The World of the Grasslands: Nature and Civilization on the Mongolian Plateau in the 12th Century
Before we embark on this exciting historical journey, please imagine this scene: a vast expanse of land stretching to the horizon, where green grass ripples like waves in spring and summer, and snow blankets everything in silver during autumn and winter. There are no bustling cities here, no sturdy city walls—only blue sky, white clouds, horses, and herders who follow the water and grass. This is the Mongolian Plateau—the land that shaped one of the greatest empires in history.
The Mongolian Plateau sits in the heart of Eurasia, between 42° and 52° north latitude, with an average elevation exceeding 1,500 meters. The climate here is extreme and variable: summers are short and hot, while winters are long and harsh, with temperatures dropping to minus 40 degrees Celsius. Blizzards sweep in from Siberia, carrying snowflakes that fill the sky—herders call these "white-haired winds." Yet it was precisely this harsh natural environment that forged the resilient and highly adaptable grassland peoples.
On this land, water sources and pastures are the most precious resources. Mongolian herders migrate according to seasonal changes: in spring, they move to sunny slopes to help livestock recover from the weakness of late winter; in summer, they migrate to lush lowlands where water and grass are abundant, allowing livestock to gain weight; in autumn, they prepare winter fodder and slaughter some livestock to store meat; in winter, they seek valleys sheltered from the wind to escape the cold. This lifestyle, known as "nomadism," required herders to be proficient in astronomical and geographical knowledge, capable of accurately judging weather changes, while also possessing strong physiques and a spirit of collective cooperation.
The 12th-century Mongolian Plateau was not a unified place but rather home to dozens of tribes of varying sizes. According to Mongol legends, the ancestors of these tribes trace back to a divine beast called the "Blue Wolf" and a fairy named "White Stag." This legend reflects the grassland people's worship of the wolf—as the most powerful predator on the steppe, wolves served as the Mongols' spiritual totem, symbolizing ferocity, unity, and indomitable spirit.
The major tribal groups included: the Mongols (located around the Khentii Mountains, the tribe to which Genghis Khan belonged), the Kereits (a powerful tribe that practiced Nestorian Christianity), the Naimans (occupying the western Tianshan region with a more developed culture), the Tatars (distributed across the Hulunbuir grasslands, with close ties to the Jin Dynasty), the Merkits (skilled in handicrafts, frequently in conflict with other tribes), the Onggirats (famous for producing beautiful women), and others. These tribes formed alliances at some times and waged wars at others, with kinship ties, marriage bonds, and shared interests weaving together a complex political web.

Temujin's Childhood: Growing Through Hardship
In 1162, on a stormy winter night, Hoelun, wife of Yesugei, khan of the Mongols' Borjigin clan, gave birth to a baby boy. Yesugei had just captured a Tatar warrior on the battlefield, so he named his son "Temujin"—meaning "the finest iron." This infant, born amid the flames of war, would one day become Genghis Khan, the man who would change the course of world history.
Temujin's childhood was far from a fairy tale. At the age of nine, his father Yesugei took him to the Onggirat tribe to arrange a marriage. According to steppe customs, the future groom would live with his future father-in-law for a period to learn hunting and combat skills. Yesugei left Temujin at the home of Dai Setchen, chief of the Onggirats, and returned to his tribe alone. However, on the way, Yesugei was recognized by the Tatars—who had long been enemies of the Mongols. They recognized Yesugei by his attire and horses and poisoned his wine. Yesugei barely made it back to Dai Setchen's home, already at death's door. Dai Setchen sent people to find Temujin, allowing him to see his father one last time. On his deathbed, Yesugei entrusted Temujin to a loyal tribesman, asking him to raise the boy to adulthood.
Yesugei's death became a turning point in Temujin's fate. The tribe quickly abandoned the family—the chiefs of the Tayichiud believed a widow and her children were not worth caring for, and they left with most of the people and livestock. Hoelun had to take young Temujin, his brothers Hasar, Hachi'un, and Temuge, along with his half-brothers Belgutei and Bekhter, and survive by the banks of the Onon River. The young Temujin and his brothers could only survive by fishing and catching birds, sometimes even digging up plant roots to eat.
However, fate's test of Temujin was just beginning. One day, Temujin and Hasar shot and killed a lark, which belonged to their half-brothers Belgutei and Bekhter. Bekhter flew into a rage and scolded them, even striking Temujin. Temujin and Hasar harbored resentment and together shot and killed Bekhter, wounding Belgutei. This tragic fratricide was vividly recorded in The Secret History of the Mongols. Later, Hoelun severely reprimanded Temujin and Hasar, telling them that unity within the family was more important than anything. This incident became one of the few blemishes on Temujin's life, but it also taught him the profound importance of unity.
When Temujin was around twelve or thirteen, the chief of the Tayichiud feared he would become a threat when he grew up and had him captured and paraded with a wooden cangue. Temujin escaped with the help of a kind-hearted man and received assistance from a young warrior named Borchu. Borchu later became one of Temujin's most loyal comrades and most trusted generals. This experience taught Temujin a profound truth: in this dog-eat-dog world, only by having one's own strength and followers can one protect oneself and one's family.

A Difficult Rise: From Prisoner to Lord of the Grasslands
