The Land of Sound: Discovering the Magic of Voice
The Land of Sound: Discovering the Magic of Voice
---
The first rays of morning light had just crossed the emerald green mountain ridge, and the entire Sound Valley came alive. Birds sang cheerful morning songs on the branches, and streams trickled down from the hills, sounding like an endless musical performance. The air was filled with the fragrance of grass and wildflowers, and those scents seemed to carry strange and wonderful sounds—if you listened carefully, you could even hear the petals trembling softly in the breeze.
At the entrance of Sound Valley stood a giant old oak tree. This oak had been standing there for three hundred years, its trunk so thick that it would take twenty little children holding hands to encircle it. Its branches and leaves were lush and full, like a giant green umbrella covering most of the sky. Its roots stretched deep into the earth, as if listening to the sounds from deep underground.
Just beneath this old oak tree, two children were curiously looking at the world before them.
One was a girl named Xin, six years old, with two perky pigtails and bright eyes that sparkled like two talking black grapes. She wore a yellow jacket printed with little music note patterns and carried a small adventure backpack filled with her treasures—several colorful stones, a specially shaped leaf, and a new crayon she hated to use.
The other was Max, six and a half years old, a little boy wearing round glasses that made him look especially scholarly. His thick lenses were like two little magnifying glasses. Max loved asking questions, and his little head was full of endless "whys." He wore a blue plaid shirt with a pen and small notebook always in his pocket, ready to record any new discoveries.
"Look, Xin!" Max pointed excitedly at the rolling mountains in the distance, "Those mountains look like a musical staff! The tallest peak looks just like a treble clef!"
Xin looked where Max was pointing, and indeed, those mountains rose and fell in sequence, looking just like a musical staff. "Wow, it really does look like one!" she clapped her hands, "I wonder if the wind blowing through those mountains would play a song!"
Just as the two little ones were excitedly discussing the mountains and music, a deep and gentle voice came from above.
"Welcome, dear little visitors."
The two little ones were startled and quickly looked up.
Perched on the highest branch of the old oak sat a great horned owl. This owl was really big—its wingspan was almost a meter wide when spread. Its feathers were brownish, with beautiful stripes and spots, making it look like it was wearing an intricately woven blanket. Most striking were its large, round eyes—glowing with wisdom, with golden pupils like two little lanterns.
"Grandpa, who are you?" Xin asked with wide eyes, not at all afraid of this big bird.
The owl slowly blinked its eyes, then gently glided down from the branch, landing silently before the two children like a feather.
"I am Professor Owl," the old owl said in a gentle voice, "you may call me Professor Owl. Everyone in Sound Valley calls me that."
"Professor Owl?" Max quickly pulled out his notebook from his pocket, "What does a professor do?"
"I am a teacher and a researcher," Professor Owl smiled, "I specialize in studying the mysteries of sounds. I have lived in Sound Valley for three hundred years, and for three hundred years, I have been learning and teaching about the knowledge of sounds."
"Three hundred years!" both little ones exclaimed at once.
"Yes, three hundred years." Professor Owl nodded, "Do you know? For an owl, three hundred is still quite young! The oldest ancestor in our family has lived for over a thousand years."
"Then you must know many, many things about sounds, right?" Xin's eyes sparkled with anticipation.
Professor Owl laughed, his smile warm and kind. "Yes, children. I know a great deal about sounds. But knowing a lot and being able to explain it clearly are two different things. Today, I want to take you on a wonderful journey, to discover the magic of sounds together."
"Really?" Max jumped up with excitement, "Can we learn from you?"
"Wonderful!" Xin clapped her hands with joy, "We'll study really hard!"
Professor Owl looked at these two curious children before him and felt very pleased in his heart. "Very good, children. But before we begin our studies, let me test you first. Do you know what sound is?"
"Sound is the sound of talking!" Max blurted out.
"Sound is the sound of singing!" Xin added.
Professor Owl nodded and shook his head at the same time. "What you said is correct, but not entirely correct. Sound is not just speaking and singing. Wind, rain, thunder, birdsong, flowing water, flowers blooming... these are all sounds too. Even in places you can't hear, there are vibrations of sound. Let me take you to a special place, to understand what sound is in a special way."

What is Sound? Invisible Ripples
Professor Owl took Xin and Max deep into Sound Valley. Passing through a meadow full of blooming flowers and going around a giant echoing stone, they arrived at a magical place—Echo Lake.
Echo Lake was a perfectly round pond, its water so clear you could see colorful pebbles at the bottom. Around the lake grew weeping willows, their branches gently brushing the water's surface, creating ripple after ripple. In the center of the lake stood a small pavilion with an ancient drum inside.
"Wow, what a beautiful lake!" Xin exclaimed.
"Professor Owl, are we going to have class here?" Max asked curiously.
"Yes, right here." Professor Owl guided them onto a small boat by the shore, "Come, let's row to the center."
The small boat glided slowly across the calm lake, creating tiny ripples. Xin and Max sat in the boat, looking around curiously.
When the boat reached the pavilion at the center of the lake, Professor Owl stopped the boat. "Now, watch carefully." As he spoke, he gently tapped
