The Cosmic Code of Your Birthday
The Cosmic Code of Your Birthday
The Mysterious Package from Space
On a peaceful night, little explorer Xiao Lin was lying on the grass, gazing up at the starry sky. The countless stars sparkled like diamonds, and the Big Dipper hung lazily at the edge of the sky, as if winking at him.
"Wow—" Xiao Lin couldn't help but exclaim, "The stars live together every day. Do they ever get bored?"
Just then, a shooting star streaked across the night sky, leaving a long silver tail, and flew straight toward Xiao Lin!
Xiao Lin closed his eyes in surprise.
When he opened his eyes, a glowing little box had appeared before him out of thin air. On the box was a note with mysterious big letters: "For the little explorer on Earth—Your Exclusive Cosmic Code."
Curious, Xiao Lin opened the box and found only one small card inside, covered with strange symbols—four pillar-like things, each with two unusual characters written on them.
"What's this?" Xiao Lin scratched his head, "It looks like some kind of code!"
Just then, a gentle voice rang in his ear: "That's the exclusive gift the universe gave you when you were born—your BaZi!"
It turned out this voice came from an ancient star—the Wise Elder Star. It had been twinkling for hundreds of thousands of years, witnessing the birth and growth of countless human civilizations.
"BaZi? What's that? Is it delicious?" Xiao Lin couldn't help but ask, after all, he was still a little foodie.
The Wise Elder Star laughed, its laughter as clear as wind chimes: "BaZi isn't something you eat! It's a personal letter the universe wrote to you, containing secrets about your personality, things you're good at, and the rhythms of your life!"
"That's so cool!" Xiao Lin jumped up excitedly, "But how do I read this cosmic letter?"
"Don't rush, don't rush," the Wise Elder Star said unhurriedly, "Let me tell you the story of BaZi—a wonderful story about time, stars, and you!"
And so, Xiao Lin's BaZi adventure officially began!
The Magical Origin of BaZi
To tell the story of BaZi, we need to turn back the clock to a very, very long time ago—so long ago that you'd need an amazing time machine to get back there.
Long, long ago, about four thousand years ago in ancient China, there was an incredibly smart emperor called the Yellow Emperor. Back then, people didn't have phones, computers, or TVs like we do now. When they were bored at night, they could only look up at the stars.
But you know what? These ancient people stared at the stars and stared, and actually discovered something amazing!
The Wise Elder Star began telling Xiao Lin that magical story:
"Back then, the Chinese discovered that the stars in the sky seemed to move! The sun, the moon, and the five planets—Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Mercury, and Venus—they wandered around in the sky, like a group of dancing stars."
"And here's the most magical part," the Wise Elder Star winked, "the patterns of these stars' movements were actually connected to the seasons, crop growth, and people's daily lives on Earth! For example, when the sun reached a certain position, spring would arrive; when the moon was full, the tides would come in high."
The smart ancient people—we call them "astronomers"—spent a long time observing the stars, recording their positions and movement patterns. They discovered that if they combined the sun and moon's movement patterns with when people were born, they could actually find some interesting patterns!
Imagine if you recorded the weather every day: sunny on day one, cloudy on day two, rainy on day three, sunny again on day four... After recording for several years, you suddenly discover: "Wow! It turns out there's a sunny day every four days, and it rains about every seven days!" This is how ancient people discovered the patterns of the stars.
Slowly, the ancients created an incredibly sophisticated system. They used two tools—"Ten Heavenly Stems" and "Twelve Earthly Branches"—to record time, just like how we use numbers 1, 2, 3, 4... to count today.
"If you imagine the Ten Heavenly Stems and Twelve Earthly Branches as two long lines," the Wise Elder Star explained, "the Ten Stems are: Jia (甲), Yi (乙), Bing (丙), Ding (丁), Wu (戊), Ji (己), Geng (庚), Xin (辛), Ren (壬), Gui (癸); the Twelve Branches are: Zi (子), Chou (丑), Yin (寅), Mao (卯), Chen (辰), Si (巳), Wu (午), Wei (未), Shen (申), You (酉), Xu (戌), Hai (亥)."
"Wow, so many strange characters!" Xiao Lin looked at these symbols, feeling a bit dizzy.
"Don't worry," the Wise Elder Star laughed, "You can think of the Heavenly Stems as 10 cute little spirits, each with its own name and personality; the Earthly Branches are 12 little animals that take turns on duty, recording the passage of time. Just like there are classmates with different personalities at your school, and different classes too."
The wisdom of the ancients was truly remarkable! They organized these observations and records, and thus formed the magical system of "BaZi." Simply put, BaZi is a combination of symbols using Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches to represent the four time points of a person's birth: year, month, day, and hour.
Each time point is represented by one Heavenly Stem plus one Earthly Branch, so that's 2×4=8 characters in total—hence the name "Eight Characters"!
Exploring the Magical Building of Four Pillars
The Wise Elder Star decided to take Xiao Lin to a special place to visit, so they could better explain what the "Four Pillars" are.
"Whoooosh—" and Xiao Lin found himself standing before a huge magical palace. This palace had four super-thick pillars holding up the roof, with different patterns and writings carved on each pillar.
"Welcome to the Palace of Time!" the Wise Elder Star appeared at the palace entrance, taking the form of a kind old grandfather, "Each pillar of this palace represents an important factor related to time. Now, let me introduce them to you one by one."
The First Pillar: Year Pillar
The Wise Elder Star pointed to the leftmost pillar, which had a towering tree painted on it, with a
