*Chapter 1: The Beginning of a Story - An Ordinary Weekend*
It was a sunny Saturday morning. Xiao Ming, a ten-year-old boy, was sitting on the living room sofa, his eyes fixed on the clock on the wall. "Five more minutes, five more minutes, and Xiao Hua will be here!" he counted silently in his heart. Today was a day he had been looking forward to—his good friend Xiao Hua was coming over to play, and they had the whole afternoon to spend together.
"Ding-dong—" the doorbell rang. Xiao Ming jumped up from the sofa like a spring and rushed to the door. "Xiao Hua! You're here!"
Xiao Hua walked in with a big backpack and a bright smile on his face. "Xiao Ming! Guess what I brought today?"
"What is it? What is it?" Xiao Ming rubbed his hands excitedly.
"My mom gave me twenty yuan of allowance! I can buy so many snacks and toys!" Xiao Hua proudly took out a brand new bill from his pocket.
When Xiao Ming heard this, his eyes lit up. "That's awesome! So what can we do with this money? We can buy ice cream, chips, stickers, and..."
"And those latest Ultraman cards!" Xiao Hua added excitedly.
"Yes, yes! And those too!" The two little friends got more and more excited, as if they could already see a table full of snacks and toys.
Just then, Xiao Ming's mom came out from the kitchen. "Xiao Ming, Xiao Hua, you're here! Good timing, Mom also gave you ten yuan of allowance today. You can spend it together with Xiao Hua."
"Ten yuan? I have twenty yuan, plus your ten yuan, we have thirty yuan in total!" Xiao Hua shouted excitedly.
Xiao Ming took the money from his mom, but in his heart, he started to worry. Thirty yuan seemed like a lot, but there were so many things they wanted. How should they spend it?
*What Is Economics? Starting from Sharing a Cake*
Xiao Ming's confusion is actually the same problem each of us faces every day—we always want more than we can have. This is the first important concept economics studies: scarcity.
Let's play a game. Imagine today is your mom's birthday, and there's a big birthday cake at home. Mom brings the cake to the table and asks you: "How should we share this cake?"
You would say: "I want a big piece!"
Dad would say: "I want a big piece too."
Mom says: "I want a big piece too."
But there's only one cake, and there are three people who want to eat it. This creates a problem: What should we do when the cake isn't enough for everyone?
This is scarcity. Scarcity means: there are many things people want, but limited things they can have. Like there's only one cake but many people want to eat it; or like your allowance is only ten yuan, but there might be twenty or thirty things you want to buy.
*What Is Economics? What Does Economics Study?*
Now that we understand scarcity, what exactly is economics?
Simply put, economics is the study of how people make choices. Because things aren't enough to go around, everyone wants more, so we have to make choices: Who gets more? Who gets less? Who gets what they want? Who doesn't?
Economics helps us understand:
What we want (what are our needs and desires)
What we can have (how many resources we can use)
How we should choose (how to allocate limited things so everyone is satisfied)
We can express this with a simple formula:
$$\text{Economics} = \text{Human Wants} + \text{Limited Resources} + \text{How to Make Choices}$$
Or in English:
$$E = W + R + C$$
Where E = Economics, W = Wants, R = Resources, C = Choices.
*The Computer Game Argument: What Is Opportunity Cost?*
Let's return to the story of Xiao Ming and Xiao Hua. The two little friends decided not to rush out to buy snacks, but to play some computer games at home first.
"I want to play Minecraft!" Xiao Ming said, heading to the computer.
"No, no, I want to play Plants vs. Zombies first!" Xiao Hua quickly stopped him.
The two little friends started arguing. "I want to play this first!" "No, I want to play that first!" Neither would give in to the other.
Just then, Xiao Ming's dad walked out of the room. "Kids, what's going on?"
"Dad, we both want to play computer games first, but only one person can play at a time. We don't know what to do," Xiao Ming said委屈ly.
Dad smiled and sat down next to them. "This is an interesting problem. In economics, we call this situation 'resource scarcity.' You both want to play computer games, but there's only one computer and only so much game time. So you have to make a choice."
"But we both don't want to give in!" Xiao Hua pouted.
"Then let me tell you a story," Dad said. "Once upon a time, there was a boy named Xiao Ming who only had one hour of game time each day. One day, he wanted to choose between two games: his favorite Minecraft and the newly released Plants vs. Zombies. He finally chose Minecraft."
"Did he regret it later?" Xiao Ming asked curiously.
"Good question!" Dad nodded. "When Xiao Ming chose to play Minecraft, he gave up the chance to play Plants vs. Zombies. In economics, we call the thing you give up when you make a choice opportunity cost."
*What Is Opportunity Cost?*
Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative you give up when you make a choice.
Let's understand this using Xiao Ming and Xiao Hua's situation:
Situation 1: Xiao Ming plays Minecraft first
Xiao Ming got: Minecraft, the game he wanted to play most
What Xiao Ming gave up: Playing time for Plants vs. Zombies (his second choice)
So the opportunity cost of Xiao Ming playing Minecraft is: The fun of playing Plants vs. Zombies
Situation 2: Xiao Hua plays Plants vs. Zombies first
What Xiao Hua got: Plants vs. Zombies, the game he wanted to play most
What Xiao Hua gave up: Playing time for Minecraft (his second choice)
So the opportunity cost of Xiao Hua playing
