Chapter 1: Empire Overview — Entering the Roman World
Imagine if you could fly in a time machine thousands of years into the past and look down at a vast expanse of land. What would you see? On that land, there would be countless cities, villages, roads, and bridges; thousands of people working from sunrise to sunset; magnificent palaces, temples, and public baths; bustling squares, crowded marketplaces, and cheering amphitheaters. This land was the ancient Roman Empire, once dominating the Mediterranean coast and stretching across three continents.
Let's begin our understanding of this great empire with a map. When you unfold a map of the Roman Empire from two thousand years ago, you'll discover that its territory was extraordinarily vast—stretching from the Scottish border in northern Britain all the way to the banks of the Euphrates River in the Middle East; from the confluence of the Rhine and Danube Rivers in the Germanic forests to the oasis at the edge of the Sahara Desert in North Africa. Covering approximately five million square kilometers, the empire encompassed more than forty modern nations, including Italy, France, Spain, Britain, Germany, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, and many regions of the Middle East and North Africa.
This number might be difficult to comprehend. Let me use some familiar examples for comparison. If we compare the Roman Empire to a massive jigsaw puzzle, it was roughly half the land area of modern China, or equivalent to the total area of Western Europe combined. Imagine, in ancient times without airplanes or automobiles, the Romans actually built and ruled such a vast empire using only their feet, horse-drawn carriages, and sailing ships—how remarkable an achievement!
The formation of the Roman Empire was by no means an overnight process; rather, it developed and expanded over hundreds of years. Tracing back to 753 BCE, a legendary figure named Romulus established the city of Rome on seven hills. The story of Romulus and his twin brother Remus is still widely told throughout Europe today. According to legend, the twin brothers were raised by a she-wolf, and this "She-Wolf Suckling" story became the symbol of Rome. After Rome's establishment, the city gradually grew from a small city-state into a republic governing the entire Italian peninsula.
During the late Republic period, Rome produced an outstanding military commander—Julius Caesar. He led Roman legions on various campaigns, conquering Gaul (modern France) and even crossing the sea to invade Britain. In 44 BCE, Caesar was assassinated, plunging Rome into prolonged civil war. Eventually, Caesar's adopted son Octavian defeated all his rivals and established the Roman Empire in 27 BCE, becoming the first Roman emperor, honored with the title "Augustus." From this year, historians marked this as the beginning of the Roman Imperial era.
The empire's rule lasted for several centuries. During this time, Rome experienced countless wars, periods of prosperity, crises, and revivals. In 117 CE, during the reign of Emperor Trajan, the Roman Empire reached its maximum territorial extent—from the Persian Gulf in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west, from the Scottish wilderness in the north to the edge of the Sahara Desert in the south. This was one of the largest empires in human history, controlling approximately one-fifth of the world's population at that time.
However, no empire can remain powerful forever. Beginning in 235 CE, the Roman Empire fell into chaos lasting fifty years, historically referred to as the "Crisis of the Third Century." During this period, the empire simultaneously faced multiple challenges: economic collapse, military rebellions, foreign invasions, and plague epidemics. It is said that thousands died daily from the terrible plague, population sharply declined, and farmland lay abandoned. In 284 CE, a powerful emperor named Diocletian came to power, temporarily stabilizing the situation through a series of reforms, but he also divided the Roman Empire into eastern and western halves, each governed by a separate emperor.
In 330 CE, Emperor Constantine I moved the imperial capital from Rome to the eastern city of Byzantium, renaming it Constantinople (modern Istanbul, Turkey). This decision to relocate the capital was of profound significance—the increasingly prosperous eastern provinces attracted more resources and attention, while the western city of Rome gradually lost its former glory. In 395 CE, after Emperor Theodosius I died, the Roman Empire officially split into two parts: the Western Roman Empire with Rome as its capital, and the Eastern Roman Empire (also known as the Byzantine Empire) with Constantinople as its capital.
The end of the Western Roman Empire came faster than people imagined. From the fourth century onward, Germanic tribes from the north and east—the Goths, Vandals, Burgundians, Franks, and others—began migrating into the empire in large numbers. They were either hired by Romans as mercenary soldiers or forced to migrate due to famine and war, bringing immense pressure to the crumbling empire. In 410 CE, led by their leader Alaric, the Goths captured Rome and pillaged it for three days—this was the first time in eight hundred years that Rome had been conquered by a foreign nation, shocking the entire Mediterranean world.
In 476 CE, on September 4th, a Germanic mercenary leader named Odoacer deposed the last Western Roman Emperor—only twelve-year-old Romulus Augustulus. This event is regarded by many historians as the official marker of the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Although the Eastern Byzantine Empire continued for nearly another thousand years until its fall to the Ottoman Turks in 1453 CE, the history of the Western Roman Empire came to an end.
