Welcome to the Little Runner's Adventure
A Special Morning
The first rays of morning sunlight pierced through the thin mist, gently falling on the window of Xiao Ming's home. Outside, the birds had already started singing, and the dewdrops on the leaves sparkled in the sunlight, like countless tiny diamonds. Xiao Ming rubbed his eyes and looked at the alarm clock by his bedside—six o'clock sharp. This was the wake-up time he had set for himself, because today, he was about to begin a brand new journey.
"Today, I'll start my training to become the Little Runner God!" Xiao Ming jumped out of bed excitedly, feeling both nervous and expectant. He remembered watching the marathon live stream with his dad last night, and the image of athletes running hard through city streets was deeply imprinted in his mind. The flag waving at the finish line, the competitors who burst into tears of excitement after crossing the finish, and the cheering voices from the crowd—all of it made his heart race.
Xiao Ming quickly put on his sports clothes and walked to the bathroom to splash cold water on his face. The water droplets dripped from his chin, and he felt much more awake. "Little Runner God"—this was the name he and his dad had given to this adventure. His dad told him that to become a real runner, it's not only about running fast, but more importantly, understanding the science of running, knowing the secrets of your body, and learning to communicate with your body.
Today, let's follow Xiao Ming on this running adventure full of surprises and discoveries! Are you ready? Let's go!

The Run of Pheidippides
Before we start our adventure, let's meet a brave runner from over two thousand years ago—Pheidippides. His story is the starting point of all running stories and the source of the birth of the magnificent sport of marathon.
Let's turn back the clock to 490 BCE. On the distant eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, there was a place called Greece. At that time, Greece was composed of many small city-states, and they often fought with each other over land and resources. In the spring of that year, the massive army of the Persian Empire, traveling on hundreds of warships, crossed the Aegean Sea in grand fashion, preparing to conquer all of Greece.
The Persian army landed on a small plain in Greece called Marathon. The Greeks didn't have a powerful navy or a numerous army, but they had one advantage others didn't—they had brave soldiers and a smart general named Miltiades. Miltiades knew that although the Persians were numerous, they had traveled a long way, their soldiers were already exhausted, and their powerful cavalry couldn't function effectively on the narrow plain.
General Miltiades formulated a bold plan. He positioned the Greek army in the woods on both sides of the Marathon plain, making the Persians think they were about to be surrounded. The Persian army took the bait as expected, and they began nervously adjusting their formations. At this critical moment, with a single command from Miltiades, Greek soldiers charged out of the woods like an unstoppable flood, pouncing on the weak points of the Persian army.
The battle was extraordinarily fierce. Greek soldiers waved their spears and shields, letting out earth-shaking battle cries. Although the Persians had numerical superiority, they were thrown into disarray by this sudden fierce attack. They tried to use bows and arrows, but the Greeks had already charged into their midst. In the flash of blades, the Greeks displayed amazing courage and fighting power.
In the end, the Greeks miraculously won the Battle of Marathon! The Persian army fled in disarray, suffering heavy losses. But this victory didn't come easily—192 Greek warriors were forever left on this land.
From Battlefield to Athens
Now, a more important question faced the Greeks: how to quickly deliver this news of victory to the anxious people waiting in Athens? The people of Athens had been standing on the city walls looking toward the battlefield since morning. They didn't know what was happening on the battlefield, didn't know if their husbands, sons, and fathers were alive or had died in battle. The entire city was shrouded in anxiety and uneasiness.
General Miltiades looked around and chose a young, strong soldier—Pheidippides. Pheidippides was famous throughout Greece for his swiftness. He had long legs and amazing endurance. It was said that he once ran from Athens to Sparta in a day and a night to request reinforcements. The general tightly gripped Pheidippides's hand and said, "Friend, Athens needs to know of our victory. You are our fastest person. Only you can complete this task!"
Pheidippides unhesitantly accepted the task. He saluted the general, then turned and began running toward Athens. His steps were light and rhythmic, like a gust of wind sweeping across the plain. He ran through the battlefield littered with bodies, around fallen trees, across flowing streams, without stopping for even a moment.
As time passed, Pheidippides felt his legs growing heavier and heavier, as if filled with lead. Sweat soaked through his clothes, and every breath felt like swallowing fire. His chest heaved violently, and his lungs burned with pain. But he gritted his teeth, with only one thought in his mind: Athens! The news of victory!
Finally, in the afternoon, Pheidippides ran through the gates of Athens. His body was exhausted to its limit, but he still gathered his last bit of strength and shouted loudly: "Rejoice! Athenians! We are victorious!" After shouting these words, the brave messenger collapsed on the ground and never got up again. His body collapsed from exhaustion, but his willpower had carried him through this final sprint.
Athens erupted! People cheered with joy, embracing each other, shedding tears of happiness. The news of victory spread throughout the city like wings. And Pheidippides, the hero who del
