What is Supply Chain? — Like a Magic Chain
One morning, after rubbing his eyes, Xiao Ming ran to the kitchen and said to his mother, "Mom, I want fruit salad!" His mother looked at the empty fruit bowl and smiled, "Okay, but we don't have any fruit at home right now. How do we get fruit salad?" Xiao Ming tilted his head and thought for a moment, "Do we need to go buy fruit first?" His mother nodded, "Yes, but that's just the first step. There is a magical 'journey' between the apple tree in the orchard and our dining table. Today, let's become 'Supply Chain Explorers' and see the magic chain behind the fruit salad!"
A supply chain sounds complicated, like a long, invisible chain. Actually, it is all around us, bringing us food, clothes, toys, and books every day. Simply put, a supply chain is the entire process of turning an "idea" into a "real thing" and then delivering it from the "place of production" to "your hands." It is like a magical conveyor belt connecting countless people and places around the world.
Imagine your favorite strawberry yogurt. How does this cup of yogurt get into your hands? First, someone needs to have the idea to "make a cup of strawberry yogurt" (Idea & Design). Then, someone needs to raise cows and milk them (Raw Milk Production), someone needs to grow and pick strawberries (Fruit Farming), someone needs to process the milk into yogurt (Food Processing), someone needs to design a pretty cup and manufacture it (Packaging Manufacturing), someone needs to transport the yogurt and strawberries to the supermarket (Transportation & Distribution), and finally, you and your parents go to the supermarket to buy it (Sales & Purchase). This whole series of events is the supply chain for a cup of strawberry yogurt.
Every link in this "chain" relies on a key player—the supplier. A supplier is a person or company that provides things. The farmer who raises cows is the supplier of milk, the farmer who grows strawberries is the supplier of strawberries, and the factory that makes yogurt cups is the supplier of packaging. Without them, the chain would be broken from the very beginning!
The entire process of getting a product from raw materials to the consumer. A company or person that provides raw materials, parts, or services. Goods or materials that are stored. The planning and execution of moving goods from point A to point B. > > 交付 (Jiāofù) — Delivery > 将最终产品送到客户手中的最后一步。The final step of getting the finished product into the customer's hands.
A complete supply chain usually has five core "joints" (links). They are interlocked; if one link has a problem, the entire chain can get "stuck." Let's use the story of making fruit salad to get to know these five joints.
This is the starting point of the chain! Procurement is about finding and buying everything you need. For fruit salad, you need to procure: apples, bananas, oranges, salad dressing, a bowl, and spoons. The procurer (maybe mom or dad) goes to the market or supermarket to select fresh, inexpensive, and the right quantity of fruits and materials. They don't just look at the price; they also consider quality, who is selling, and whether delivery can be on time.
> If you go to the supermarket to buy apples, how do you choose? Do you care about price, appearance, or origin (like Shandong apples or Xinjiang apples)? These are all "procurement" decisions!
After buying the materials, the next step is production. For fruit salad, production is you washing the apples, peeling them, cutting them into small pieces, peeling and slicing the bananas, peeling and segmenting the oranges, finally dumping them all into a big bowl, drizzling with salad dressing, and gently mixing with a spoon. In a real factory, production might be robots assembling cars on an assembly line or workers packing snacks in a sterile workshop.
Inventory management happens around this stage. Inventory is "things stored for future use." If the cut fruit pieces are not eaten right away, they need to be put in the refrigerator (storing inventory). The yogurt on the supermarket shelf and the cartons in the warehouse are all inventory. Inventory management answers three questions: How much to store? (Not too little to run out, not too much to spoil) Where to store it? (Refrigerator, shelf, big warehouse) When to restock?
Logistics is the "transportation captain" of the supply chain. It is responsible for moving things from point A to point B. Transporting apples from the orchard to the supermarket (transportation), and delivering the apples and other things you bought from the supermarket to your home (distribution), all fall under logistics. Logistics considers what transportation to use (truck, ship, airplane), which route is fastest and cheapest, and how to package the fruit so it doesn't get crushed during transit. Without efficient logistics, even the best apples won't reach your plate!
This is the final and most critical link of the chain—delivering the final product to the customer's hands. For eating fruit salad at home, delivery is you carrying the salad from the kitchen to the dining table. For online shopping, delivery is the courier ringing your doorbell. This "last mile" experience is very important. If the courier is polite, the package is intact, and it arrives on time, you are happy; if it's the wrong item, late, or damaged, all the previous efforts might be wasted.
Besides these five tangible joints, the supply chain has an invisible but extremely important joint—the information flow. From the moment you decide "I want fruit salad," information starts
