Have you ever looked closely at your palms? Turn your hand over and study those thin lines carefully—they wind across your palm like rivers, flowing from near your thumb all the way down to beneath your little finger. Did you know that these lines were already formed when you were still growing inside your mother's womb? And since then, they have never changed. Every pair of hands is unique, just as no two snowflakes in the world are exactly alike.
Now, please raise both hands and press your palms together. Look at your left palm and your right palm—are their patterns the same? The answer might surprise you: they're not! Even your own two hands don't have identical palm lines. Just as no two leaves in the world are exactly the same, no two palms in the world are exactly alike. This is one of the reasons why people have been fascinated by palm lines and facial features for thousands of years.
Palmistry and Physiognomy: Ancient Wisdom
Before we begin our exploration, let's get to know two important words: Palmistry and Physiognomy. Don't worry—although these words might sound a bit complicated, their meanings are actually very simple.
Palmistry, simply put, is the study of palms and fingers. Palmists believe that from information such as a person's palm lines, finger joint shapes, and nail conditions, one can read about that person's personality traits, health conditions, and even possible future events. The English word "palmistry" comes from the Latin word "palma," meaning "palm of the hand." In Chinese, people often call it "看手相" (kàn shǒu xiàng) or "算手相" (suàn shǒu xiàng).
Physiognomy is the study of facial features. Physiognomists believe that the shape, size, position, and proportions of a person's forehead, eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and other facial features can reflect that person's character, talents, and destiny. In ancient China, physiognomy had a very long history and was known as "相术" (xiàng shù) or "相法" (xiàng fǎ). The English word "physiognomy" comes from Greek, combining "physis" (nature) and "gnomon" (one who knows or judges), meaning understanding inner nature through observing the outer appearance.
You might ask: why were ancient people so interested in observing hands and faces? This is an excellent question! Long, long ago, science and technology were not yet well developed, and people's understanding of the world was very limited. Under such circumstances, observing nature and observing the human body became important ways for people to understand the world.
Ancient people noticed that everyone is unique—some are tall, some are short; some have light skin, some have dark skin; some have complex palm lines, others are simpler. More importantly, these characteristics tend to remain relatively stable throughout a person's life. A person's facial features at birth often persist into adulthood; palm lines formed during the fetal stage also accompany a person throughout their life. This stability made ancient people believe that palms and faces must hide some secret about "who this person is."
Thus, various ancient civilizations all developed their own unique methods of "reading people." Archaeologists have discovered that thousands of years ago, people in different parts of the world were already systematically studying palms and faces.
When it comes to the history of palmistry and physiognomy in China, it truly has a long and distinguished lineage. China is one of the earliest countries in the world to develop systematic physiognomy. As early as the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods (770 BCE–221 BCE), there were already records of physiognomists. At that time, physiognomists were people who specialized in reading people's faces and palms.
Among all Chinese physiognomy texts, the most famous is Maila Shenxiang (《麻衣神相》). This book is revered as "the origin of physiognomy" and is a comprehensive compilation of ancient physiognomy. So, how did this book come about?
According to legend, the author of Maila Shenxiang was a hermit called Mayi Daozhe "Mayi" means wearing hemp clothes, describing very simple clothing. Mayi Daozhe lived from the late Tang Dynasty to the Five Dynasties period (approximately 9th–10th century CE), and was a highly accomplished hermit who rarely ventured out. He wrote down his lifelong insights on physiognomy into a book, which became the renowned Maila Shenxiang that has been passed down through the ages.
Of course, this is just a legend. In reality, Maila Shenxiang was probably formed, supplemented, and refined by many people over many dynasties. Just like the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature—the Journey to the West, Dream of the Red Chamber, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Water Margin—none of them were written by one person at once. Instead, they were based on folk legends and continuous refinement by scholars of various dynasties, eventually being compiled into their final form by certain authors. Maila Shenxiang is the same; it embodies the wisdom and experience of countless physiognomists.
Maila Shenxiang is divided into several parts, systematically introducing how to judge a person's destiny from their facial features and palm lines. The book is very comprehensive, covering 面相 (xiàng miàn, examining the face), 手相 (shǒu xiàng, examining the hands), 骨相 (gǔ xiàng, examining the bones), and 色相 (sè xiàng, examining complexion), among many other aspects.
For example, the book suggests that the human face can be divided into different regions, with each region corresponding to a different aspect:
- The **forehead** represents a person's wisdom and prospects
- **Eyebrows** represent a person's emotions and interpersonal relationships
- **Eyes** are called the "windows to the soul," representing a person's spirit and will
- The **nose** is called the "Wealth Palace," representing a person's financial luck
- The **mouth** is called the "Expression Palace," representing a person's speech and expressive abilities
