Chapter 1: An Invisible War Is Happening
---
The morning sunlight filters through the curtains and gently lands on Xiao Ming's face.
"Ding-dong, Ding-dong—"
The alarm clock rang. Xiao Ming rubbed his eyes and let out a big yawn, then crawled out of his warm blanket.
"Good morning, Xiao Ming!" Mom's voice came from the kitchen. "Come and have breakfast!"
Xiao Ming walked into the bathroom, picked up his toothbrush and started brushing his teeth. The toothpaste was strawberry-flavored, and the pink foam made a "gurgle, gurgle" sound in his mouth.
Then Xiao Ming sat at the dining table and gobbled up the eggs, bread and milk that mom prepared.
"What a nice day!" Xiao Ming put on his backpack and hopped out the door.

Inside Xiao Ming's Body, A Battle Is Happening!
While Xiao Ming was brushing his teeth, in his mouth — in a world invisible to our naked eyes — a thrilling battle was unfolding!
The toothbrush was rubbing "scrub, scrub, scrub" against his teeth, and Xiao Ming thought he was just cleaning his teeth. But if we could shrink one million times, then another million times, until we were millions of times smaller than a grain of sand...
Whoa! That would be a completely different world!
In this microscopic world, the toothbrush's bristles would be like giant trees falling down, crushing and driving away countless tiny creatures.
The temperature inside the mouth is warm, about 37 degrees Celsius, like a cozy hot spring pool. There are food scraps everywhere — bread crumbs, egg residue, milk — these are delicious feasts for bacteria and viruses.
Imagine if you were a bacterium, living inside Xiao Ming's mouth — it would feel like living in an all-you-can-eat buffet that never ends!

What Are Pathogens?
In this invisible war, we need to get to know two completely different groups of "characters."
The first group are the "bad guys" our bodies need to fight — scientists call them "pathogens."
A pathogen is a microorganism whose name comes from Greek, meaning "thing that produces disease." As the name suggests, pathogens are tiny creatures that can make us sick.
There are many types of pathogens, just like a gang of bad guys has thieves, robbers, and swindlers. Pathogens come in different varieties:
(Bacteria)
Bacteria are single-celled organisms. They have a complete "body" of their own — a cell wall — and their own "energy factory" — the mitochondria.
Bacteria are typically between 1 and 10 micrometers in size. One micrometer equals 0.001 millimeters, so bacteria are about one-thousandth of a millimeter! If you lined up a thousand bacteria head to toe, they would just barely cover a period.
Bacteria come in different shapes. Some look like little rods, called bacilli; some look like little beads, called cocci; and others are spiral-shaped, called spirilla.
Most bacteria are actually harmless, even helpful! Did you know that trillions of beneficial bacteria live in your intestines? They help you digest food, make vitamins, and even protect you from harmful bacteria.
However, some bacteria are indeed "bad guys." When they get to places they shouldn't be, or when their numbers get out of control, they can make us sick. For example, if Staphylococcus aureus gets into a wound, it can cause an infection.
(Virus)
If bacteria are "little houses" with complete functions, then viruses are more like "robbers" — they have no house of their own, no energy factory, and no way to eat or reproduce on their own.
Viruses are even more amazingly small. Normal viruses are only 20 to 300 nanometers in size. One nanometer equals 0.000001 millimeters, so viruses are 100 to 1000 times smaller than bacteria!
The structure of viruses is very simple. They only have two parts: one is genetic material (DNA or RNA), like the virus's "brain" that tells it what to do; the other is a protein shell called a capsid, like a protective "box" that holds the genetic material inside.
Some viruses also have a lipid envelope on the outside, called an envelope. It's like the virus is wearing a "raincoat." This envelope comes from the host cell, stolen by the virus when it leaves.
The "sneakiness" of viruses is that they must invade other organisms' cells to reproduce. Imagine a virus as a thief with a forged bank blueprint. It can't open the vault by itself, but once inside the bank, it can follow the blueprint to make countless copies of "little thieves!"
When a virus enters a cell, it "hijacks" the cell's replication system and makes the cell produce thousands of new viruses. These new viruses break out of the cell and go on to infect more cells.
HIV(human immunodeficiency virus)
(Fungi)
Fungi are organisms that are neither plants nor animals. Their structure is special, with many thread-like structures called hyphae.
Some fungi are helpful to us — like the yeast used to make bread, the mold that produces penicillin — but some can make us sick, like the fungi that cause athlete's foot and candida.
Fungal infections usually occur on the skin, like athlete's foot and ringworm. But sometimes fungi can enter the body and cause more serious infections, called systemic fungal infections.
(Protozoa)
Protozoa are single-celled animals, larger and more complex than bacteria. They can move on their own, and some can even "swim."
Malaria is caused by a protozoan called Plasmodium. The Plasmodium enters the human body through mosquito bites, then invades red blood cells, causing fever and anemia.
(Prions)
This might be the strangest "pathogen" of all! Prions are not bacteria, not viruses, not fungi — they're not even complete organisms!
A prion is act
