When we talk about revolutionary changes in manufacturing, 3D printing technology is undoubtedly an indispensable topic. From the invention of the first stereolithography 3D printer by Chuck Hull in 1983 to the present day where this technology has penetrated from aerospace to everyday life, 3D printing has undergone a long journey from laboratory to thousands of households.
The first step in understanding 3D printing is recognizing its fundamental difference from traditional manufacturing methods. Traditional manufacturing typically uses "subtractive manufacturing" approaches—we start with a complete piece of material and remove excess through cutting, drilling, milling, and other processes to finally obtain the desired shape. For example, when a carpenter makes furniture, they carve a wooden board into tables and chairs through sawing, planing, drilling, and other procedures. This process generates significant material waste, as the sawdust and metal shavings produced often cannot be reused.
In contrast to subtractive manufacturing is "additive manufacturing." Imagine you have a box of building blocks and want to build a castle. Instead of carving the castle's shape from a single piece of material, you stack the blocks one by one until they form a complete structure. 3D printing works on a similar principle—it constructs three-dimensional objects by layering material one layer at a time. Each layer is extremely thin (typically just tens to hundreds of micrometers), and as these layers stack up, they ultimately form any complex shape you design.
This "layer-by-layer" manufacturing approach brings unprecedented design freedom. Traditional machining is limited by tool paths and fixture positioning, making many complex internal structures difficult to achieve. 3D printing, however, can manufacture parts of almost any geometric shape, including complex internal channels, lattice structures, conformal cooling channels, and more. These structures would either be impossible to manufacture with traditional processes or require multiple separate parts to be machined and then assembled. The cabin door bracket of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner required 168 separate parts using traditional methods but was integrated into just 1 part using 3D printing, reducing weight while improving structural strength and reliability.

In 1981, Hideo Kodama from the Nagoya Industrial Research Institute published a paper on a photopolymer-based rapid prototyping manufacturing system, proposing the concept of using ultraviolet light to cure photosensitive resin layer by layer to create three-dimensional objects. Although this work failed to achieve commercialization, it laid an important theoretical foundation for later development. Three years later, in 1984, French engineer Alain Le Méhauté also submitted a patent application for similar technology to the French Patent Office, but due to insufficient recognition of the commercial potential at the time, Le Méhauté abandoned the patent.
In the same year (1984), Chuck Hull independently developed Stereolithography (SLA). Hull was an engineer at Jet Spray Technology and discovered the possibility of using ultraviolet light to cure photosensitive resin during a chance experiment. In 6, Hull officially founded 3D Systems and obtained the patent for stereolithography technology. In 1988, 3D Systems launched the world's first commercial 3D printer—the SLA-1, priced at $250,000. Despite the high price, this machine immediately attracted strong attention from the manufacturing industry because it could quickly convert Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models into physical prototypes, greatly shortening the product development cycle.
The success of stereolithography triggered more technological innovations. In 1989, Scott Crump invented Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). Unlike SLA, which requires photosensitive resin and UV light sources, FDM uses thermoplastic filament as raw material, melting and extruding it through a heated nozzle, building up layer by layer. Crump subsequently founded Stratasys, a company that has become a leader in FDM technology. The emergence of FDM technology greatly reduced the cost and barrier to entry for 3D printing because it doesn't require complex optical systems and is much simpler to use and maintain.
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology was also born during this period. In 1986, Carl Deckard and his advisor Dr. Joe Beaman from the University of Texas at Austin applied for the SLS technology patent. SLS uses a high-power laser to sinter powder materials (usually nylon or other thermoplastic plastics) into solid structures. The advantage of this technology is that it doesn't require additional support structures; unsintered powder can naturally support overhanging parts, greatly simplifying the process of printing complex parts.
The 1990s was a period of rapid maturation and commercialization for 3D printing technology. Multiple specialized 3D printing companies were established, and market competition drove rapid iteration of technology and continuous cost reduction. Objet Geomet
