Welcome to the World of Materials!
Welcome to the World of Materials!
Sunlight streamed through the window into Grandpa's laboratory, casting dappled shadows on the bizarre-shaped bottles and containers. This was a room full of mysterious atmosphere, filled with instruments and equipment that Lin Lin couldn't understand—some buzzing softly, others flickering with faint blue lights, and still others making strange gurgling sounds, as if they were all living creatures. The bookshelves along the wall were stacked with thick volumes, their golden lettering gleaming in the evening sun. In the corner, an old microscope stood quietly, its brass tube marked with the traces of time.
Lin Lin was ten years old, a little girl with an especially strong sense of curiosity. Her black hair was shiny and tied into a playful ponytail, and her round face always carried a sweet smile. What was most special were her eyes—large and bright, like two black gems. Whenever she discovered something interesting, those eyes would sparkle, revealing her thirst for knowledge and longing for the unknown.
Today after school, Grandpa called Lin Lin to come to the laboratory and keep him company at work. Grandpa was a wonderful scientist who specialized in studying something called "materials." Lin Lin didn't quite understand what materials meant, but Grandpa always said: "Lin Lin, everything around us—from the chair you sit on to the pencil you use, from the clothes you wear to the food you eat—are all materials. Materials are like the building blocks of our world. Different blocks combined together make up the world we live in."
When Lin Lin pushed open the laboratory door, she was immediately captivated by the scene before her. Grandpa was standing in front of a huge machine that emitted a soft blue glow, with various numbers and patterns dancing across the screen. Grandpa wore thick glasses, observing the screen while scribbling rapidly in his notebook.
"Grandpa!" Lin Lin exclaimed excitedly, "What are you doing?"
"Ah, my little explorer has arrived!" Grandpa put down his pen and beckoned to Lin Lin, "Come look quickly, Grandpa is studying a miraculous new material. Do you know? This material is so small that it can't be seen even with an ordinary microscope. We need to use a special device called an 'electron microscope.' It can magnify things millions of times, allowing us to see things that are ten thousand times thinner than a hair!"
Lin Lin widened her eyes, and a picture formed in her mind: if a hair were enlarged to be as thick as a road, the things seen with this electron microscope would still be too tiny to compare!
"Wow! That's amazing!" Lin Lin stood on tiptoe, trying to see more clearly, "Grandpa, what kind of material is that?"
Just as Grandpa was about to answer, his phone in his pocket suddenly rang. He took it out and said with a smile: "Oh, it's a call from an old friend. Lin Lin, why don't you look around the laboratory by yourself first, and see if you discover anything interesting. But remember—"
"Remember not to touch things randomly!" Lin Lin blurted out, finishing his sentence—this was something Grandpa reminded her every time.
Grandpa nodded with a smile and went to the other side of the laboratory to answer the phone.
Lin Lin began walking carefully around the laboratory. She passed by a glowing instrument and took a closer look—it was labeled "Spectrometer." She walked past a large cabinet filled with colorful liquids that sparkled under the lights like jars of candy. Finally, she arrived at Grandpa's usual work desk.
Just as Lin Lin was about to leave, her gaze was caught by something on the desk.
It was a book.
A very, very special book.
This book was stranger than any book Lin Lin had ever seen. Its cover was deep blue, covered with star-like dots of light, as if the real night sky had been printed on it. What was even more magical was that those stars were slowly moving! Some were twinkling, some were spinning, and others flickered like fireflies. Lin Lin rubbed her eyes, making sure she wasn't dreaming.
"What's this book?" Lin Lin couldn't help but whisper to herself, her voice as soft as a mosquito.
She gently picked up the book. The cover felt cool and smooth, as comfortable as silk. On the spine, in silver letters, were several words—
"Adventures in Material Kingdom"
Material Kingdom? An image immediately formed in Lin Lin's mind: in a distant, magical place, there was a kingdom built with all kinds of magical materials. Its residents were all different kinds of materials—some as hard as iron, some as soft as cotton, some as transparent as glass, and some that glowed on their own!
"It must be Grandpa's new book!" Lin Lin thought happily, "He must have wanted to give me a surprise!" With that thought, she carefully turned the pages.
Just as Lin Lin turned the pages—
轰!
BOOM!
A dazzling golden light erupted from the pages, instantly filling the entire room! The light was brighter than the sun, so bright that Lin Lin had to squeeze her eyes shut tightly. But even with her eyes closed, she could feel the light gathering above the book, forming a huge vortex.
"Wha... what's happening?" Lin Lin cried out in alarm.
The vortex grew larger and larger, spinning faster and faster. A warm breeze blew from the center of the vortex, gently lifting Lin Lin's body. She felt her body becoming light and airy, like a feather being drawn into the vortex.
"No—!"
Lin Lin wanted to scream, but her voice was swallowed by the vortex. She felt herself spinning, flying, passing through something—the sensation was like riding a roller coaster, and also like dreaming.
After an unknown time—perhaps one second, perhaps an hour—the spinning finally stopped.
Lin Lin opened her eyes and found herself lying on a soft lawn. Above was a blue sky, with clouds floating like cotton candy. All around was a beautiful garden that seemed unreal—flowers that changed color, turning red, then blue, then pu
