When one stands beneath the Meridian Gate of the Forbidden City in Beijing and gazes upward, the starry sky above is the very same sky that Babylonian astrologers contemplated from their temple steps two millennia ago. Yet these two groups of observers described the celestial sphere above and the human life below in entirely different languages. This difference is no accident but rather reflects how two great civilizations, in their exploration of cosmic mysteries, walked two distinct yet remarkably convergent paths. In this opening chapter, we embark on a journey across time and space to understand how Eastern metaphysics and Western astrology each grew from their cultural soil, and why they resonate so deeply in human thought today.
To understand the essence of the Eastern metaphysical system, we must return to the source of Chinese civilization—the I Ching, or Book of Changes. This classic, composed over three thousand years ago, was originally not a divination text but a record of political decisions made by Zhou dynasty nobility. However, over time, the I Ching evolved into a philosophical masterpiece articulating the laws governing cosmic transformation. The core concept of "Yi" itself embodies profound wisdom: the character can be understood as "change" (变化) but also as "simplicity" (简易). The principles governing cosmic operations may seem complex and variable, yet they can be grasped through a few simple symbols and fundamental rules.
The foundational structure of the I Ching rests upon a brilliant mathematical invention: the eight trigrams. These eight symbols—Qian (☰), Dui (☱), Li (☲), Zhen (☳), Xun (☴), Kan (☵), Gen (☶), Kun (☷)—each consist of three lines, either all yang (three solid lines), all yin (three broken lines), or a mix of solid and broken lines. These eight trigrams can be combined in pairs to form sixty-four hexagrams, each hexagram representing a specific situation and pattern of transformation. From the simplest arrangement of three yin-yang lines emerges such a rich system of meaning—an elegant expression of cosmic complexity.
The I Ching, however, does not stand as an isolated philosophical system. It intertwines intimately with another core concept—Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang are not simply binary opposition but rather a dynamic equilibrium. Just as day and night do not destroy each other but alternate in dominance; just as inhalation and exhalation interdepend to sustain life. The essence of Yin-Yang is "relational existence"—they only acquire meaning in mutual contrast. More importantly, Yin and Yang are not static states but a continuum: from pure Yang to pure Yin, countless gradual transitional stages exist between. This contrasts sharply with the either/or binary thinking common in Western philosophy.
If Yin-Yang describes the fundamental binary relationships of the cosmos, the Five Element theory further reveals the mechanism of cosmic dynamic evolution. The Five Elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water—are not merely these five substances themselves but represent five basic functional properties and modes of movement. Wood symbolizes growth, expansion, and orderly development; Fire symbolizes heat, rising, and illumination; Earth symbolizes bearing, transformation, and centeredness; Metal symbolizes contraction, descending, and purification; Water symbolizes flowing, nourishing, and downward movement. Complex relationships of generation (相生) and conquest (相克) exist among these five elements: Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, and Water generates Wood, forming a cyclical generative chain; while Wood conquers Earth, Earth conquers Water, Water conquers Fire, Fire conquers Metal, and Metal conquers Wood, creating a balanced network of mutual restraint.
One of the most astonishing applications of Five Element theory is in Traditional Chinese Medicine. TCM holds that the five zang organs—Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lung, Kidney—correspond respectively to the Five Elements: Liver is Wood, Heart is Fire, Spleen is Earth, Lung is Metal, Kidney is Water. When one organ functions improperly, TCM does not view that organ in isolation but uses Five Element generation-conquest relationships to understand its imbalance within the entire body system, formulating treatment strategies accordingly. For instance, when someone displays symptoms of excessive Heart Fire (insomnia, irritability, mouth sores), TCM might apply the method of "draining the south to supplement the north"—draining Heart Fire (south) and supplementing Kidney Water (north)—because Water conquers Fire, and Heart belongs to Fire while Kidney belongs to Water. This holistic mode of thinking is the core characteristic of Eastern wisdom.
While Eastern sages inscribed the mysteries of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements on bamboo strips and silk, on the other side of the Earth, another group of people gazed at the starry sky, attempting to read divine will and human destiny from celestial arrangements. The origins of Western astrology can be traced to the fertile plains of Mesopotamia—the Fertile Crescent between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers—around 2000 BCE.
Babylonian priests—who served both religious and astronomical functions—noticed five special "stars" in the sky whose trajectories differed from the fixed background of stars (the precursor to the twelve zodiac signs). These five planets—Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn—were then called "wandering stars" to distinguish them from relatively stationary stars. Through generations of persistent observation, Babylonian priests precisely recorded these planets' orbital periods and discovered certain correlations between their movements and significant terrestrial events such as floods, harvests, wars, and dynastic changes. This correlation was initially understood as direct divine intervention: each planet embodied a deity, and planetary movements reflected the gods' moods and intentions.
However, Babylonian astrology was not the "pe
