From Your Room to the Edge of the Universe
Morning sunlight slips through the curtains and lands on your favorite storybook. You stretch in your warm little bed and rub the sleep from your eyes. Outside the window, birds are singing on the branches, and cars are driving by on distant streets. Everything looks so ordinary, so familiar.
But, dear reader, have you ever thought about a magical question—what are we actually living inside?
What if I told you that the city you live in is just a tiny city on a tiny planet in a vast, vast universe? That planet is only one of eight planets orbiting a small star? That star is just an ordinary one among 200 to 400 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy? And the Milky Way is just an ordinary galaxy among at least two trillion galaxies in the universe...
Wouldn't your head start spinning?
Don't worry. Let's take it slow, like climbing a staircase. We'll climb step by step, starting from your room and going all the way to the edge of the universe. At each step, you'll see a broader and more wonderful view. And when you finally look back from the top, you'll discover that you're both small and great—small because the universe is truly, truly enormous, so vast that humans still don't fully understand it; great because, in this boundless universe, intelligent beings can look up at the stars and ponder deep questions about where we come from and where we're going.
Are you ready? Let's begin this wonderful journey!

Our Home: Earth
Let's start from the most familiar place—Earth.
Earth is the planet we live on right now. It's a huge ball, round like a basketball, except Earth is so much bigger, bigger, BIGGER! (Important things must be said three times!)
If you could board a super-fast plane—one so fast it could travel the distance from Beijing to Shanghai in just one second—you would need about 42 hours to fly all the way around Earth. That's almost two full days and nights of flying without stopping!
About 71% of Earth's surface is covered by water, so from space, our planet looks beautifully blue. People call it the "Blue Planet," like a blue gemstone floating in dark space. The remaining 29% is land—places where we can stand, including mountains, plains, forests, and deserts. The tallest mountain is Mount Everest, standing at 8,848 meters. If you dropped a stone from its summit, it would take a full 16 seconds to hit the ground! The deepest ocean is the Mariana Trench, over 11,000 meters deep. If you placed Mount Everest inside it, the mountain's peak would still be underwater—because Everest is only 8,848 meters tall.
Earth is wrapped in a thick atmosphere, like a giant blanket of air. It lets us breathe (without it we'd suffocate), makes the sky look blue (this happens when sunlight plays with gases in the atmosphere), and keeps us warm at night (otherwise nights would be terribly cold). Even more importantly, the atmosphere is like a giant protective umbrella, shielding us from dangerous rays coming from the Sun and space. Without the atmosphere, life on Earth couldn't exist.
Around Earth orbits its natural satellite—the Moon. The Moon is Earth's only moon, like a little companion, always keeping Earth company as we spin through space. We'll talk more about this mysterious friend soon.
Did you know? Earth's shape isn't actually a perfect sphere. Because Earth is constantly spinning, the middle part—near the equator—is slightly bulging out, like a slightly flattened orange. Scientists call this shape an "oblate spheroid." But the difference is so tiny that if you shrunk Earth to the size of a basketball, you couldn't tell it wasn't a perfect sphere.

Earth's Best Friend: The Moon
Earth has a friend who will never leave its side—the Moon.
The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite. What's a satellite? A satellite is a celestial body like the Moon that orbits around a planet. Imagine playing spin-around with your parents: you stand in the middle while Mom or Dad holds your hands and spins you around. You are the satellite, and whoever stays more or less in place is the planet (though in space, planets spin too, so this analogy isn't perfectly accurate).
How big is the Moon? Its diameter is about 3,474 kilometers, roughly one-quarter of Earth's diameter. If you shrank Earth to the size of a basketball, the Moon would be only as big as a tangerine. Don't let its small size fool you—it is our closest neighbor, only about 384,000 kilometers away. That number sounds huge, but if you drove a car at 100 kilometers per hour toward the Moon, you'd get there in about 160 days. By plane, it would take about 20 days. By spacecraft? Much faster!
Have you noticed that the Moon always shows us the same face? This is because the time it takes the Moon to orbit Earth is exactly the same as the time it takes to rotate once on its axis—about 27.3 days. This phenomenon is called "tidal locking," like you and your best friend tied together while spinning—you always face each other with your fronts. So for thousands of years, humans on Earth never saw the Moon's far side—until we invented spacecraft that could fly around to see it. In 1959, the Soviet Union's Luna 3 probe took the first photos of the Moon's far side. In 1969, NASA's Apollo 11 mission landed astronauts
