Have you ever wondered, down in the southern part of China, there's a city that shines like a pearl, resting quietly in the embrace of the sea? This city has a magical name—Shenzhen. Whenever we open a map of China and look carefully at the southern coast, we can spot her there. She's not as solemn as Beijing in the north, nor as bustling as Shanghai in the east. Shenzhen is like a vigorous young person, full of energy, dreams, and miracles.
Today, we're beginning a wonderful journey together, getting to know this new friend. We'll follow the guidance of the map to find where Shenzhen is located; we'll listen to her stories and learn the meaning of her name; we'll feel her special qualities and discover what makes her unique. This will be an adventure full of surprises. Are you ready? Let's go!
Imagine looking at the map of China from above. Does the landmass look like a big rooster to you? That's right! Many people say China looks like a magnificent rooster standing proudly in East Asia. Picture a rooster standing with its chest high, its beak pointing south towards the vast Pacific Ocean. That's exactly where Shenzhen is!
If we imagine the map of China as a rooster, Shenzhen is located at the bottom right foot of this rooster—the one reaching towards the sea. Look closely, and you'll find that to the east of Shenzhen is the blue ocean, while to the west is the inland area of mainland China. This location is truly special—it's right at the border between mainland China and Hong Kong, like a bridge connecting the interior with the ocean.
Have you ever been to Beijing? There, winters bring heavy snowfall, Tiananmen Square is vast and grand, and the red walls of the Forbidden City stand magnificent and majestic. Beijing is China's capital, the center of politics and culture, with over three thousand years of rich history. Imagine Beijing as an old man wearing a traditional skullcap, with a long beard—steady, solemn, and full of wisdom.
And Shanghai? The Bund's international architecture gleams with lights at night, and the Oriental Pearl Tower shoots up like a giant silver bamboo shoot into the clouds. Shanghai is China's economic center, the most bustling international metropolis. The bells at the Bund, ships sailing on the Huangpu River, and the crowds on Nanjing Road all tell stories of this city. Shanghai is like a successful businessman in an exquisite suit, carrying a briefcase—stylish, busy, and modern.
So what about Shenzhen? Shenzhen is neither as ancient as Beijing nor as established with hundreds of years of prosperity like Shanghai. Shenzhen is an extremely young city—if we think of Shenzhen as a person, she's only in her forties! Imagine, your parents might be about the same age as Shenzhen! Forty-three years ago, in 1980, Shenzhen was just a small fishing village, where people fished and farmed, living simple lives.
But in just these forty-plus years, Shenzhen has undergone an earth-shaking transformation! Building after building has risen from the ground, wide roads extend in all directions, and cars flow endlessly through the streets. Now, Shenzhen has become a modern metropolis, with even more skyscrapers than Beijing or Shanghai! Shenzhen is like a vigorous teenager, running fast, jumping high, with energy that never seems to run out.
One of Shenzhen's most special features is that she's right next to the sea. From eastern Shenzhen to the beach, it takes only a short drive. There you'll find beautiful Dameisha and Xiaomeisha beaches, with golden sand so soft and fine that walking on it feels like stepping on cotton. Waves gently lap the shore, making "whoosh whoosh" sounds, like the ocean singing a gentle lullaby.
The sea is like a gateway to the world for Shenzhen. Because of the sea, people in Shenzhen can take boats to Hong Kong, Macau, and even farther countries and regions. Shenzhen's Yantian Port is one of the busiest ports in the world. Every day, huge container ships depart from here, carrying goods made in China to every corner of the globe. You can imagine these containers as big boxes filled with treasure—they might hold toys you play with, clothes you wear, or phones and computers that your parents use.
Now, let's talk about the story behind Shenzhen's name. Did you know? Shenzhen's name wasn't chosen randomly—each character has its own special meaning!
The character "深" (Shēn), on the left side, has three dots representing water, and on the right side, a "木" (mù, meaning wood/tree) with a dot. Imagine someone standing deep in a forest, so deep you can't see the bottom, so we use the water dots to remind us there's water here, and it's very deep. This is what "深" means—very deep, bottomless.
The character "圳" (zhèn) might not be familiar to many little friends. On the left, there are also three dots for water, and on the right is "辰" with a dot. In the dictionary, "圳" means "a ditch in the field"—imagine a long water channel at the edge of a field, which farmers use to irrigate their crops. Before Shenzhen became a big city, there were many fields and ditches here, so people named this place "Shenzhen"—deep field ditches.
Long, long ago, there was an especially deep river on the land where Shenzhen now stands. The river water was clear and cool, attracting many people to settle here. People built villages on both sides of the river, making a living by fishing and farming. Because that river was especially deep, people called it the "Shenzhen River," and later the entire area took on the name Shenzhen.
There's another saying that Shenzhen's name comes from the Hakka dialect. Hakka people are a special ethnic group—hardworking, smart, and kind. In Hakka dialect, "deep water" is pronounced like "Shenzhen," so the name gradually spread. No matter which story is true, they're all closely related to water—Shenzhen is truly a city bound to water!
If we compared all the major
