Introduction: Research Framework and Core Issues of Silk Road Urban Network
The Silk Road, as the core corridor for cross-regional civilizational exchange in human history, has always been a key research topic in historical geography, archaeology, and the history of international relations. Since the second half of the 19th century, when Western explorers conducted archaeological surveys along the Silk Road, academic research on Silk Road cities has undergone a paradigm shift from "site listing" to "network analysis". However, existing studies mostly focus on archaeological excavations of single cities or trade history of specific routes, lacking a systematic quantitative analysis of the core section from Chang'an to Samarkand from the perspective of the "trade-driven cultural exchange" mechanism, which is the core academic gap this book aims to fill.
The first stage: the exploration and archaeological paradigm from the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century This stage of research was centered on archaeological surveys by Western explorers. Its core contribution was the discovery of a large number of Silk Road sites and the clarification of the basic route framework of the Silk Road, but its limitation was treating cities as isolated trading outposts without establishing a network perspective. In 1879, Russian explorer Przevalsky discovered the Loulan site in the Lop Nur region, confirming for the first time the existence of the "Loulan Kingdom" recorded in the *Book of Han: Biography of the Western Regions*. In 1900, Swedish explorer Sven Hedin re-excavated Loulan, unearthing a large number of Chinese wooden slips, silk fragments, and Hellenistic-style woolen fabrics, proving that Loulan was the intersection node of the north and south routes of the Silk Road. In 1907, British archaeologist Aurel Stein discovered the Library Cave at the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, unearthing more than 40,000 documents, silk paintings, and printed materials from the 4th to the 11th centuries, including a large number of Sogdian, Uighur, and Tibetan trade contracts, providing direct historical materials for the study of Silk Road trade. In 1914, French sinologist Paul Pelliot selected more than 6,000 premium documents from the Library Cave, among which the *Illustrated Classic of the Shazhou Prefecture* detailed the locations of passes, post stations, and water sources along the Silk Road, providing core evidence for the later restoration of Silk Road routes.
The research at this stage also had obvious limitations: first, the research motivation was mostly for cultural relic plunder rather than academic sorting, and a large number of unearthed cultural relics were lost overseas, leading to the fragmentation of research materials; second, there was a lack of cross-regional comparative perspective, and the attention to Central Asian and West Asian Silk Road cities was far lower than that of domestic Chinese sites; third, the analysis framework of "city-network-mechanism" was not established, and it only stayed at the descriptive level of a single site.
The second stage: the interdisciplinary integration paradigm from the mid-20th century to the late 20th century Since the 1950s, with the systematic advancement of archaeological excavations, the academic community has broken the limitations of a single discipline and studied Silk Road cities from the interdisciplinary perspectives of history, archaeology, and geography. In the 1950s, French scholar Chavennes systematically studied the Western Regions city-states recorded in the *Records of the Grand Historian* and the *Book of Han* in *Historical Materials on the Western Turks*, and for the first time sorted out the evolution and functions of 18 major Silk Road cities from Chang'an to Samarkand, clarifying the core cognition that "city-states are the basic units of Silk Road trade". In the 1970s, Japanese scholar Sato Osamu restored the trade tax system of the Tang Dynasty's Xizhou (present-day Turpan) through the study of unearthed documents in Turpan, proving that Xizhou was the core transit city in the eastern section of the Silk Road, with more than 3,000 transit caravans every year, and trade tax accounted for 42% of the Tang Dynasty's financial revenue in the Western Regions. In the 1980s, Chinese scholar Shi Nianhai proposed the coupling relationship theory of "Silk Road pass-oasis city" in *Theory and Practice of Historical Geography*, pointing out that the rise and fall of Silk Road cities are directly related to the establishment of passes and the supply of water resources in oases. For example, the abandonment of Loulan was due to the drying up of water sources caused by the diversion of the Tarim River, rather than the transfer of trade routes.
In 1988, UNESCO launched the "Dialogue of the Silk Roads" international research project, organizing historians, archaeologists, and geographers to conduct joint surveys of more than 200 sites in more than 30 countries along the Silk Road, and for the first time published the *World Heritage List of the Silk Road*, clarifying 56 Silk Road world cultural heritage sites, 21 of which are in the section from Chang'an to Samarkand. The research at this stage began to pay attention to the correlation between cities, but it was still mainly qualitative description, and no quantifiable network analysis framework was established, nor did it distinguish the differential impact of different driving factors such as trade, religion, and war on cultural exchange.
The third stage: the quantitative network research paradigm since the 21st century Since the 21st century, with the maturity of spatial analysis technology and social network analysis methods, the academic community has begun to use quantitative methods to analyze the structure and evolution of Silk Road urban networks. In 2004, the University of Oxford launched the Silk Road Urban GIS Project, building a spatial database containing 127 Silk Road site
