The morning sun filtered through the eaves of an old Beijing courtyard house, casting gentle light onto the blue stone slabs of the hutong. A-Li rubbed his sleepy eyes and sat up in bed, only to discover something new resting beside his pillow—a faintly golden envelope. His curiosity piqued, he carefully opened it to find an elegantly crafted card inside, its embossed golden letters reading:
> "Dear A-Li, > > Congratulations on being selected to participate in the 'Global Geography Adventure Competition.' As a competitor in this grand event, you will embark on a magical journey exploring the seven continents of our world. Your first challenge awaits you in Beijing, where the first clue lies hidden. Are you ready? Your adventure is about to begin!"
A-Li's heart raced with excitement. As a boy who had been fascinated by the world since childhood, he had spent countless hours gazing at maps, dreaming of traveling the globe—yet he had never truly left China. This invitation felt like destiny opening a door to the real world. His father was a geography teacher, his mother a history professor, and their scholarly household had nurtured his exceptional curiosity about the world beyond their borders. He could recite the capitals of every country, knew the highest mountains and deepest ocean trenches by heart, but had never experienced any of it firsthand. Now, this mysterious invitation promised to change everything.
Amidst his excitement, A-Li examined the other contents of the envelope more carefully. On the back of the invitation, he discovered a small note with a sketch of a simple map marking a location—Beijing's Forbidden City. The note read: "The first clue lies hidden within six hundred years of crimson walls." A-Li immediately realized this was no ordinary competition, but a genuine adventure waiting to unfold.
He quickly dressed, grabbed his small backpack—a birthday gift from his father on his tenth birthday, now somewhat worn but filled with his beloved geographical tools: a magnifying glass, compass, small telescope, and his well-worn world atlas. Glancing once more at the seven-colored seal on the envelope, he tucked it safely into the backpack's inner pocket, then rushed out the door, mounted his bicycle, and pedaled toward the Forbidden City.
Through Beijing's streets, A-Li's bicycle carried him past a cityscape where modern skyscrapers stood alongside ancient hutongs. This ancient capital, with its three-thousand-year history, was slowly awakening in the morning light. The streets were already bustling with early-rising Beijing residents—some walking birds, others practicing tai chi, still others queuing at breakfast stalls for fried dough sticks and soy milk. As A-Li cycled past Tiananmen Square, where the Five-Star Red Flag was slowly rising in the morning sun, his gaze was inevitably drawn to the magnificent architectural complex to the north—the Forbidden City, also known as Zijincheng, or Purple Forbidden City.
A-Li parked his bicycle at the square's designated area, took a deep breath, and walked toward the Meridian Gate, the main southern entrance of the Forbidden City. As the world's largest and best-preserved wooden structure ancient complex, the Forbidden City witnessed the reign of twenty-four emperors across the Ming and Qing dynasties, representing the essence of Chinese classical palace architecture. Standing before the Meridian Gate, gazing up at the imposing gate tower, a sense of solemnity and sanctity rose from within his heart. The Meridian Gate served as the main entrance to the Forbidden City. Named for its position on the central north-south axis of the imperial compound, facing south toward the sun, it occupied the position of "wu" (午) on the traditional clock-face representation of "zi, chou, yin, mao, chen, si, wu, wei, shen, you, xu, hai." The gate featured three archways—the central passage was reserved exclusively for emperors, the side gates were used by civil and military officials, while members of the imperial clan could only pass through the smaller side doors.
Passing through the Meridian Gate, A-Li entered the outer court of the Forbidden City. Before him stretched an open square, with the Golden Water River meandering through it, crossed by five stone bridges representing the five Confucian virtues—benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness. Towering beyond stood the Gate of Supreme Harmony, its bronze lions guarding this sacred ground with dignified authority. The Gate of Supreme Harmony was constructed during the Ming Dynasty and, after more than six hundred years of wind and rain, has witnessed countless historical moments. It is said that the last Ming emperor, Chongzhen, fled through this gate when Li Zicheng's rebel forces invaded Beijing, making his way to Jingshan (Prospect Hill), where he ultimately hanged himself from a locust tree.
Beyond the Gate of Supreme Harmony, the magnificent Hall of Supreme Harmony came into view. The Hall of Supreme Harmony, commonly known as the Throne Hall or Jinluan Dian, served as the core structure of the Forbidden City and represents China's largest surviving wooden-structured palace building. Originally constructed in the eighteenth year of the Ming Yongle Emperor's reign, after numerous reconstructions and renovations, the current structure reflects the form rebuilt in 1695 during the thirty-fourth year of Qing Emperor Kangxi's reign. The hall's roof employed the double-eaved hip roof (chongyan wudian), the highest-ranking roof style in classical Chinese architecture, reserved exclusively for imperial use. The hall's ridge was adorned with ten beast figures on each end—the maximum number of such ornaments found on any structure—symbolizing supreme imperial authority. Inside, the golden brick floor, intricately carved dragon throne, and the elaborate "nine beams and eighteen columns" construction all spoke eloquently of royal majesty and opulence.
A-Li lingered before the Hall of Supreme Harmony for a long while, carefully observing every detail of this magnificent structure. He noticed the exquisi
