Have you ever squatted in the kitchen watching your mom boil eggs, noticing that the broken eggshell fragments always roll toward the edge of the bowl instead of scattering at the bottom? Have you ever chased rainbows on a rainy evening, wondering how that curved colorful band hangs in the air? Have you ever stared at the water droplets on the leaves of your household pothos after watering it, curious why the droplets always roll into round balls instead of spreading into a flat film? These ordinary daily details are actually the starting point of scientific inquiry. You do not need expensive equipment or a professional laboratory. As long as you have a pair of eyes willing to observe and a heart that loves to ask "why", your dining table, balcony, and storage cabinet at home can all become your exploration laboratory.
The essence of scientific inquiry is evidence-based empiricism, which is different from the subjective assumption of "I think" or "others say": all conclusions must be verified by repeatable experiments, and cannot be obtained by "taking it for granted". For example, many people say "eating walnuts nourishes the brain because walnuts look like the brain", which is actually a typical "similarity association" fallacy: the shape of walnuts is similar to the brain, which does not mean it has the effect of nourishing the brain. If you want to verify this claim, you can follow the seven-step core process of scientific inquiry: first observe the grade differences between students who eat walnuts and those who do not, put forward the question of "eating walnuts can improve memory", establish the hypothesis that "eating 2 walnuts a day can improve memory test scores by 10% after one month", design a controlled experiment to control variables such as diet and study habits, collect test data from two groups of students, analyze whether the data supports the hypothesis, and finally share the conclusion with classmates and teachers. In the whole process, there is no "I think", only "what I did and what I saw".
Observation is not "looking casually", but recording the natural phenomena you see with purpose and detail, without adding any subjective judgment. For example, when observing the rolling of eggshell fragments, you cannot directly say "eggshells like to roll to smooth places", but first record: "12 eggshell fragments peeled from the same boiled egg, placed in a 15cm diameter ceramic bowl, tilted 30 degrees, 10 fragments slide toward the bowl edge, 2 remain at the bottom; placed in a 15cm diameter plastic bowl, tilted at the same angle, 4 slide toward the bowl edge, 8 remain at the bottom".

The phenomena observed will raise many questions, but only verifiable and researchable questions are scientific questions. For example, "why do eggshells roll toward the bowl edge" is a researchable question, while "do eggshells hate the bottom of the bowl" is an anthropomorphic pseudoscientific question. When asking questions, try to be as specific as possible to avoid being too broad. For example, do not ask "why are there rainbows", but ask "what is the relationship between the color order of rainbows and the angle of sunlight passing through water droplets".
A hypothesis is not a random guess, but a verifiable speculation based on your existing knowledge and observed phenomena. For example, observing that eggshells slide more easily in ceramic bowls, you can establish the hypothesis: "the coefficient of friction of the bowl edge is smaller than that of the bowl bottom, so eggshell fragments are more likely to slide toward the direction of smaller friction". The expression of the hypothesis should be as clear as possible, and preferably quantitative. For example, "if the coefficient of friction of the bowl edge is more than 30% smaller than that of the bowl bottom, then when tilted 30 degrees, more than 80% of the eggshell fragments will slide toward the bowl edge", so that the follow-up experiment can verify whether the hypothesis is valid.

The core of experimental design is controlling variables: the factor you actively change is called the independent variable, such as the material of the bowl in the previous experiment; the result you want to observe is called the dependent variable, such as the number and direction of eggshell fragments sliding; all other factors that may affect the results should remain the same, such as the size of the bowl, tilt angle, size and weight of eggshells, room temperature, etc., which are controlled variables. Only by controlling variables can you determine that the change in experimental results is caused by the independent variable, not other factors.
```mermaid graph LR A[观察 Observation] --> B[提出问题 Question] B --> C[建立假设 Hypothesis] C --> D[设计实验 Experiment Design] D --> E[收集数据 Data Collection] E --> F[分析结论 Analysis] F --> G[成果交流 Communication] G --> A ```
1.1.5 收集数据(Data Collection):客观、准确的证据记录
数据不是“我觉得碎片滑得很快”,而是用可量化的方式记录:比如“倾斜30度后,陶瓷碗里的碎片平均滑动速度是15cm/s,塑料碗里的是3cm/s”,或者用手机慢动作拍摄滑动过程,后续反复观看记录。收集数据时要尽量减少误差,相对误差(Relative Error)是衡量测量准确度的常用指标,计算公式为: $$Relative\ Error = \frac{|测量值 - 真实值|}{真实值} \times 100\%$$ 比如你测量一个标准100g的砝码,得到98g,那么相对误差就是$\frac{|98-100|}{100} \times 100\% = 2\%$,误差越小,说明你的测量越准确。Data is not "I think the fragments slide very fast", but recorded in a quantifiable way: for example, "after tilting 30 degrees, the average sliding speed of fragments in the ceramic bowl is 15cm/s, and that in the plastic bowl is 3cm/s", or use the slow-motion function of your mobile phone to shoot the sliding process and watch it repeatedly for recording. When collecting data, try to minimize errors. Relative error is a common indicator to measure measurement accuracy, and the calculation formula is: $$Relative\ Error = \frac{|测量值 - 真实值|}{真实值} \times 100\%$$ For example, if you measure a standard 100g weight and get 98g, then the relative error is $\frac{|98-100|}{100} \times 100\% = 2\%$.
