Chapter 1: Departure! How Big is Our Earth?
The afternoon sunlight streamed through the glass dome of the Youth Science Academy exhibition hall, filling the space with an atmosphere of discovery. Colorful science displays and interactive installations adorned every corner, while a magnificent globe model stood prominently at the center of the hall, its deep blue surface radiating a gentle glow as if silently inviting everyone who passed by to touch it and learn about it. Xiao Yu, a Chinese boy, stood before the globe, his eyes sparkling with curiosity. His fingers traced gently across unfamiliar place names—from Beijing to London, from New York to Sydney—each city representing an enigma waiting to be unraveled in his mind.
Just then, a crisp voice called out from behind him.
"Wow, this globe is so intricately made!" A blonde girl walked over quickly, her bright blue eyes reflecting the same burning curiosity. "Look, it shows the ocean currents and the directions of monsoons!"
Xiao Yu turned around and met the girl's gaze. He noticed a badge in the shape of the British flag pinned to her chest and spoke in fluent English: "Hello, I'm Xiao Yu. Are you from the United Kingdom?"
The girl smiled with delight: "My name is Emily, hello! I'm indeed from London. My mom is Chinese and my dad is British, so I can speak a little Chinese!" Her imperfect Mandarin pronunciation made Xiao Yu laugh.
Thus, these two young people from different countries met at the science exhibition. Both possessed an intense curiosity about the unknown world and dreamed of someday traveling around the globe to explore all its secrets. Xiao Yu shared his favorite geography knowledge with Emily—the formation of oceans and continents; Emily told him about her passion for astronomy and her longing to understand the infinite mysteries of the universe. The more they talked, the more they realized they had found another version of themselves in each other.
The Discovery of the Mysterious Map
As the two were deeply engrossed in their conversation, the exhibition hall lights suddenly dimmed. A spotlight beamed down from the dome, illuminating a display case in the corner that had never caught their attention before. Inside the case lay a yellowed piece of parchment, covered densely with lines and symbols.
"Oh my goodness, what's that?" Emily exclaimed, her eyes widening with astonishment.
Xiao Yu grabbed Emily's hand and quietly approached the display case. The surrounding crowd seemed completely absorbed by this sudden change, and no one noticed the two children trying to get closer to the mysterious map. Just then, a deep but powerful voice echoed through the exhibition hall.
"Young people, since you are drawn to this map, it must mean you have a destiny with it."
Xiao Yu and Emily turned around simultaneously to find an elderly man standing behind them. The old man wore a pair of round-framed glasses and a faded khaki exploration jacket adorned with various shaped badges—each badge seemingly representing a distant place in the world. Despite his cloudy eyes, there was now a sharp gleam shining within them.
"Who... who are you?" Emily asked timidly.
The old man stroked his long beard, a mysterious smile appearing at the corners of his mouth: "They call me the Geography Guardian. Over the past fifty years, I have traveled to every corner of this Earth, witnessed the most magnificent scenery of this blue planet, and discovered many natural mysteries hidden beyond the maps."
Xiao Yu's heart raced: "Grandpa Guardian, what's drawn on that map?"
The Geography Guardian bent down, looking meaningfully at the two young people: "That is a map documenting Earth's secrets. Throughout the long river of human civilization, there are always places endowed by nature with special power and significance—lost civilizations, unique natural wonders, and secrets waiting for those who truly understand Earth to discover."
He paused, then pulled out an ancient compass from his pocket—the compass needle glinting with an unusual glow in the sunlight: "Each marker on this map represents a secret location across Earth's seven continents. However, before you can embark on this journey to find these secrets, you must first prove that you truly understand our planet."
Emily and Xiao Yu glanced at each other, both seeing the same excitement and anticipation reflected in each other's eyes. In unison, they said: "We're willing to accept the challenge!"
Earth's Shape: It's Not Flat!
The Geography Guardian nodded with satisfaction, then led the two young people to a small conference room at the back of the exhibition hall. The room was filled with various globes, maps, and scientific instruments. The old man took a delicate globe from the bookshelf and turned it gently.
"Do you know what shape the Earth is?" he asked.
"That's too easy!" Xiao Yu answered confidently. "Earth is an ellipsoid. More precisely, it's an oblate spheroid—slightly flattened at the poles and slightly bulging at the equator."
The Geography Guardian nodded approvingly: "Very good answer. But have you ever wondered, throughout human history, there were people who firmly believed the Earth was flat? In fact, the concept of 'flat Earth' existed in human thinking for thousands of years, until around 500 BCE when the ancient Greek mathematician Pythagoras first proposed that the Earth might be spherical."
Emily tilted her head thoughtfully: "So how did ancient people prove the Earth was spherical?"
"Excellent question!" A gleam of appreciation sparkled in the old man's eyes. "As early as around 240 BCE, the ancient Egyptian mathematician and astronomer Eratosthenes designed a simple yet ingenious experiment to measure Earth's circumference. He noticed that in the Egyptian city of Syene (now Aswan), at noon on the summer solstice, sunlight reached directly down to the bottom of a deep well, indicating the sun was directly overhead. But at the same time, in the northern city of Alexandria, the sunlight formed an angle of approximately 7.2 degrees with the ground."
