The Power of Breath: The Energy System of Speaking
The Power of Breath: The Energy System of Speaking
Imagine yourself as a supercar. Your breath is the fuel system that powers you. Without gasoline or electric energy, even the most luxurious sports car sits idle in the garage. Similarly, without proper breathing, no matter how brilliant your content or how melodious your voice, it cannot travel from your throat to your audience's ears.
Now, place your hands gently on your belly. Sit up straight and take a deep breath. Do you feel it? Your belly expands outward as you inhale, like a balloon being inflated. As you exhale, your belly slowly deflates. This simple movement is the most important speaking skill we will learn—diaphragmatic breathing.
Diaphragmatic breathing is the first and most crucial lesson for any speaker. Why? Because all sound is a byproduct of exhaling. When you speak, you are essentially controlling a stream of air flowing from your lungs, vibrating your vocal cords in specific ways to produce sound. Your vocal cords are like guitar strings, and your breath is the hand that plucks them. Without stable airflow support, your voice will be like a kite with a broken string—drifting aimlessly, or worse, failing you at a critical moment.
Let's first understand the basic structure of your respiratory system. Your respiratory system is like a precisely designed air pump, consisting of several key components: your nasal cavity and mouth are the intake vents, your trachea is the airway, your lungs are the main storage tank, and your diaphragm is the driving force behind everything. When you inhale, your diaphragm contracts and descends, your chest cavity expands, and outside air rushes into your lungs. When you exhale, your diaphragm relaxes and rises, your lungs contract, and air is pushed out. Understanding this process is the first step to mastering diaphragmatic breathing.

Understanding Your Respiratory Organs: A Wonderful Journey Inside Your Body
让我们 take a wonderful journey inside your body to meet the amazing organs that help you breathe. This journey starts from your nose or mouth and extends all the way to the tiny air sacs deep within your lungs.
Our respiratory system consists of two parts: the upper respiratory tract and the lower respiratory tract. The upper respiratory tract includes the nasal cavity, mouth, and pharynx—these are the starting stations where air enters the body. When you breathe through your nose, air passes through nasal hairs and mucous membranes. Nasal hairs act like guards, blocking dust and large particles; the mucous membrane is like a moist carpet, secreting mucus to trap smaller particles and warming and humidifying the air. So, breathing through your nose is not only healthier but also makes your voice cleaner and more stable.
After passing through the nose or mouth, air enters the pharynx, then travels through the larynx into the trachea. The trachea is a tube about 10-12 centimeters long, supported by rings of cartilage, like a renovated tunnel. These cartilage rings ensure the trachea stays open so air can flow through smoothly. Inside the trachea is a special mucous membrane covered with tiny cilia—millions of little brooms constantly sweeping trapped dust and foreign objects toward the pharynx, where they are ultimately expelled through coughing or swallowing.
The trachea branches into left and right bronchi, which enter the left and right lungs respectively. Within the lungs, the bronchi continue branching into increasingly smaller tubes, eventually becoming bronchioles connecting to hundreds of millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli. Alveoli are where gas exchange happens. Their walls are extremely thin—just one layer of cells—and they are surrounded by a dense network of capillaries. When you inhale, oxygen from the air passes through the alveolar walls into the blood. When you exhale, carbon dioxide from the blood passes through the alveolar walls to be expelled. An adult's lungs contain approximately 300-500 million alveoli. If spread out flat, they would cover about 70 square meters—roughly the size of a small apartment!
Throughout this respiratory process, the most critical player is the diaphragm. The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscular membrane located between the thoracic and abdominal cavities, separating them. When you inhale, your diaphragm contracts and flattens, the chest cavity expands, your lungs expand, and air rushes in. When you exhale, your diaphragm relaxes and returns to its original shape, the chest cavity shrinks, your lungs contract, and air is pushed out. During quiet breathing, the diaphragm moves about 1-2 centimeters, and each breath takes in about 500 milliliters of air. During deep breathing or speaking, the diaphragm can move 7-10 centimeters, allowing each breath to intake 2,500 milliliters or even more air.

Chest Breathing vs. Diaphragmatic Breathing: Two Completely Different Ways of Breathing
Now that you've learned about the main organs of the respiratory system, let's dive deeper into two different breathing methods: chest breathing and diaphragmatic breathing. While both can keep you alive, their effects on public speaking are vastly different.
Chest breathing is shallow breathing, primarily using the intercostal muscles to expand and contract the chest cavity. During chest breathing, your chest rises and falls noticeably, your shoulders rise and drop, while your abdomen remains relatively still. Many people, especially women and introverted individuals, are accustomed to chest breathing. This breathing method involves relatively smal
