Chapter 1: Entering the Wonderful World of the I Ching
---
Before we begin this wonderful learning journey, let me ask you a question: If someone told you that a very, very long time ago, there was a great ancestor who, using only a brush and paper—or not even paper at all—drew symbols on the earth that would influence Chinese civilization for thousands of years, would you believe it? You might curiously ask: "How is that possible? What kind of symbols were those?"
This great ancestor was Fu Xi, and those magical symbols are the starting point of the I Ching we are about to learn—the eight trigrams. Did you know that Fu Xi lived around 3000-4000 BCE, about a thousand years before the pyramids were built! In that ancient era with neither writing nor paper, Fu Xi looked up at the sun, moon, and stars in the sky, and looked down at the mountains, rivers, plants, and trees on the earth. He understood the most fundamental and important principles from nature and drew them into eight simple symbols. This is the story of how the eight trigrams came to be.

The Legendary Story of Fu Xi Drawing the Trigrams
1.1 Revelations from Ancient Times
Long, long ago, in an era when our ancestors had just learned to use fire, people lived simple and difficult lives. Every day they had to busy themselves finding food, avoiding wild beasts, and struggling against natural disasters. In those times, people had to endure cold winters and sweltering summers. When thunder roared and lightning flashed, they would cower in fear inside caves.
One day, a young man named Fu Xi (he might not have been called by this name then, but everyone calls him that now) stood on a high mountain, gazing spellbound at the magnificent scenery before him. He watched the sun rise in the east, arc across the sky, and set in the west. He observed the moon sometimes round, sometimes crescent-shaped, sometimes bright, sometimes dark. He noticed the four seasons constantly changing—spring bringing万物复苏 (all living things awakening), summer with flourishing vegetation, autumn with bountiful fruits, and winter covered in white snow.
Fu Xi was a person who loved to think deeply. Watching all this, a big question formed in his mind: "Why does the sun rise every day? Why does the moon change from full to crescent? Why do the four seasons cycle each year? Is there some common principle governing all these things?"
He began to observe nature even more carefully. He noticed that day and night alternated, forming the most fundamental pattern—where there is light there is darkness, where there is day there is night. He noticed that weather was sometimes sunny and sometimes rainy, sometimes warm and sometimes cold. Cold and heat, sunshine and rain formed pairs of phenomena. He also noticed that water flows downward, fire rises upward, wind moves leaves, and stones stay still.
Fu Xi kept these observations in his heart, day after day, year after year. One day, when he came to a great river called the Yellow River, something magical happened.
1.2 The Dragon Horse Carrying the Map
According to legend, one day Fu Xi came to the banks of the Yellow River. As he stood lost in thought watching the surging waves, he suddenly saw a huge creature emerge from the center of the river. This creature had the head and body of a horse, but its body was covered with glittering scales, like a dragon leaping out of the water! When the local people saw it, they cried out in shock: "Dragon horse! A dragon horse has appeared!"
Fu Xi looked closely and saw that on the dragon horse's back was carried a strange pattern. This pattern was made up of many small dots arranged in certain shapes, some with more dots, some with fewer. Fu Xi quickly jumped into the water, swam to the dragon horse, and carefully observed the pattern. He discovered that this pattern perfectly matched what he had learned from years of observing nature!
It turned out that this pattern represented the most fundamental principle of nature—Yin and Yang. What are Yin and Yang? Simply put, Yin and Yang are a pair of good friends. One represents light, warmth, positivity, and rising; the other represents darkness, cold, negativity, and descending. But they are not enemies—they are good partners who depend on each other and help each other. Without Yin there is no Yang, without Yang there is no Yin. Just as day and night must alternate for the world to function normally.
The pattern on the dragon horse's back was the famous Hetu (River Map). It is said that from the River Map, Fu Xi gained enlightenment and finally understood the mysteries of how nature works.
1.3 Creating the Eight Trigrams
After receiving enlightenment from the River Map, Fu Xi did not stop thinking. He continued to observe and reflect. He thought: "Although the principle of Yin and Yang is simple, how can I draw it out so everyone can understand?"
One night, Fu Xi looked up at the stars in the sky. He noticed that in the northern sky, seven stars were arranged in the shape of a ladle—these would later be called the "Big Dipper." He also noticed an especially bright star in the eastern sky, one in the west, and ones in the south. In all four directions—east, south, west, north—there was a bright star or constellation.
An idea struck Fu Xi: "That's it! Nature has four directions—east, south, west, north. It has four temperatures—hot, cold, warm, cool. It has two kinds of weather—sunny, rainy. It has two periods—day, night... everything can be understood through 'pairs.' I can also use simple symbols to represent Yin and Yang."
Thus, Fu Xi created two most fundamental symbols:
☰ Qian (Heaven) — Represents Heaven, depicted as one complete horizontal line. Being unbroken represents "Yang." Yang is positive, rising, full of energy. So the Qian hexagram represents Heaven, the father, strength and power.
☷ Kun (Earth) — Represents Earth, depicted as three horizontal lines with breaks in the middle. The breaks
