Welcome to the Cold and Beautiful North
In the far north of our planet, there lies a magical land. There, the sky often shimmers with green and purple lights, as if countless invisible spirits were dancing in the night heavens. There, mountains rise into the clouds, their peaks forever crowned with white snow. There, deep bays stretch between towering cliffs, where silver waterfalls cascade down. This land is Scandinavia—a place whose very name sounds a bit cold.
Today, I want to introduce you to a little girl who lives there. Her name is Little Snow, because on the day she was born, the first snow of winter was falling from the sky. Little Snow has golden hair that shines like autumn wheat fields. Her eyes are blue, just like the color of the sea in front of her home. Whenever she blinks, it seems as if you can see the ocean breathing gently.
Little Snow's home is in a country called Norway. The name Norway means "the road to the north." Imagine if you kept walking north, and north, and north, walking and walking until there was no more road to walk on—you would arrive in Norway. In a way, Norway is where that road ends, the final stop of nature's most northern creation.
Little Snow's house is very special. It's not built on flat ground but sits on a small hillside. The house is made of wood, with a red roof and white walls. In the snowy white winters, it looks just like an illustration from a picture book. Little Snow's favorite spot is the big window at the front of the house. Through that window, she can see the entire fjord spread out before her.
What is a fjord, you ask? Little Snow would tell you that a fjord is like a long arm of the sea reaching into the land. Imagine a giant hand reaching up from the Arctic Ocean and deeply scooping into Norway's coastline, leaving behind crack after crack. Those cracks are the fjords—steep cliffs on both sides with deep blue seawater in between.
Every morning when Little Snow wakes up, the first thing she does is peer out the window. The fjord is most beautiful in the early morning. The sun has just peeped out from behind the eastern mountains, and golden sunlight sparkles on the sea, as if someone has scattered a handful of diamonds across the water. Sometimes a thin mist drifts across the sea, rising slowly and wrapping around the mountain peaks, making the entire fjord look like it's wearing a soft white纱裙 (muslin dress).
"Look, Little Snow!" Every morning at this time, Little Snow's grandfather would come over with a cup of hot cocoa, standing beside her to enjoy the view together. The grandfather's beard is also golden, just like Little Snow's hair, only a lighter shade, like winter sunlight shining on dried grass.
"Grandpa, will it be a nice day today?" Little Snow asked. She knew that Grandpa was more accurate than any weather forecast, because when he was young, he was a sailor who had sailed the great oceans for forty years.
Grandpa squinted at the sky and sniffed the air, then said with a smile, "Today will be a good day. The sea is calm, good for sailing. But there might be clouds in the afternoon. If we're lucky, we might see the Northern Lights tonight."
"The Northern Lights!" Little Snow's eyes sparkled. She has seen the Northern Lights many times, but every time feels like the first time—she gets just as excited. The Northern Lights are called "Aurora" in Norwegian, which means "Goddess of Dawn." They say that long, long ago, Aurora would dance across the sky, her beautiful movements telling people that darkness would pass and light would surely come.
"Grandpa," Little Snow sipped her hot cocoa and asked curiously, "I heard that a very, very long time ago, people from here used to sail big ships to places far, far away. Is that true?"
Grandpa's expression suddenly became serious. He put down his cup and gazed out at the distant sea, as if looking at scenes from long, long ago.
"That is true, Little Snow," Grandpa said slowly, "about a thousand years ago, your ancestors—those people called Vikings—sailed ships called dragon-head longships to places all over the world. They went to England, Ireland, France, even to the distant Byzantine Empire. Their footsteps spread across all of Europe."
"Vikings?" Little Snow's eyes grew even wider, "Were they warriors? Were they good fighters?"
Grandpa laughed, his laughter sounding like waves crashing against rocks. "They were indeed warriors, but they weren't just fighters. They were clever sailors, excellent craftsmen, brave explorers. They invented special ships—ships that could sail in very shallow water and also withstand the wild storms of the ocean. They developed clever navigation methods, finding their way home by following stars and ocean currents."
Little Snow was completely captivated. She imagined those Vikings sailing their dragon-head longships across the rolling waves. The bow was carved with terrifying dragon heads, the sails bore strange patterns, and warriors wore fur clothing, round helmets, and held shields and axes in their hands. Just imagining that scene made Little Snow's heart race.
"Grandpa," Little Snow asked, "why did they go to sea? Wasn't it good enough here?"
Grandpa was silent for a moment, then pointing to the fjord outside the window, he said, "Look, our home here is indeed beautiful, but do you know? Long, long ago, this place was actually very poor. The land was scarce and barren, unable to grow much food. The winters were cold and long, sometimes snow would fall for months on end. The sea would freeze, and ships couldn't go out. People often went hungry."
"However," Grandpa's eyes sparkled, "Norwegians have explorer blood flowing through their veins. Our ancestors, though poor, were brave, clever, and never gave up. When they couldn't find a way forward at home, they decided to go out into the world—to see beyond their horizons, to seek new opportunities, to create new lives."
Little Snow nodded, half understanding. She was still too young to fully comprehend what poverty was, or what it meant to have no way forward. But she could feel the pride and emotion in Grandpa's words.
