What Is Leadership? /
Have you ever wondered why the classmate who says "Let's all clean up the classroom together" makes everyone want to listen? At the sports meet, why does the voice organizing everyone's cheers make your heart race too? And those amazing people you see on the news—how do they get so many people to follow them?
Today, we're going to start a special journey together. On this journey, you'll discover a secret: leadership isn't some mysterious superpower, nor is it something only "big people" can have.
What Is Leadership?
Starting with an Interesting Question
Let's do a little thought experiment first. Close your eyes and think about the word "leader." What pictures appear in your mind?
Maybe you see a president giving a speech at a podium. Maybe you imagine a general in uniform commanding thousands of troops. Or maybe you picture a very stern-looking businessperson sitting behind a huge desk.
These pictures aren't wrong! Those are indeed leaders. But they're only a tiny part of what leaders look like. Just like a rainbow is more than just the color red, leadership is more than just the "lofty" kind we often see on the news.
What Is Leadership?
Let's give leadership a simple definition. Leadership is the ability to help others and make progress together.
Wait, there are two important keywords here—"help" and "together."
The first keyword is "help." A leader doesn't just make others do things their way. Instead, they actively identify problems and figure out how to help everyone solve them. Like when your deskmate forgets to bring a pencil, and you proactively lend them one—this is a small act of helping, and the person willing to do this is showing the beginnings of leadership.
The second keyword is "together." Real leadership isn't about one person doing everything alone. Instead, it's about getting everyone involved, brainstorming together, working hard together, and finally sharing the joy of success together. Like in a soccer game, a striker who scores is important, but if no one passes the ball, defends, or guards the goal, the team can't win. A real leader understands: winning together is the only true win.
The "Superpower" of Leaders
Some people might wonder: "But I don't have any special talents. Can I become a leader?"
Of course you can! Let's look at what a leader's "superpowers" really are:
The first superpower: willingness to act first. When everyone doesn't know what to do, a leader bravely steps forward and says, "Let me try first!" This takes courage, but it's this courage that makes things start to change. In school, the person who raises their hand to answer a question first, the person who first proposes organizing an activity—they're all showing this superpower.
The second superpower: good at listening. Good leaders don't just talk all the time—they carefully listen to what others say. Because everyone has their own ideas, when you listen carefully, you can discover many great ideas. Once, a primary school student noticed that classmates wanted to play a game but didn't know how. He asked each classmate what they liked and what ideas they had, then combined everyone's thoughts and created a game that everyone loved to play. That's the power of listening!
The third superpower: persistence and not giving up. Many things won't succeed the first time and might need many attempts. Leaders don't never fail—they keep trying after failing. Like building with blocks, if they fall, it's okay, just pick them up and try again. Many great inventions in the world only succeeded after inventors failed hundreds or thousands of times!
Now do you understand? These superpowers, every child can have. They don't require you to go to special places to learn, nor do they need any special tools. They're right inside your heart, waiting for you to discover and practice them.
All Sorts of Leaders
Leaders Right Around You
Leadership isn't a concept that's far away—it's right around you, happening every day. Let's get to know some "little leaders" you might already know but haven't noticed!
The Little Class Monitor
Does your class have a monitor? A monitor's job seems simple—collecting and distributing homework, helping the teacher, maintaining class order. But do you know being a monitor isn't easy!
A good monitor needs to keep the class quiet and orderly when the teacher isn't around. They need to be a fair "mediator" when classmates have small conflicts. They need to organize everyone to participate during class activities. All of these require leadership!
The Team Leader in Extracurricular Activities
Do you participate in extracurricular activities? Whether it's a soccer team, art class, science club, or choir, almost every team has a "team leader." What does this small team leader do?
They might be the first to arrive at the activity venue, preparing in advance. They might be the one who remembers everyone's names and characteristics, making people feel valued. They might also be the one who voluntarily stays to help clean up after the activity. These small actions are all expressions of leadership.
The Little Helper at Home
At home, you can actually become a leader too! When you see trash on the floor and proactively grab a broom to clean, you're a "little leader" in your family. When you help younger siblings with homework or play with them, you're also showing leadership.
A kid named Xiaoming discovered that everyone at home was so busy they often forgot to put clothes that needed washing into the washing machine. So he came up with an idea—he put a cute basket at home, and whenever he saw dirty clothes, he'd proactively put them in, attaching a little note that said "Time to wash clothes!" The whole family smiled when the
