Chapter 1: Welcome to Food Kingdom

The morning sunlight filtered through the curtains, and Xiao Ming rubbed his eyes, catching a whiff of something irresistible. It was the sizzling sound of his mom frying eggs in the kitchen—*sizz sizz*—and the *ding* of the toaster. "Xiao Ming, wake up! Breakfast is ready!" his mom's voice called from the kitchen.
Xiao Ming stretched and jumped out of bed. He loved mornings because every breakfast could be different—sometimes fragrant noodles, sometimes soft rice porridge, sometimes sweet jam toast, and sometimes nutritious sandwiches.
"Mom, why do we have to eat every day?" Xiao Ming asked, biting into his fried egg curiously.
His mom smiled and said, "That's a great question! You know what? Every bite of food you take is full of little secrets!"
"Secrets? What secrets?" Xiao Ming's eyes widened.
"For example, why can some people eat whatever they want without gaining weight, while others seem to gain weight just by drinking water? Why do some people love eating meat, while others are naturally vegetarian? Why do some people get a gurgly tummy after drinking milk, while others are perfectly fine?" Mom fired off several questions one after another.
Xiao Ming was dumbfounded—he had never thought about these questions before. "Are these questions... related to food?"
"Of course, they are!" Mom winked mysteriously. "And scientists are gradually uncovering these secrets. Do you want to explore the kingdom of food with me and discover these amazing scientific mysteries?"
"Yes! I'd love to!" Xiao Ming jumped up excitedly.
And so, Xiao Ming embarked on a wonderful journey of exploring the kingdom of food. In the chapters ahead, we will join Xiao Ming to discover the amazing scientific secrets hidden in our food.

Food: More Than Just Filling Your Stomach
Kids, have you ever thought about this question: Why do we need to eat?
You might say, "We eat to not feel hungry, of course!" And that's absolutely right—it's the most basic reason. But what if we only needed to fill our stomachs? Could we just eat a stone? Of course not! Even though a stone might make your stomach feel "full," it wouldn't give you any energy or nutrients.
What Is Food? — The "Building Materials" and "Energy Source" of Our Bodies
Let's make an interesting analogy. If we compare our body to a super mega city, then food is like a fleet of trucks delivering supplies to that city.
(Building Materials)
First, food is our "building materials"
Did you know? Every cell in our body is constantly being renewed and replaced. Just like old buildings in a city need to be demolished and rebuilt, our body's cells also have their own "lifespans." Red blood cells live about 120 days, intestinal cells only 3-5 days, while bone cells can live for decades.
Where do the "bricks" for building new cells come from? The answer is food! When we eat a delicious chicken leg or a piece of tofu, our body breaks down this food into its most basic components—amino acids, fatty acids, glucose, minerals, and vitamins. Then, our body's "construction factory" (ribosomes) reassembles these materials into new cells.
(Energy Source)
Second, food is our "energy source"
Imagine if all the factories, cars, air conditioners, and streetlights in a city needed energy to function—where would that energy come from? In our bodies, there are also many "machines" that need energy—muscles that make our hearts beat, nerve cells that let our brains think, and respiratory muscles that let our lungs breathe.
Food is like the fuel that powers these "body machines." Different types of food contain different amounts of energy:
| Food Type | Energy (per gram) | Examples | |---------|----------------|---------| | Carbohydrates | 4 kcal | Rice, bread, fruits | | Proteins | 4 kcal | Eggs, fish, beans | | Fats | 9 kcal | Cooking oil, nuts, fatty meat |
See? Even though it's just 1 gram, fats provide more than twice the energy of carbohydrates and proteins! That's why foods that "smell delicious" or "feel greasy" usually have higher energy content.
(Information Carrier)
Third, food is also an "information carrier"
You might never have thought that food can carry "information"! What do we mean by this?
Scientists have discovered that the food we eat doesn't just passively provide energy and materials. They also carry "information" that tells our body's organs how to work.
For example, when you eat a chili pepper, your body receives a signal: "Wow, this is something spicy!" Then your brain reacts, making your mouth feel hot and causing you to sweat. This is capsaicin in chili peppers delivering information.
Or when you take a bite of bitter melon, your body receives a "bitter" signal, and your brain knows this might be something inedible or needs caution.
How Much Do We Need to Eat Each Day?
Kids might wonder: How much food do I actually need to eat each day?
This question seems simple, but it's actually quite complex. How much food each person needs depends on many factors:
Age: Kids are growing and need more energy than adults; elderly people move around less and need less energy.
Body Size: A tall middle schooler needs more food than a short elementary school student.
Activity Level: Active kids who love sports need more energy; kids who sit and read all day need less energy.
Genes: Some people are born with fast metabolisms and can eat a lot without gaining weight; others have slower metabolisms and gain weight easily.
According to the Chinese Nutrition Society, the daily energy needs for children of different ages are approximately:
| Age Group | Boys' Daily Energy Needs | Girls' Daily Energy Needs | |---------|---------
