E=mc^2$: the uranium nucleus split into two lighter nuclei under the bombardment of neutrons, and the lost mass was converted into huge energy, which is nuclear fission. Hahn only wrote about the experimental phenomenon in his paper and did not mention military value, but Meitner's nephew, physicist Frisch, wrote in a submission to *Nature*: "If this process can be controlled, the energy released by the complete fission of 1 kilogram of uranium is equivalent to 20,000 tons of TNT explosive." This 300-word short comment was the first public proposal in the world of the possibility of nuclear weapons.
In the same year, in the Royal Air Force cadet team in the UK, 22-year-old Frank Whittle stared at the wake of the propeller plane. He had been flying propeller planes for three years and knew that the speed limit of this kind of plane was about 700 kilometers per hour. If it went faster, the propeller would disintegrate because the tip speed exceeded the speed of sound. He wrote in his notebook: "Future planes should use gas turbine engines, which spray air directly backward and move forward by reaction force. This kind of engine has no speed limit of propellers." When his instructor saw this note, he mocked him: "Young man, you'd better write science fiction. This kind of engine needs more fuel than the plane itself, so it's impossible to be practical." Whittle did not know that Hans von Ohain in Germany had proposed almost the same jet propulsion concept in the same year, and that these two concepts would raise the speed limit of fighter planes to more than 1000 kilometers per hour twenty years later.
The British military cut 70% of its air force after the 1918 armistice, and military spending was cut to one-third of pre-war levels, with most military science and technology projects being halted. Watson-Watt was retained at the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) because of his previous achievements in radio interference research, but his research focused on civilian meteorological detection rather than military use. It was not until 1934 that the British Air Ministry suddenly came to him and asked if he could use radio waves to shoot down planes, the so-called "death ray" project.
Watson-Watt quickly calculated that to shoot down planes with radio waves, a power of at least 1 million kilowatts was needed, which the UK could not produce at that time. But he added casually: "However, if we just use radio waves to detect the existence of planes, we don't need such high power, tens of kilowatts is enough." This sentence interested the Air Ministry officials, who were then troubled by the problem of night air defense: the bombers in World War I flew during the day and could be spotted with the naked eye, but the bombers in the 1930s could fly to an altitude of 5,000 meters and fly at night, so they could not be seen with the naked eye at all. The British air defense system was almost naked at night.
In February 1935, Watson-Watt conducted a public test in Daventry: he used the BBC's shortwave broadcast antenna to emit radio waves with a power of only 50 kilowatts, and successfully received the reflected signal when a biplane flew 15 miles away. When the test report was sent to the Air Ministry, the officials' first reaction was to question: "You must have cheated using searchlights or some other method. How can radio waves detect planes that far?" Watson-Watt conducted a second test on the spot, in front of all the officials, letting the plane fly to an invisible place, and the pointer on the receiver did move as expected. The officials finally believed it, but they were still hesitant: should they invest a large amount of money to build such a system?
