The Beginning of a Coffee Dream
It was late November 2017 in Beijing, and the cold wind had already turned biting. Between the Second and Third Ring Roads, the white buildings of Galaxy SOHO stood out prominently against the gray winter sky. Designed by the renowned architect Zaha Hadid, this complex of office buildings with its flowing curves and futuristic aesthetic had become a new landmark in Beijing's CBD area. However, few people noticed that in some corner of this bustling commercial district, a store that would transform China's coffee market was being quietly prepared.
No ribbon-cutting ceremony, no flower baskets, no social media announcements. On December 25, 2017, Christmas Day, Luckin Coffee's first store quietly opened its doors. The date was chosen with deep significance—in Western culture, Christmas is a day of gathering and celebration, while for Luckin, it marked a new beginning, the starting point of a dream.
At this moment, Qian Zhiya perhaps stood in some corner of the store, watching the first customers walk through the doors. She may not yet have realized that this small shop, located on the second basement floor of Galaxy SOHO and spanning less than fifty square meters, would ignite a storm that could shake the entire Chinese business landscape over the coming years. And she herself would transform from a low-profile professional manager into one of the most attention-grabbing figures in China's new consumer sector.
Qian Zhiya: From Professional Manager to Entrepreneur
To understand the birth of Luckin Coffee, we must first know its founder, Qian Zhiya. Before 2017, this name was virtually unknown to most Chinese consumers, but within the Shenzhou rental car ecosystem, Qian Zhiya was a renowned figure.
Qian Zhiya was born in 1973 and graduated from Wuhan Textile University (later merged into Wuhan University). Her career began in the apparel industry, but what truly established her reputation was her tenure at Shenzhou Rental Car and its parent company, Shenzhou Youche Group. Before joining the Shenzhou system, she had worked across multiple industries, accumulating rich operational and management experience. Around 2007, she officially joined Shenzhou Rental Car, beginning a decade-long collaboration with Lu Zhengyao.
Throughout the development of the Shenzhou system, Qian Zhiya played a pivotal role. She was known for her swift and decisive work style, with exacting attention to detail. According to Shenzhou insiders, Qian Zhiya often went deep into frontline operations to understand actual conditions rather than sitting in her office listening to reports. She believed that only by thoroughly understanding every aspect could one truly optimize processes and reduce costs.
In 2016, Shenzhou Youche Group completed its listing on the New Third Board, becoming a star enterprise in the mobility sector. That same year, Shenzhou Youche launched the "100 Cities, 1000 Stores" plan, announcing it would open more than 1,000 stores in 100 cities across the country. The core operational lead for this plan was precisely Qian Zhiya. She led her team in completing the design, site evaluation, and supply chain construction for large-scale store expansion within just a few months, demonstrating astonishing execution and organizational capabilities.
However, just as the Shenzhou mobility empire appeared to be consolidating its position, Qian Zhiya made a decision that surprised many—she would leave Shenzhou and start her own business. Behind this decision lay her profound insight into the Chinese consumer market and her long-term optimism about the coffee sector.

To understand why Qian Zhiya chose the coffee sector, we must first understand the unique circumstances of China's coffee market around 2017.
For a long time, China had been viewed by the international coffee industry as a "potential gold mine." This country with nearly 1.4 billion people had startlingly low per capita coffee consumption. According to data from the International Coffee Organization (ICO), in 2016, China's per capita coffee consumption was only 0.74 kg, far below Japan's 3.5 kg, the United States' 4.2 kg, and even below the global average of 1.4 kg. In other words, at that time, annual per capita coffee consumption in China was less than a single cup.
This low consumption resulted from multiple factors working together. First, China has a long-standing tea culture tradition, with tea having been cultivated and consumed in China for thousands of years. For most Chinese people, tea is the daily beverage, while coffee is viewed as a "foreign import" or a symbol of "petty bourgeois" lifestyle. Second, the spread of coffee culture in China was limited; many consumers didn't know how to appreciate coffee, let alone understand the differences between lattes, cappuccinos, and mochas. Third, the high price of coffee in China was also a significant barrier—a medium-sized latte at Starbucks often cost over 30 yuan, a considerable expense for ordinary workers.
However, it was precisely this "low penetration rate" that indicated enormous growth potential. Looking at global coffee consumption history, we can observe an interesting pattern: when a country or region's per capita GDP exceeds a certain threshold, coffee consumption often experiences explosive growth. Taking neighboring Japan as an example, during the rapid economic development of the 1970s, coffee consumption in Japan began to grow rapidly; by the 1990s, Japan had become one of the world's major coffee consumer markets. China's sustained economic growth, the expansion of the middle class, and the trend toward consumption upgrades all provided fertile soil for the expansion of the coffee market.
Meanwhile, China's coffee market structure also exhibited unique characteristics. Before Luckin's birth, China's fresh-brewed coffee market was almost entirely dominated by two giants: Starbucks and Costa. Since entering the Chinese market in 1999, Starbucks had mai
