In a sunny garden, the peach blossom and plum blossom were neighbors. The peach blossom loved spring; whenever the spring breeze blew, it would bloom with a pink smile. The plum blossom, however, preferred winter; even when heavy snow fell, it stood proudly in bloom. One day, little plum blossom asked curiously: “Sister Peach, why can’t we bloom at the same time? Is my fate doomed to loneliness in the cold?” The peach blossom replied gently: “This isn’t fate, but the规律 (regular pattern) of our lives! Just like birds build nests in spring and squirrels hide food in autumn, every living thing has its own schedule.”
You might wonder: Is the blooming of flowers really just a “规律 (pattern)” and not “命运 (fate)”? If the plum blossom complained about the cold winter and someone told it, “This is your fate, accept it,” would it be happy? Of course not! Actually, the plum blossom is very proud—it is the winter messenger, using its white flowers to tell the world: “Look, cold can’t make me bow down!” This shows that when we call things “命运 (fate)” that cannot be changed, we often feel helpless; but if we discover “there are reasons and rhythms behind things,” that’s “规律 (law/pattern)”. 规律 (Pattern) is like a silent mentor; it doesn’t force you, but tells you: understand it, and you can better be yourself.
So, what exactly is the difference between fate and pattern? Let’s compare with a simple table:
(A repeating rule that can be discovered and used) | | 例子 (Example) | “我生来就笨,学不好数学!” (“I’m born stupid, I can’t learn math!”) (“Practice daily, and math will improve!”) (A paper already written with an ending) | 一张待绘制的地图 (A map waiting to be drawn) |
The ancients had no microscopes or telescopes, but they had observant eyes and curious hearts. They looked up at the stars and down at flowers, discovering that the world seemed to have a huge “地图 (map)”—a map marking when to sow seeds, when to harvest, when wind and rain would come. They wondered: Who drew this map? Can we draw a map of our own?
The ancients of the East, such as those in China’s Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, began recording the movements of the sun, moon, and stars. They discovered that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west daily, the moon waxes and wanes, and seasons cycle through spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Thus, they created the “calendar”—an astronomical map guiding agriculture and life. On this map, the most famous “guide” is the dragon. In the East, the dragon is not a fire-breathing monster but a auspicious symbol: it can be large or small, visible or hidden, representing change and power. The ancients believed the dragon traversed the sky, influencing fortune and misfortune on earth. Hence, they developed Ba Zi (Eight Characters) destiny analysis—based on your birth year, month, day, and hour (four time units, each represented by heavenly stems and earthly branches, collectively called “Four Pillars”)—to calculate your “destiny map.” For example, a person born in the year of Jia Zi, month of Bing Yin, day of Wu Chen, and hour of Geng Shen has a unique birth chart like a star map, marking potential trends in personality, health, and career. But this map is not static: Eastern wisdom often says “Do your best, accept what comes” (尽人事,听天命). You must strive (do your best) while accepting what’s beyond control (accept what comes). Fate is like a river; pattern is the riverbed. You can choose whether to flow calmly or create waves within the riverbed.
The ancients of the West, such as the Babylonians and Greeks, also looked up at the starry sky. But their “guide” was the lion. In Western culture, the lion symbolizes bravery and authority—think of the king of the jungle! The Babylonians divided the sky into regions, grouping stars into teams, creating the earliest constellations. Later, the Greeks named them after mythological figures, like Leo (the Lion) and Scorpio (the Scorpion). They noticed that certain constellations were especially bright in the winter night sky, while others appeared in summer. This led them to wonder: Could the positions of stars influence human fate? Thus, astrology was born. The core of Western destiny analysis is the “horoscope”: at the moment of your birth, looking from Earth, which zodiac signs the sun, moon, and planets occupy—that’s your “destiny map.” For example, a person with the sun in Leo may be described as confident and leadership-oriented; someone with the moon in Cancer may be more sensitive and attached to home. But Western destiny analysis also emphasizes “free will”: the chart shows tendencies, but you can choose how to respond. Like a weather forecast saying “rain tomorrow,” you can bring an umbrella (active response) or get wet (passive acceptance). Pattern is the orbital path of celestial bodies; fate is how you sail on that path.
Interestingly, although the ancients of East and West used different “map tools,” the questions they began to ponder were surprisingly similar:
(Is the world orderly?)
Both Eastern “harmony between heaven and humanity” and Western “cosmic harmony” believed the universe is not chaotic but orderly.
(Can humans predict the future?)
By observing the sun, moon, stars, flowers, and trees, ancients tried to find repeating patterns, like predicting weather from clouds.
(Can fate be changed?)
East says “destiny is shaped by the heart,” West says “the chart hints, the choice is yours.”
What are the similarities and differences in their “maps”? We can metaphorize it this way:
(Similarities):
Both are like a “user manual”: telling you how the world works and how you should live.
Both use symbolic icons: dragons, lions, heavenly stems, zodiac signs—these symbols simplify the complex world into easy-to-remember images.
Both encourage observation: making you the “detective” of your own fate, not a “passenger.”
