When Night Falls: The Magic of Falling Asleep
---
The last trace of sunset slipped gently from the windowsill, like golden honey dripping slowly into a glass. Xiaoyue sat in the rocking chair by the window, holding her favorite plush bunny—Rong Rong—in her arms. His two long ears drooped down, like gentle little pillows. Xiaoyue blinked her eyes as she watched the sky outside. The orange-red slowly changed to grape-purple, then from grape-purple gradually deepened into a rich indigo blue.
"Mama," Xiaoyue whispered softly, "why does the sky keep changing its clothes?"
Mama put down her book and walked over to Xiaoyue, kneeling down beside her. Pointing to the sky outside the window, she said, "That's because our Earth mama is slowly spinning around. When our side faces the sun, the sky is bright with daytime. When Earth turns to face away from the sun, we enter our sweet dreamtime."
Xiaoyue tilted her head and thought for a moment, then her eyes lit up. "So, the sun grandpa isn't really 'getting off work,' is he? He's just going to bring warmth to the children on the other side of Earth!"
Mama smiled and gently flicked Xiaoyue's nose. "Our clever Xiaoyue is absolutely right. That's exactly how it works."

When the Magic of Daytime Gently Fades
Xiaoyue watched the window as the sky grew darker and darker. The streetlights in the yard flickered on one by one, like little messengers sent by the night sky, carrying orange-yellow lanterns to light up the earth. The neighbor's cat—a chubby orange fellow—was jumping down from the fence, stretching a big stretch, then ambling leisurely back to his little home.
"Rong Rong, look," Xiaoyue lifted the plush bunny up to the window, "the sky is getting dark, and we need to get ready for bed too."
Just then, something magical happened in the sky. Xiaoyue saw the first star appear, winking at her, as if someone had gently lit a little night light on the deep blue canopy of heaven. Then came the second star, the third star... Before long, stars filled the entire sky, like someone had accidentally knocked over a box of sparkling jewels.
"Mama! Mama!" Xiaoyue bounced excitedly out of the rocking chair, "the stars are out! Are they saying goodnight to me?"
Mama came over and drew the curtains. The room was now lit only by the warm yellow glow of the little bedside lamp. She lifted Xiaoyue onto the bed and said tenderly, "Yes, the stars come out every night. They guard the night sky together with the moon grandma. When we close our eyes to sleep, they watch over us from above, protecting us through the whole night."
Xiaoyue tucked Rong Rong under the covers, the bunny's long ears poking out above the blanket like two soft feathers. Xiaoyue lay with her big curious eyes wide open, asking, "But Mama, when I close my eyes, what can I see? I can't see anything at all."
Mama sat on the chair by the bed, gently stroking Xiaoyue's hair. "What a wonderful question, Xiaoyue. You know what? When we close our eyes, even though the world outside turns dark, something magical begins happening inside our bodies—it's like a grand adventure!"

What is Sleep? — The Body's Little Secret
Xiaoyue blinked and blinked, as drowsiness crept into her body like a gentle little kitten. Her eyelids started to feel a little heavy, but she still tried her best to keep her eyes open, wanting to hear Mama explain this magical secret clearly.
"Mama, what does sleep mean?" Xiaoyue let out a tiny yawn.
Mama smiled and said, "Sleep is the time when our bodies and brains rest. Just like your toys rest quietly in the toy box when you're not playing with them, our bodies and brains need to rest at night too."
Xiaoyue thought about it, then asked, "But Mama, if we fall asleep, what if we can't wake up?"
Mama laughed at Xiaoyue's worry and explained gently, "No, little one. Sleep is very different from being in a coma. Sleep is when our body actively chooses to rest, like giving ourselves a recharge. We close our eyes, take a nap, and then wake up feeling refreshed and full of energy. But a coma is when something goes wrong with the body—it's passive, and it's not a good thing."
Xiaoyue breathed a sigh of relief. "Oh, I understand now. Sleep is good, coma is bad."
"That's right!" Mama nodded. "And did you know, Xiaoyue? Sleep is really important for us. Just like a phone needs to be charged, our bodies and brains need to 'recharge' through sleep too."
Xiaoyue asked curiously, "What would happen if we didn't sleep?"
Mama thought for a moment and decided to tell Xiaoyue a true story. "A long, long time ago, there was a little boy named Randy Gardner. In 1964, he was only 17 years old, and he and two friends did a special experiment—to see how long a person could stay awake. Do you know what happened?"
Xiaoyue shook her head, her eyes growing even wider.
Mama continued, "He managed to stay awake for 11 days and 11 minutes. Do you know what happened? By the second day, he found it hard to focus his eyes and his vision became blurry. By the third day, his muscles started twitching and his movements became slow. By the fourth and fifth days, he started talking nonsense and sometimes didn't even know what he was doing. Later, his two friends had to keep talking to him to help him stay awake, because if they left him alone, he probably would have fallen asleep right away."
Xiaoyue gasped in shock. "11 days without sleeping! That's so scary!"
Mama nodded. "Yes, Xiaoyue. Sleep is really, really important for us. If we don't sleep, our bodies start having problems. We become more likely to get sick, our memory gets worse, our moods become unstable, and we might even not grow as tall."
Hearing this, Xiaoyue unconsciously touched the top of her head and worriedly said, "Then I must sleep well, or I won't grow tall!"
Mama laughed at Xiaoyue's adorable worry. "Don't worry, as long as you sleep well every day, you'll grow up healthy and strong. Come, let Mama tell you what magical things
