Chapter 1: The Beginning of the Adventure
It was a sweltering afternoon in July. The sky hung low, draped in a veil of gray, and cicadas droned endlessly outside the window as if protesting the oppressive heat. Xiao Ming sat in his cramped room, aimlessly flipping through a comic book whose pages had become worn and frayed from countless readings.
Just as he was drifting toward sleep, the doorbell rang.
"Strange, who could that be at this hour?" Xiao Ming murmured to himself, hopping down from his chair and shuffling toward the door in his slippers.
Standing at the door was an unfamiliar postal worker, cradling a square-shaped cardboard box. The box looked rather old, its corners worn and faded, the sealing tape yellowed with age. A peculiar label was stuck on top—a drawing of an old-fashioned computer with a small cloud floating above it.
"What's this?" Xiao Ming took the box, examining it curiously.
"An elderly gentleman asked me to deliver this to you," the postal worker said. "He said it's a gift for you. Take good care of it."
Before Xiao Ming could ask more about the old gentleman, the postal worker had already ridden off on his electric scooter, vanishing around the corner at the end of the alley.
Xiao Ming carried the box back to his room and carefully unsealed it. Inside lay a computer—no, to be more precise, an extremely old desktop computer. Its casing was cream-colored, with dents and scratches on its corners, and a ring of faded colorful tape around the screen's edge. This computer looked at least twenty or thirty years old.
"Another broken computer, who would want this thing." Xiao Ming grumbled, reaching out to toss the computer into the trash pile in the corner.
Just then, the computer screen suddenly flickered to life.
A beam of blue light rose slowly from the center of the screen, swirling and coalescing in the air until it formed a humanoid silhouette—no, that wasn't an ordinary human figure, but a sprite made up of countless twinkling points of light. Its body was translucent and luminous, woven from starlight, with two large eyes blinking rapidly, sparkling with intelligence.
"Whoa!" Xiao Ming leapt backward, nearly tripping over his own slippers. "Who—who are you?"
The sprite of light performed a somersault in the air and landed on the edge of the computer screen, hands on its hips, declaring in a theatrical voice: "Ahem! Welcome to the World of Algorithms! I am Byte, an AI sprite residing in your new computer! From this day forward, I shall serve as your mentor, guiding you on this wondrous journey through algorithms and data structures!"
"Algorithms? Data structures?" Xiao Ming scratched his head. "What's that? Is it edible?"
Byte covered its face with both hands, looking truly pained. "Goodness gracious, you don't know what algorithms are? Well, well, given that you're my destined master, I'll explain it from the beginning! First, let me ask you a question—do you know how to get from home to school?"
"That's a no-brainer!" Xiao Ming replied without hesitation. "Turn left out the door, walk along the main road, pass the convenience store and the park, then turn right and walk for five minutes—done."
Byte nodded approvingly, the points of light composing its body bouncing along in what looked like applause: "Well said! What you just described is the embryo of an 'algorithm'!"
Xiao Ming looked completely bewildered: "But that's just walking, how is that an algorithm?"
What is an Algorithm?
Byte floated in front of Xiao Ming, its large eyes sparkling with excitement: "Algorithms aren't as mysterious as you might think. Simply put, an algorithm is a method or set of steps for solving a problem. Every morning when you walk to school, you're actually executing an algorithm—you just haven't realized it."
To help Xiao Ming understand, Byte waved its hand, and a three-dimensional image materialized in the air—a miniature maze, with a tiny cartoon character standing at the entrance and a glittering star at the exit.
"Look here," Byte pointed to the maze, "if we want this little character to get the star, we need to find a path from the entrance to the exit. This is a 'search problem.' And algorithms are methods for solving problems like this."
Byte waved its hand again, and the maze vanished, replaced by a neatly arranged row of books: "Here's another example—suppose you want to arrange these books in order from shortest to tallest, what would you do?"
Xiao Ming thought for a moment: "I could find the shortest book and put it first, then find the second shortest and put it second, and so on..."
"Exactly!" Byte bounced excitedly. "That's a sorting algorithm! We computer scientists call this approach 'selection sort,' because its core idea is repeatedly 'selecting' the current smallest element."
Xiao Ming was beginning to understand: "So an algorithm is... a method for doing things?"
"You could put it that way," Byte nodded, "but strictly speaking, an algorithm must meet several conditions: First, it must have clear inputs and outputs. Second, each step must be precise and unambiguous. Third, it must terminate after a finite number of steps. Fourth, every step must be effectively executable."
Byte
As Byte spoke, it wrote glowing text in the air:
The Four Characteristics of Algorithms:
1. Finiteness: The execution of an algorithm must complete within a finite number of steps. 2. Definiteness: Each step must have a definite meaning, never ambiguous. 3. Feasibility: The operations described in the algorithm must be executable through already-implemented basic operations. 4. Input and Output: An algorithm must have clear inputs and outputs.
"Wow," Xiao Ming's eyes went wide, "that sounds complicated, but I'm actually using algorithms every day!"
Byte smiled with satisfaction: "Exactly! Algorithms aren't some lofty, mysterious technology—they exist in every aspect of our lives. Every morning when you get d
