Chapter 1: Between Mountains and Sea — Hong Kong's Geographic Location and Topography
---
Imagine you are sitting in a spaceship, looking down at Earth from the vastness of space. On that blue planet, you can see vast oceans, deep green forests, and brownish-yellow land scattered about. On the east coast of the Asian continent, on the west shore of the Pacific Ocean, there is a uniquely shaped region—where the coastline interlock like teeth, mountains and sea closely embrace, like an exquisitely carved natural painting. This is the place we will explore today: the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, commonly known as Hong Kong.
Although Hong Kong's land area is relatively small—only about 1,114 square kilometers—it houses more than 7.5 million people, making it one of the most densely populated areas in the world. However, for this city to develop into an international metropolis on such limited land, we must first understand its geographic location. Geographic location is the starting point for understanding a city. As the ancients said: "Know the what, then know the why." To understand why Hong Kong is so special, we must first find its position on the globe and understand its relationship with surrounding regions.
From a global perspective, Hong Kong lies between 22°08' and 22°35' north latitude, and between 113°49' and 114°31' east longitude. This position places it in the mid-low latitude region of the Northern Hemisphere, precisely at the junction between the tropical and subtropical zones. If you have some knowledge of Chinese geography, you might know that this dividing line runs roughly parallel to the Tropic of Cancer, and Hong Kong sits just north of this line.
This geographic position grants Hong Kong unique climatic characteristics. Located in the subtropics, Hong Kong enjoys warm, humid weather year-round, with long summers and short winters. The annual average temperature is approximately 23°C. Even in the coldest month of January, the average temperature remains around 15°C, while the hottest month of July sees average temperatures climb to about 29°C. Annual precipitation is approximately 2,400 millimeters, concentrated between April and September. This warm, humid climate brings lush vegetation to Hong Kong and makes outdoor activities possible in all seasons.
What's particularly noteworthy is that although Hong Kong lies in the transition zone between continental and oceanic climates, it is deeply influenced by monsoons. From May to November each year, the southeast monsoon from the Pacific brings warm, moist air to Hong Kong, creating the rainy season; from November to March of the following year, the northeast monsoon from inland Asia brings relatively dry air, forming the dry season. This monsoon climate has not only shaped Hong Kong's natural environment but also profoundly influenced its cultural landscape and residents' way of life. When you see people holding colorful umbrellas in Hong Kong or the ubiquitous cold drink shops during scorching summers, you can sense the unique imprint the monsoon climate has left on this city.
Let us pull the camera closer and shift from a global perspective to a regional one. Hong Kong is situated in southern Guangdong Province, on the eastern bank of the Pearl River Estuary, closely connected to Shenzhen City. To the north, Hong Kong borders Shenzhen; to the west, it faces Macau and Zhuhai across the Pearl River Estuary; to the south, it borders the vast South China Sea. Hong Kong is approximately 120 kilometers from Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, and over 2,000 kilometers from Beijing, China's political center.
From a broader regional context, Hong Kong is positioned at the heart of China's South China region. South China is one of the most dynamic geographic divisions in China, encompassing Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan provinces, as well as Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Regions. This region borders the South China Sea, boasting lengthy coastlines and numerous excellent harbors. Since ancient times, it has served as China's gateway to the outside world. The historical Maritime Silk Road originated from this region, connecting China with Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and even Africa through trade networks.
The Pearl River Delta is the most economically developed region in South China and Hong Kong's most important economic hinterland. This plain, formed by Pearl River alluvial deposits, stretches from Guangzhou in the north to Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Macau in the south, and from Daling in the east to Jiangmen and Zhongshan in the west, opening like a trumpet toward the South China Sea. Hong Kong sits precisely at the crucial position of this trumpet mouth—facing the South China Sea and backing onto mainland China. This unique location has made it a natural bridge connecting China's interior with overseas markets.
The Pearl River is China's third-longest river, stretching approximately 2,200 kilometers with a drainage area of nearly 450,000 square kilometers. Originating from the Wumeng Mountains in Qujing, Yunnan Province, it flows through Guizhou and Guangxi before finally emptying into the South China Sea in Guangdong. This river carries enormous amounts of sediment to the sea each year, forming the vast Pearl River Delta plain at its mouth. The Pearl River's water volume is extremely abundant, with an annual average runoff of approximately 330 billion cubic meters, second only to the Yangtze River in China. It is this great river that has nurtured the fertile lands of the Pearl River Delta and given birth to the port city of Hong Kong.
If we further focus our perspective from the regional level to Hong Kong itself, we discover that the geographic features of this land become even more fascinating. Although Hong Kong is not large in area, its terrain is extraordinarily diverse and complex. Here there are majestic peaks, deep valleys, winding coastlines, open plains, and scattered outlying islands. It is precisely this complex and varied terrain that has shaped Hong Kong's unique urban layout and profoundly influenced the lifestyle of its residents.
