Chapter 1 Introduction: Philosophical Coordinates of Chinese Painting Aesthetics
> When we stand before a Chinese painting—whether it is the slowly unrolling landscape of Huang Gongwang's *Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains*, or the spring chill pervading Guo Xi's *Early Spring*—what exactly are we "seeing"? A history-of-technique approach will tell us about the evolution of texture strokes (*cunfa* 皴法), the lineage of composition, and the master's pedigree. An art-historical approach will situate the work within its era, religion, politics, and economy. Yet none of this touches a deeper question: what philosophical structure underwrites the inner "metaphysical stratum" that makes a Chinese painting Chinese? This book's claim is that without philosophy, we cannot truly enter the world of Chinese painting aesthetics; conversely, once we grasp the philosophical coordinates shaped jointly by Confucianism, Daoism, and Chan (Zen), the seemingly scattered concepts—*qi*, *yun*, *yi*, *jing*, form-spirit, void-solid, brush and ink—will each fall into place within a unified picture. This chapter lays down those coordinates for the entire book.

Eastern Aesthetics as "Embodied Realization" vs. Western Aesthetics as "Conceptual Analysis"
> Before entering Chinese painting aesthetics, we must first perform a methodological clearing. Since the twentieth century, the discipline of Chinese aesthetics has been largely constructed through Western frameworks—Kant's "disinterested pleasure," Hegel's "the sensuous appearance of the idea," Bell's "significant form," Danto's "artworld." These concepts form a precise analytical apparatus. When we turn this apparatus back upon Chinese painting theory, two reactions typically arise: one is the excitement of discovering "China already had similar ideas"; the other is the regret that "China lacked a system." Yet both reactions share a common presupposition: that the conceptual-analytic method of Western aesthetics is the universal yardstick by which all aesthetics should be measured. This book holds that this presupposition itself must be suspended.
> The "conceptual" method has a long tradition in the West. From Plato's questioning of "Beauty itself" (αὐτὸ τὸ καλόν), to Aristotle's definition of tragedy in the *Poetics*, to Kant's distinction among the agreeable, the beautiful, the good, and the sublime in the *Critique of Judgment*—the core impulse of Western aesthetics is to convert aesthetic experience into communicable, debatable, propositional form through clear definitions and classifications. The strength of this tradition lies in its clarity and cumulativity: once a concept is established, it can be cited, criticized, and revised repeatedly within the scholarly community.
> The "embodied-realizational" character of Chinese aesthetics presents a fundamentally different appearance. Consider Xie He's "Six Principles" (*liufa* 六法): "spirit-resonance and life-movement, brush-method as bone-structure, correspondence to the object, appropriate coloring, compositional transmission, copying of models." This set of categories remains the cornerstone of Chinese painting theory to this day. Yet careful examination reveals that Xie He never defined *qiyun* (气韵, spirit-resonance); he merely placed it at the head of the six principles and connected it with "life-movement" (*shengdong* 生动). This is not an oversight but reflects a fundamentally different epistemological orientation: Chinese aesthetics tends to preserve its core categories in a state of "inexhaustible inexpressibility," allowing them to be repeatedly realized through concrete creative and appreciative activities. The reason *qiyun* resists definition is that it is not a static attribute but a dynamic relationship—it can only manifest in the interaction between painter and object, brush and silk, viewer and work.
> Yan Yu's *Canglang's Remarks on Poetry* puts forward "special talent and special interest," and "the wonder that is penetrating and玲珑 cannot be forced into place, like a sound in the air, a color in the face, the moon in water, an image in a mirror—words have an end, but meaning has no limit." This is a self-conscious articulation of the "embodied-realizational" methodology. Words have an end, but meaning has no limit—the proposition itself is both a description of aesthetic experience and a methodological hint: genuine aesthetic understanding cannot be reduced to any fixed definition; it can only be deepened through continuous "realization" (*wu* 悟). From the perspective of Chan, this resonates with "not relying on words and letters, pointing directly to the mind"; from the Daoist perspective, it echoes the epistemological attitude of "the Dao that can be spoken is not the eternal Dao."
> However, "embodied-realizational" does not mean that Chinese aesthetics lacks logic. It possesses its own logic—a "poetic logic" or "topological logic"—in which the boundaries of concepts are not fixed categories but permeable fields. "Intention precedes the brush," "using form to write spirit," "void and solid give birth to each other"—these are not definitions but "openings of perspective." They invite the reader into a particular way of looking rather than providing mechanically applicable rules. This does not mean that Western conceptual aesthetics and Chinese embodied aesthetics are absolutely opposed. In fact, since the twentieth century, the development of phenomenology, process philosophy, and philosophies of the body has produced a strong current within Western aesthetics that draws toward the "embodied-realizational" (Merleau-Ponty's analysis of the "body-subject," Heidegger's meditation on "Dasein" and "the work of art," are obvious examples). This book's position is: we should neither force Chinese aesthetics into Western frameworks nor reject conceptual clarity; rather, we should seek a "mutual illumination" between the two—using conceptual clarity to illuminate the subtlety of embodied realization, and using the depth of embodied realization to activate the rigidity of concepts.
