1.1 一封没有邮票的信
清晨七点十二分，邮递员叔叔把一封信塞进了小米家的红色信箱。那封信看起来怪极了——信封是深蓝色的，上面印着一只展翅飞翔的银色海鸥，信纸的边缘还镶着一圈会发光的金边。小米从床上跳下来，踮起脚尖，把信从信箱里抽了出来。
7:12 a.m. The mailman slid a letter into Xiaomi's red mailbox. It looked very strange — a deep blue envelope with a silver seagull on it, and the paper's edges glowed with gold. Xiaomi jumped out of bed, tiptoed over, and pulled it out.
"哇，这是什么？"她翻到背面，看见邮票的位置——没有邮票。取而代之的是一行细细的、像被雾气写出来的字：
"寄件人：Leo叔叔 | 伦敦·大脑实验室"
"Wow, what's this?" she flipped it over — no stamp. Instead, there was a line of misty writing:
"From: Uncle Leo | Brain Lab, London"
小米愣住了。Leo叔叔？她只在妈妈手机里的照片上见过这个人——一个戴着圆眼镜、头发有点卷、永远穿白大褂的叔叔。妈妈说他是"研究大脑的科学家"，已经很久很久没有回中国了。
Xiaomi froze. Uncle Leo? She'd only seen him in photos on her mom's phone — a man with round glasses, curly hair, and always wearing a white lab coat. Mom said he was a "brain scientist" and hadn't been back to China in a very long time.
她小心翼翼地撕开信封。里面是一张厚厚的羊皮纸，纸上的字像是用一种会消失的墨水写的，但奇怪的是，只要小米把纸对着窗户的阳光，那些字就清清楚楚地浮现出来。
She carefully opened the envelope. Inside was a thick piece of parchment, and the words on it seemed to be written in disappearing ink. But strangely, the moment Xiaomi held the paper up to the window's sunlight, the words appeared crystal clear.
信是这样写的：

*Dear Xiaomi,* *Hello! I heard you're eight years old and in second grade. I have a very, very important thing to ask your help with — well, to be exact, only a "brand-new brain" can solve it.* *Do you want to know "how humans make decisions"?* *By the time this letter reaches you, you should have just woken up. Tell me: which clothes did you put on this morning? Did you brush your teeth first or wash your face first? Do you want porridge or bread for breakfast?* *— You are already making decisions!* *Over the next few days, I will send you some magical little tools. When they all arrive, we can ride the "Neuron Spaceship" together to explore a place that even adult brains have only been to.* *Yours, Uncle Leo* *London, on some rainy Wednesday*
小米读完信，嘴巴张成了一个"O"。
After reading the letter, Xiaomi's mouth formed a big "O."
"决定？"她问妈妈，"妈妈，什么是'决定'？"
"Decision?" she asked her mom, "Mom, what is a 'decision'?"
妈妈正在厨房里煎鸡蛋，听见这个问题，笑了："决定啊——就是你在好几个选项里头，挑一个出来。"
Mom was frying eggs in the kitchen. She smiled: "A decision — it's when you pick one out of several options."
"那我现在可以决定先吃煎蛋还是先喝牛奶吗？"小米举着信跑进厨房。
"Then can I decide whether to eat the fried egg or drink the milk first?" Xiaomi ran into the kitchen holding the letter.
"当然可以，"妈妈把煎蛋翻了个面，"不过你最好先做另一个决定。"
"Of course," Mom flipped the egg, "but you'd better make another decision first."
"什么决定？"
"What decision?"
"先刷牙。"
"Brush your teeth first."
小米咯咯笑着跑向了洗手间。她忽然觉得，今天的早晨，好像和以前的每一个早晨，都有那么一点点不一样了。
Xiaomi giggled and ran to the bathroom. She suddenly felt that this morning was a little bit different from every other morning before.

1.2 早餐桌上的"小纠结"
Xiaomi 坐在餐桌前，面前摆着妈妈准备的"二选一难题"——一碗热气腾腾的小米南瓜粥，旁边是一盘切成三角形、抹了草莓酱的吐司面包。
Xiaomi sat at the dining table. In front of her was Mom's "pick one challenge" — a bowl of steaming hot millet pumpkin porridge, and next to it, a plate of triangular toast with strawberry jam.
粥是金黄色的，上面还撒着几颗红色的枸杞，散发着甜甜的香味。面包呢，三角形的尖尖上有一滴草莓酱快要滴下来，像一个微型的红色滑梯。
The porridge was golden yellow, sprinkled with red goji berries, giving off a sweet smell. The bread, with a drop of strawberry jam about to slide down from its triangle tip, looked like a tiny red slide.
"妈妈，我先吃哪一个？"小米问。
"Mom, which one should I eat first?" Xiaomi asked.
"这是你的决定，"妈妈坐下来，"不是我的。"
"That's your decision," Mom sat down, "not mine."
小米盯着那两样食物，眼睛眨了眨。
Xiaomi stared at the two foods and blinked.
她的脑子里，好像有两个声音在吵架：
In her head, two voices seemed to be arguing:
声音 A 说：粥！粥是热乎的，今天早上有点凉，喝粥会让肚子暖暖的！
*Voice A said: Porridge! Porridge is warm, it's a bit chilly this morning, and drinking porridge will warm up your tummy!*
声音 B 说：面包！面包上有草莓酱！甜甜的！吃起来"咔嚓咔嚓"响，多好玩啊！
*Voice B said: Bread! There's strawberry jam on the bread! Sweet! And it goes "crunch crunch" — so fun!*
小米闭上眼睛，在心里默默地数了"一、二、三"，然后睁开眼睛，伸手——
Xiaomi closed her eyes, counted silently "one, two, three," then opened her eyes and reached out —
她拿起了面包。
She picked up the bread.
"决定完成！"她对自己说，"我选了面包！"
"Decision made!" she said to herself, "I chose the bread!"
妈妈在旁边笑出了声："小米，你刚才那个动作，就是一个非常完整的'决定过程'哦。"
Mom laughed beside her: "Xiaomi, what you just did — that was a complete 'decision-making process'!"
"决定还有过程？"小米一边咬面包一边问，"我以为'决定'就是'选一个'这么简单！"
"Does a decision have a process?" Xiaomi asked while biting the bread, "I thought a 'decision' was just 'picking one' — that simple!"
"才不简单呢，"妈妈在围裙上擦了擦手，"你刚才其实做了至少四件事。"
"It's not that simple," Mom wiped her hands on her apron, "you actually did at least four things just now."
妈妈从冰箱上撕下一张便签纸，画了一个简单的图：
Mom tore a sticky note from the fridge and drew a simple picture:

"看见两个选项——粥和面包。"妈妈说。
"You saw two options — porridge and bread," Mom said.

"选一个——你选了面包。"妈妈说。
"You chose one — you chose the bread." Mom said.
"做下去——你真的咬了一口。"妈妈说。
"You did it — you really took a bite." Mom said.
小米看着那张便签纸，眼睛亮了："妈妈，这就是'决定'的魔法配方吗？"
Xiaomi looked at the sticky note, and her eyes lit up: "Mom, is this the magic recipe for 'decisions'?"
"差不多吧，"妈妈点头，"科学家们管它叫'决策过程'。"
"Pretty much," Mom nodded, "scientists call it the 'decision-making process'."
"决策？"小米在嘴里重复这个词。
"Decision-making?" Xiaomi repeated the word.
"对，'决定'加上'过程'，就变成'决策'啦。"
"Yes, 'decision' plus 'process' becomes 'decision-making'."
小米把便签纸小心地折起来，放进了口袋。她忽然意识到，原来"决定"这两个字，比她想象的，要重得多。
Xiaomi carefully folded the sticky note and put it in her pocket. She suddenly realized that the word "decision" was much heavier than she had imagined.

1.3 一张图看懂一个上午的决定
吃完了早餐，小米看了一眼墙上的钟——7 点 35 分，离出门上学还有 25 分钟。她做了一个小小的决定：画一张"决定地图"，把今天早上做的所有事情都画下来。
After breakfast, Xiaomi glanced at the clock on the wall — 7:35 a.m., 25 minutes before she had to leave for school. She made a small decision: draw a "decision map" of everything she had done this morning.
她从书桌里翻出一支红色的彩笔和一张大白纸，开始画。
She pulled out a red marker and a big piece of paper from her desk and started drawing.
画着画着，她惊讶地停了下来。
While drawing, she stopped in surprise.
"天哪，"她对自己说，"我只是从起床到出门，就做了这么多决定？"
"Oh my," she said to herself, "I made this many decisions just from getting up to leaving the house?"
她数了数，发现从早上 7 点 12 分读到那封信开始，一直到 7 点 35 分她准备出门，她至少做了 12 个 决定。
She counted and found that from 7:12 a.m. when she read the letter, to 7:35 a.m. when she was about to leave, she had made at least 12 decisions.
小米把她的"决定地图"画成了这样：
