The question of why we should study Chinese painting aesthetics may appear self-evident, yet it demands careful consideration in the context of contemporary art scholarship. When we survey the landscape of world art history, an undeniable fact emerges: Chinese painting possesses an independent and complete aesthetic system that has developed over thousands of years, forming a cognitive framework, value orientation, and mode of expression fundamentally different from Western artistic traditions. However, for a long period, the unique value of Chinese painting aesthetics has not been fully understood or systematically expounded. In today's age of globalization, how to achieve cross-cultural artistic dialogue and understanding while respecting cultural differences has become an important topic in contemporary aesthetics research.
Chinese painting is not merely a visual art form but also a concrete embodiment of Chinese philosophical thought, aesthetic concepts, and cultural spirit. From Xie He's "Six Principles" (六法论) to Zhang Zao's "Learning from nature while obtaining truth from the heart" (外师造化,中得心源), from Su Shi's assertion that "judging painting by its resemblance reveals the mindset of a child" (论画以形似,见与儿童邻) to Shitao's "theory of the one brushstroke" (一画论), Chinese painting aesthetics has accumulated a wealth of profound and incisive theoretical insights. These theories not only hold significant value for understanding Chinese art but also provide illumination for the development of contemporary aesthetics and art philosophy. Yet for too long, these precious theoretical resources have been either overlooked or simplistically processed, failing to realize their proper scholarly value.
This book is written out of such scholarly concern: to systematically examine the theoretical system of Chinese painting aesthetics, deeply excavate its philosophical foundations, reveal its intrinsic connections with artistic practice, and on this basis, explore its contemporary value and significance. Through this work, we hope to provide readers with a complete vision of Chinese painting aesthetics while also offering a model for cross-cultural artistic research.

As the introduction to this volume, this chapter undertakes multiple tasks. First, we need to define the core concepts of this book, including key terms such as "aesthetics" (美学), "spirit resonance" (气韵), and "artistic conception" (意境), clarifying their connotations and denotations, and establishing the conceptual foundation for the entire discussion. Second, we must analyze the unique cognitive framework that distinguishes Chinese painting aesthetics from Western art history, revealing the philosophical roots of this distinctiveness. Third, we need to trace the methodological evolution of Chinese painting aesthetics studies, from traditional ranking systems to modern academic disciplines, examining this historical process and its contemporary significance. Finally, we must clarify the analytical approach of this book—the integrated research method of "philosophy-technique-artworks" (哲学-技法-作品), and preview the overall structure and chapter arrangement of the volume.

The concept of "aesthetics" (美学), as a modern disciplinary term, originates from the Greek αἰσθητική (aisthetikē), originally meaning "perception" or "sensory cognition." This concept was first systematically employed by the German philosopher Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714-1762) in 1750, defining it as "the science of sensory cognition." Subsequently, Kant conducted an in-depth analysis of the a priori principles of aesthetic judgment in his *Critique of Judgment*, while Hegel established a grand system of aesthetics, defining beauty as "the sensible manifestation of the Idea." In the Western scholarly tradition, "aesthetics" primarily concerns the philosophical questions of art and beauty, involving fundamental issues such as the essence of beauty, the definition of art, and the structure of aesthetic experience.
However, when the concept of "aesthetics" was introduced into China, it underwent a complex process of localization. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when numerous Western scholarly works were translated and introduced to China, "Aesthetics" was rendered as "美学." This translation first appeared in the translation by Nakaba Chōmin of the Japanese scholar Kikuchi Dairoku's *Introduction to Aesthetics*, and gradually gained currency through the efforts of Wang Guowei, Cai Yuanpei, and others. Significantly, although traditional Chinese scholarship lacked the disciplinary name "aesthetics," it possessed rich aesthetic thought and artistic theory. The Confucian cultural tradition of ritual and music centered on "the beauty of harmony" (中和之美), the Daoist pursuit of "naturalness" (自然) and "tranquility" (虚静) as the realm of carefree wandering, and the Buddhist Chan tradition's characteristic wisdom of "wonderful enlightenment" (妙悟) and "complete integration" (圆融) together constituted the three pillars of traditional Chinese aesthetic thought.
The "Chinese painting aesthetics" discussed in this book refers both to research on aesthetic issues concerning Chinese painting in the modern academic sense and to the aesthetic wisdom contained in traditional Chinese painting theory. We shall, under the illumination of the modern academic framework, re-examine and reinterpret the concepts, propositions, and theories in traditional painting discourse, revealing their intrinsic connections and systematic characteristics. Simultaneously, we shall fully consider the possibility of Sino-Western aesthetic dialogue, highlighting the unique contributions of Chinese painting aesthetics from a comparative perspective.

"Spirit resonance" (气韵, qìyùn) is one of the core concepts for understanding Chinese painting aesthetics. This concept connects painting with the origin of cosmic life, conferring metaphysical significance upon artistic creation. To thoroughly understand the connotation of "spirit resonance," one must grasp it from two levels—"气" (qì, vital breath/spirit) and "韵" (yùn, resonance/rhyme)—as well as thei
